When I was 10 I was displaced from England to a small town in central Wisconsin. I was one of the weird kids who they didn't know what to do with, so put in the "gifted/talented" bracket. A few of us (including the older brother of John from Deerhoof!) got to be part of an experiment involving a student from the local UW campus who was trying out educational methods on us. I can't remember much about her. But in retrospect she seemed to be coming from a really good place. She lent me some books to read, including Jonathon Livingston Seagull. This was 1980. We were all into "Choose Your Own Adventure" books back then (remember them?) and starting to get into D&D. I remember reading JLS and taking it all rather literally, thinking it was actually about a seagull. Or something. But I appreciated her attention and interest in my mental development. i wonder where she is now...

Yeah, i got the feeling she was really trying. There was another book called "The Narrow Gate" or "The Narrow Way" or something, but I've been unable to figure out what that was (another bit of 70s pop-gnostism, I suspect).

What alignment would Stashu be? Chaotic good, presumably. And definitely 18 Charisma. My favourite character was a druid, curiously (decades later I find myself watching sunrises from stone circles on misty mornings, no joke...)

I believe the band Mohini Devi Kalbeliya is from Rajasthan--- that first band that played at Honk totally stole my heart--- I forget what they were called... Folk Arts Rajasthan? They were amazing. So amazing!

Stashu - the opening band at our HONK NYC! show was the Merasi Master Musicians of Rajasthan. They're basically the house band of the Merasi school in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan in north India. The Merasi people have been renowned as performing artists for centuries - but on the other hand they're an untouchable caste so they've faced lots of discrimination. Folk Arts Rajasthan is a non-profit that helps run the school and organized their tour. The band doesn't really have its own web page but you can learn about them and more about the school and the Merasi people at www.folkartrajasthan.org .
