Elbogen ARE GO.

Sooner or later you stop getting better and just have a style.

You're too humble, Jason. You didn't let the drummerbot take over at all.

Nice music day, these Fridays...
Hi all.
Avatar 3:30pm

I'm confused about the music in the earlier track that was like a rougher cover version of Herb Alpert' s Rise, but years before Rise came out...?

melinda:

hi people!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm
fred:

@Jason: So far so good, but really tired after spending most of the week rushing from one waiting room to another. 15 appointments and tests in the week. That iodine injection for a scanner was not fun. Though I'll look back at it fondly soon enough, and that's the best case scenario
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm

I got love!

Nice cover! Great acoustics.

they did a great job with that.

Hey I think my now-defunct high school used to play Dondero

I believe it is in Royal Oak Michigan

Jason Elbogen:

Hello Mayuko! Don't get fired from your new job--I'm going to be playing some horrifying music later [probably]...
Avatar 4:13pm
Mayuko:

@fred glad you survived the week. 15 appointments per week is terrible.
Avatar 4:21pm
Mayuko:

I'll just steal your horrifyng music idea and play it on my show tomorra. Doing a little bit halloweeny thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm
fred:

@Mayuko: The real surviving stuff is coming soon. I'll have surgery on 11/8. I'll probably be in a haze of morphine when the election results come in. Not sure I'll want to know
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm
Jeff Golick:

That was great. Gotta run, @Jason. Thanks!

I must say it's a very eclectic playlist today--from Dondero High School (which is indeed in Royal Oak) to Beijing.
Avatar 4:27pm
Mayuko:

@fred I hope it goes well and quick. how long will you have to stay in the hospital?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm
fred:

@Mayuko: Around 10 days, then a couple of weeks of intensive reeducation in another hospital. With no internet access, so no WFMU!

It's pretty half-assed of you to just play the Billboard Top 20 songs.

Odd change in this Elegi song--but yeah, it's the same track
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm

I saw Ut 3 years ago, and for once it was a reunion that didn't suck. Not great, but OK.
Avatar 4:40pm
Jason Elbogen:

For a second I was surprised about an 'Ut' reunion, but then I remembered they became sorta 'known' (relatively speaking) in the 80's and had lps in the 90's I believe...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm
coelacanth:

thanks to a sort of okay band from italy that wasn't imaginative enough to think of their own name, it's really hard to find the original ut on the internet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm
fred:

I didn't pledge to your show this year. Funny you talk about thanking listeners: when I did pledge to your show a few years ago, you actually thanked Pierre instead. That was when he was saying "bonjour" on about 75% of the shows, so I actually enjoyed that
Avatar 4:58pm
Jason Elbogen:

Hey Fred! A very late 'Thank You' then! (sorry, I was probably half-asleep at the time, and distracted by the smell of human feces still lingering all over my clothing and my records after taking the 3AM E train)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm
coelacanth:

there have been times that i didn't get thanked and considered it an oversight; then there's been times when the lack of appreciation (-disrespect even, on the part of dave "the spazz", & rex) sealed the deal on never pledging during their shows again.
(Rex's behavior surprised me. Dave's? no.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm
fred:

Hey it was funny (I laughed about it with Pierre when I next saw him). And flattering in a way: maybe that means my English isn't too French. Pierre's is actually much better than he lets on in comments, I think he likes overplaying the French card
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm
coelacanth:

"black hippies". i used to go out with one of those!
...reminds me of the Mahotella Queens' song, the interpretation of which is "the hippies come to soweto")
Avatar 5:08pm
Jason Elbogen:

Coelacanth: I'm really sorry--and a sorta shocked--that anyone here on staff would be rude to listeners.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm
coelacanth:

Thanks Jason. i guess i was surprised in all cases, after all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm
fred:

@coelacanth: I don't care much about being thanked. What annoys me is when a DJ isn't aware that someone pledged to their show. I love to pledge to rookie DJs, and it bugs me when that support gets lost in the worsening pledge system
Avatar 5:14pm
Jason Elbogen:

By the way, Fred, I remember and knew at the time that you were the one who REALLY supported my show. I just must have mixed up the names because of the french, exhaustion, and poop things.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm
melinda:

I confess that when I pledged for the first time several years ago, it was because I was feeling lonely and blue and thought it would be nice to hear the DJ say my name on the air. Since then I have developed a better appreciation of the importance of WFMU in my life and my part in keeping the station afloat, etc.
Avatar 5:14pm
Jason Elbogen:

BTW, Fred, next up is a group I recommend to you...
Avatar 5:16pm
Jason Elbogen:

New Zealand Improvisational Christian Noise Church Group...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm
coelacanth:

fred, i feel mostly the same. i don't really care who else knows it; and in fact hardly anyone will, since the name that gets thanked is different than my comment board moniker.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm
fred:

@Jason: Nice! The singer gets close to sedated Keiji Haino territory at times
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm

@coelacanth: I knew you're not really a coelacanth: your picture betrayed you. Funny that you mention Boulez on your profile, because I work at IRCAM.

- Vikki (fringe factory) knows my name and uses it on the comment board. i didn't get a thank you from her last time i pledged during her show and because the system was so messed up i figured the honky tonk show benefited from it. i found out months later that i won a cd box set from the fringe factory.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm
fred:

Wow, the bandcamp blurb says "Compiled from 14 albums recorded 2012-2014"

fred, always liked Boulez...another casualty of 2015-16.

melinda, wednesday at 8 pm on the ichiban stream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm
coelacanth:

oh, Jeff's got it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm
melinda:

Thanks, guys. Hard to keep up with all the streams.
Avatar 5:37pm
Jeff:

Yep. At least there are only three - main WFMU, Drummer, and Ichiban - which have live-DJ shows. The other two are curated jukeboxes.

But still, an embarrassment of riches.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm
coelacanth:

"crayons to perfume", before ff, is also good.
wednesday can be some tough decision-making, depending on what Gary's up to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm
fred:

@coelacanth: The day after Boulez' death, the current director was giving interviews just outside my office. He had to move to his own office though: a music store nearby was closing its doors and holding a fire sale, so there was an endless stream of excited employees streaming back in very happy about the great deals they had just scored. Boulez seemed to be a very decent guy, despite his harsh and demanding side. I saw him talk with janitors and interns with more warmth than he had for big wigs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm
coelacanth:

i often listen to Vikki (& before that either crayons to perfume or,formerly, the show that used to be on the main fmu, which i'm blanking out on) - then catch the last hour of Gary, then the last 2 hours of efd. 2/3 of the bodega pop episodes i end up going back to for the whole thing though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm
melinda:

Even 3 streams is a lot! I've listened to all 5 at one time or another, but I think I hopped around more with the old site design. Having the 'now playing' visible for all streams at once was kind of nice, since i forget about things if they're not right in front of me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm
melinda:

Wednesday and Thursday evenings present difficult choices.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm
fred:

A couple of times, I played the Ubu stream at the same time as Kenzo's show. I think he would endorse that. I also played two of his shows at the same time, and he did endorse that
Avatar 5:46pm
Jeff:

I agree that the new site design makes GTDR and Ichiban too invisible relative to the main WFMU stream - you really have to go out of your way to see if something's live on an alt-stream. I hope to be able to help lobby for better visibility of the alt-streams, but there's no telling how it'll go.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm
coelacanth:

fred - "...saw him talk ... with more warmth than he had for big wigs" - i appreciate that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm
coelacanth:

yes, the old home page was much more "friendly".
Avatar 5:51pm
Jeff:

I remember attending a concert Boulez conducted where he was quite stern beforehand with the audience about the significance of some upcoming "difficult" pieces... but of course when we got to the part people couldn't hum along with, they were still inattentive and restless and rude.

That had to happen all the time. I entirely understand any crankiness he exhibited.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm
Doug Schulkind:

Greeting, Jasonauts!
Avatar 5:57pm
Jason Elbogen:

Hey Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm
coelacanth:

i knew exactly where you were going with that, Jason, regarding trans... 3 people i'm friendly with, they're female> "male", and i knew them before the decision was made. i will never forget that they have female organs, and they wont either.
i just try to avoid the he, she, him, her, etc. because they're putting me in a position where they want me to lie and i'm not comfortable with that.
...it doesn't mean i don't respect their choices. it'd be cool though if they also respected the situation they put me in.
Avatar 5:59pm
Jason Elbogen:

People here are discussing how it's more difficult to access/be exposed to the alternate streams after the site redesign.
Avatar 6:01pm

I don't dwell on the organ issue, but find it interesting how hardwired the gender-specific words immediately after meeting someone.

hi Jason, i donated Euro and British pound changes to your show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm
fred:

@Jason: Some people say that sex is physical and gender is social. At least in English you have "they" as a neutral pronoun. There's no such thing in French.
Thanks for the show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm

hahaha!
but, yeah. one cannot change one's sex. anything accomplished with hormone consumption is temporary.
