not sure how long i'll be able to look at that GIF and retain my sanity, but perhaps retaining sanity is not such a good thing these days
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:01am Doug Schulkind:

@ausmanx
I have deployed Uncle Michael's Brain-Saving Toggle Device (BSTD) to eliminate to the headache-inducing GIF. Your sanity is now entirely up to you.
Avatar 8:10am ausmanx:

the technological sophistication of the Drummer team is a thing of wonder. i recall you even allowed folks to change gif speed on a playlist recently. i think i'll invite you guys over when i next have computer troubles
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13am Doug Schulkind:

Invite Uncle Michael. I would just molest your equipment further.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17am Uncle Michael:

Doug, you deployed! Huzzah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23am Doug Schulkind:

I used it once before with a particularly gnarly GIF. The bigger problem is am I having computer issues that may knock me off the air today...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24am Uncle Michael:

uh oh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30am Doug Schulkind:

Well, I've got things patched back the way I had it in the Dark Ages and it should work.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:39am doctorjazz:

Hey all, love the GIF (and the ability to stop it).
My family has deserted me tonight, thinking of going to this concert after work...

OCTOBER 28, 2016 - 8PM
MUHAL RICHARD ABRAMS TRIO
Featuring:
Dr. Muhal Richard Abrams - piano
Tom Chiu - violin
Meaghan Burke - cello
* * *
BLUIETT MUSIC
Featuring:
Hamiet Bluiett - baritone saxophone
D.D. Jackson - piano
James Brandon Lewis - tenor saxophone
Reggie Nicholson - drums
Luke Stewart - bass

Of course, I probably should just go home and take care of the stuff I've been putting off, I'll see how much energy I have to deal with going to Manhattan (and if tickets are still available if I do get the get up and go...)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:43am doctorjazz:

(seen Abrams and Bluiett multiple times, but not in a while. Never seen D.D. Jackson, like him on recordings)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43am Gary:

Ah, when I got here the GIF wasn't GiFfing, but I see that when you click on it, it GIFs. That said, I have clicked back on it to stop it from GIFfing, and that's probably where it will stay.
Avatar 8:43am Thelonious Funk:

Hello Drummers! So this is what pink noise looks like!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:45am Brian in UK:

Hello is this the early byrd section?

@doc I am home alone all weekend. Wife and daughters meeting up for christmas shopping capers. Play the gig by ear, so to speak.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:46am doctorjazz:

@Brian in UK-it's Ladies Night Out in my house as well.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:48am doctorjazz:

(the men in my household are myself and my dog, Ozzie). We can just do some male bonding)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:49am doctorjazz:

Is male bonding still OK in the age of Trump? I think he's damaged it considerably.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:49am Brian in UK:

Difficult bonding with five chickens, three cats and a dog. Me, the only one still with their nuts.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:50am doctorjazz:

Ozzie lost his, but he doesn't see to know it (still loves to mount anything).
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:51am Brian in UK:

Even more worrying the comments from Tony Schwartz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51am Doug Schulkind:

Hey doc, Gary, Thelonious, Brian, Ozzie, chickens!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:52am Brian in UK:

Bok, bok, bok, bok & bok.

Has anyone ever been to Fairbanks, Alaska? If so, is it worth a visit?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02am Doug Schulkind:

Now we have something resembling stereo. Had to whack the cables. We're running on a back-up system to get the show of the ground today. Very upsetting, but so far...working.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02am Maggie B.:

good morning! so happy to be in this oasis of sanity with you guys today.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:03am doctorjazz:

Sounding fine on the opening on this end.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03am Doug Schulkind:

Mother Maggie B! The woman who adopted me in my time of need!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04am Doug Schulkind:

Say hi to Mr. Bluiett if you go, doctorjazz! He doesn't know me and will look at you strangely. But I'm OK with that.
  9:04am Mr C:

Count it off right now, 1-2-3-4, Hit me Drummer, Hit Me....
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:04am listener james from westwood:

  9:09am Mr C:

Doug I can give a little more. Hit you off line. Usual way. Talk the talk. Walk the walk.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:09am Brian in UK:

mauri was it you that gave me this cold or did I give it to you. Crap.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Doug Schulkind:

Mr C, we don't hit but we play the hits!

mauri, place your lungs against your radio...

Listener James, delighted you've stopped by. (Deliriously delighted.)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Doug Schulkind:

Thank you thank you, Mr C!

mauri, I understand. You have two lungs but only one laptop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Doug Schulkind:

This Mighty Sons record is on Fine Records. I wrote a piece about this label and its owner in WFMU's blog, here: blog.wfmu.org...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:19am Brian in UK:

Doug, my last effort just went to you. I see no movement on the % scale though.
  9:20am Mr C:

The Soul Brother Six ("Some Kind of Wonderful") were from Rochester as well.
Avatar 9:22am ndbob:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am Dave in Vermont:

Jesus knows where.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:23am listener james from westwood:

Now here is a mix of talent I never would've guessed existed!
Avatar 9:24am ndbob:

for sure James
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Doug Schulkind:

Just in time for Jimmy Durante, ndbob! And HOWDY, Dave in Vermont!

----------

I seriously question whether the pledg-O-meter is actually working at this point. So if you pledge and see no movement, I am CERTAIN the pledge is going into WFMU's happy place. It just might not be graphically represented on the pledge thingy.

I am SO sorry about that! But keep pledging!
  9:26am Mr C:

Let's move the needle!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Doug Schulkind:

I have Part 2 to this Wayne Pyzer oddity, but I am going to spare you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am Doug Schulkind:

Related to doing a "total Sam": Johnnie Taylor is next.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am Goyim in the AM:

Mr. Pyzer, like Jack Chick, now KNOW.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:31am listener james from westwood:

See if something just came through the pledge-o-meter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am Doug Schulkind:

Greetings, Goyim in the AM! Mr. Chick is visiting with Mr. Pyzer right about now!
  9:32am Mr C:

"Friends, inquisitive friends" is such a great song opener..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am Stanley:

If Brian's in again, so am I.
And wooo, I nudged the meter on.
Avatar 🥁 9:34am duke:

Hello Doug and Drummers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am Doug Schulkind:

Up to 19%. MOVEMENT!

Thank you, Listener James!
Thank you, Brian in UK!
Thank you, Mr. C!

Speaking for all of WFMU, I am GRATEFUL!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Jeff Golick:

Calgon, take me away.

And by Calgon, I mean Doug, and the radio, and the wider WFMU/GTDR community.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Doug Schulkind:

Doesn't Calgon defeat Superman in the 171st episode?

Good morning, Jeff Golick!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:38am listener james from westwood:

Hey now, is Brother Kevin Nutt in the house? :D
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:40am Brian in UK:

Stanley, is Mr Thomas in your house?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:41am doctorjazz:

OK, I'm in, we must support The Best Radio Station In The Nation, my computer blocks the meter, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Stanley:

He certainly is, complete with his mellifluous baritone voice.
Saving it for a quiet moment.
Thanks again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Gary:

Turkish 45s sounds like a promising site :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Jeff Golick:

@doctorjazz: where is that Muhal/Hamiet show?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Doug Schulkind:

I know, right Gary!?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Doug Schulkind:

@Thelonious Funk
Thanks for the translation!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Jeff Golick:

@drjazz: yeah, that's the main AACM in NY venue, I guess. I've seen Muhal there a few times. Never seen Bluiett. Muhal is 86!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Stanley:

Love this Turkish pop-arab track.
  9:54am melinda:

Morning all
Avatar 9:54am Thelonious Funk:

Fun fact about Bulent Ersoy, She was a he. Now she's a transgender singer and is famous for her distinct voice and loved by the Turks.
Geceler Yarim Oldu means the nights became my only friend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Stanley:

@Doug Anytime Doug, love the international vibe of GTDS.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Doug Schulkind:

Hi, melinda!!

@Thelonious Funk
Another great Turkish gender-smashing artist: the beloved Zeki Müren!
Avatar 9:58am Thelonious Funk:

@Stanley Yeah, it's pretty surprising!
@ Doug Bingo! Zeki Muren has god like status in Turkey.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:58am doctorjazz:

Seen Bluiett many times in a few contexts, with his own bands and the World Saxophone Quartet mostly, but others as well. He's only 76...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Stanley:

This set is nothing short of amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Doug Schulkind:

Saw Bluiett perform solo once. It was long show; his stamina was, um, breathtaking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Stanley:

Doug, would love you to work on a Nubian/Sudanese/Ethiopian crossover set.
(If such a thing exists)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:03am Brian in UK:

Mackerel butties by the Galata Bridge. Staring out over the Bosphorous. I could take that right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am Jeff Golick:

...and "Galata Bridge" makes me think of John Surman. I am beyond saving.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Doug Schulkind:

We'll love you forever, Cowboy Copas, Hawkshaw Hawkins, Patsy Cline!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Doug Schulkind:

@Stanley
You won't have to twist my arm to do THAT set!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:15am Brian in UK:

Like the flip side. Appropriate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Doug Schulkind:

This is a seriously crappy MP3, but I couldn't not play it. Right? RIGHT?!
Avatar 10:17am Thelonious Funk:

Whats up with the heavy flanger use? lol.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:18am Brian in UK:

Ten gallon turban?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Doug Schulkind:

@Thelonious F
I don't think that's a flange, it's a poor-quality MP3. Just as with this Crusader recording.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Little Danny:

I wish all of my low quality MP3s had sinus-clearing phasing like this!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Uncle Michael:

Was about to ask if the flanging is on this record in the signal path. I've heard a lot of bad MP3 but none of them ever flanged.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:21am Brian in UK:

Sounds like phasing from the late Sixties.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am Parq:

Sounded like a police-siren effect -- which fit the Wallace song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Doug Schulkind:

My guess is the original digitzer of those tracks did them out of phase.
Avatar 🥁 10:24am βrian:

What kind of bottle, exactly, Connie?
Avatar 10:24am Thelonious Funk:

@Doug strange, I have never heard bad quality mp3's flange but it could be the case with these recordings. Anyways it wasn't a turnoff, electro-country!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Uncle Michael:

It's back Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Doug Schulkind:

No, it was HUMAN ERROR. I somehow clicked the Flange button on my MP3 software.

What an idiot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Little Danny:

I am genuinely pleased by this flanging artifactory.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:25am listener james from westwood:

I was wondering why a pro-Wallace song sounded so rad!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Uncle Michael:

heh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Doug Schulkind:

Honestly, I didn't even know it HAD a flange button.

Great, and now you're all missing the flange.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Uncle Michael:

I'm going to do a three hour "special effects" show soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am Little Danny:

DOUG FOR GODSSAKE MORE FLANGE! DO IT AGAIN!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Little Danny:

YES YES YES
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Doug Schulkind:

Just a taste, Little Danny. You KNOW how you get.
Avatar 10:28am Thelonious Funk:

FLANGE FLANGE FLANGE! (CHUG! CHUG! CHUG!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Little Danny:

I don't think my box of reactionary country 45s will ever sound the same again
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:29am Brian in UK:

Avatar 10:29am northguineahills:

I was expecting Snorting Dope and Smoking Coke....
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:30am Brian in UK:

Bobby Zehm is my No.1 especially for the flip.
Avatar 10:32am still b/p:

(like a child speaking with shuddery gasps of crying wind-down)....an' computer takes forever to start up an' get first few things open an' I could see Preacher an' the Bear an' I wanted to hear a track with that name an' it was over by the time my player could staaaaart a several minutes agooo,...but the subsequent string of weirdness is like cookies of consolation. Now play something by the famous country clown, Flange-o McBanjo.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:32am Brian in UK:

Love to hear The Spaniels singing Haemeroids in four part harmonies.
Avatar 10:32am Thelonious Funk:

Best song of the setlist!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:32am Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am Doug Schulkind:

@northguineauhills
That's where you would be wrong, Sir.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am Doug Schulkind:

Now here is where the flange comes in handy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am Stanley:

Preperation H - weren't they a punk band back in the seventies?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Doug Schulkind:

Would the punk band Preperation H's first album have been called, I wonder?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:35am Brian in UK:

Stanley that was the Piles of Croydon. Short lived band only wore cowboy chaps.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Jeff Golick:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am coelacanth:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Doug Schulkind:

Bottoms up, βrian!

Hey, that would be a good album name for Preparation H!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:48am Brian in UK:

This is a Belter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am Doug Schulkind:

Who wants flange?!?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Mike East:

I'd really like to listen this morning, but there's a salsa band rehearsing next to me and there's no way my tiny speakers can compete.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Parq:

Doug, is that domestic flange, craft, or imported?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Little Danny:

I WANT
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Webhamster Henry:

This an oddity of a Space Oddity, alrighty.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:59am listener james from westwood:

I always imagine the guy talking along on this track was sent to space by accident, like he was random ground crew who got locked in during launch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Parq:

Mike East, I really think you ought to find the manager of that Dunkin and complain.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:00am listener james from westwood:

Of course I'm taking all of this from his tone of voice, based on my decaying Spanish-language facility, so what do I know.

According to Discogs, "After a company restructuring the [Belter] label was operated by the renamed company Discos Belter, S.A. till its defunctness in 1984." Hard to believe "defunctness" is even a word, but it is.

Spiro Agnew lived in a gated country club community (that had covenants on all the properties stiplulating you couldn't sell to "Negros") about a mile from where I grew up in Maryland.

Parq: Indeed. Much has changed, and yet fundamental principles remain (or should remain) the same. I spent part of yesterday showing students how the digital tools they use are essentially their print predecessors shoehorned into a web site. Searching, finding, accessing all suffer if the data haven't been organized for the medium.

Then there's the iconic library in literature, Borges' Library of Babel. (I'm ashamed to admit I have yet to read Eco's Name of the Rose.)

Favorite book of historical bibliography: Allan Stevenson, The Problem of the Missale Speciale. Devoured it one sitting in my library school library. Stevenson observes the shifting watermarks in an incunable. From the evidence he begins to deduce the procedure and chronology by which the book was made.
