I once hired a guy that did some moving for WFMU to move me. He hired a bunch of recovering addicts from the Lower East Side to do the heavy lifting: 10,000 lps from a fourth floor walk-up.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Doug Schulkind:

I am such a stuff needer that I used to burn onto disc every mp3 I downloaded. Then I would print out a small square of cover art and make a track listing sheet.

I wish I could still do it, but I ran out of space and time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Doug Schulkind:

And hello there, duke!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:51am Brian in UK:

How can this track be unknown?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am melinda:

I am starting to collect more vinyl, but not going nuts with it. I read an article about a study which found that vinyl buyers tend to be middle-aged lonely introverts. Ok, I'll admit it.
Avatar 9:53am still b/p:

I never had a large album collection, but when I finished a stint in Odessa, Texas, 30+ years ago, I sold some to a record store that I'm still regretting. Maybe Kris can zoop up there from Marathon and find 'em.

"In the 1970s, Studs Terkel went around the country with a curious looking piece of equipment. It was a reel-to-reel tape recorder."
If the suggestion is that a reel-to-reel was a "curious" sight to people in the 70s, that's nonsense. If, instead, it's a bit of skewing(!) the writing/framing for an under-30 audience, well, it still pushes a different scoff button.

@ still b/p: It strikes me as odd too. The first tape recorder that I ever saw was one that my Uncle had when he was in college and it was a reel-to-reel, and the year was either 1968 or 1969. By 1972, I saw a cassette recorder at a friend's house and by 1973 I am pretty sure I had one too. Meanwhile, in our elementary school, reel-to-reel recorders were still a common sight.

I was completely reel-to-reel well into the cassette era. Not even for quality reasons, I was just a pack rat. I later got cassettes for taping myself and making airchecks. I bought very few recordings, mostly taping radio shows and myself. So, I played a major part in killing music.

Gear folks are particular. My former workplace sold off a decent old audio reel-to-reel, and later when the dust cover for it was found, that cover was sold separately and alone to someone else on the eBays for a surprisingly good price.
I think I have editing blocks & kits for 2 or three video tape formats in my pile of salvage, and when I just went to look a second ago, the first thing I instantly found on top of a few boxes was....a short reel-to-reel audio tape, unknown content.

A bit after 3 AM, I think. Not sure which date, though.

loving this set, man!

Uncle Michael - I hope I can...its been several weeks since I've been able to tune because of work madness!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am Doug Schulkind:

See ya, coelacanth! Glad you could hang a while.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am Doug Schulkind:

This next set is for Bobby in all of us.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Alex In Illinois:

I do have fond memories of mastering the blade and splice technique to the point of being proud of my splices. But I would be lying if I said that I did not enjoy modifying the waveform with the pencil tool after making a digital splice, or the instant gratification or being able to undo and redo.
Avatar 🥁 11:35am βrian:

Oh yes. ⌘z is the story of my life.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Doug Schulkind:

@Alex in Illinois
I don't pretend that digital editing doesn't have its advantages. I just don't enjoy it. I feel reduced to being a completer of tasks, rather than an intuitive/creative actor.
Avatar 11:39am hyde:

ok, i'm off to buy more packing tape. will be back to let Uncle Michael play me some packing music.

thanks for the tunes!
Avatar 11:39am Carmichael:

Heya Doug and buckaroos/buckarettes.

@Alex, my 1st job in radio was splicing tapes and de-splicing several digits.

The parking meters in Pittsburgh get you 5 minutes for a quarter.
  11:40am Dean:

Bobby needs just another minute.
Avatar 11:42am Carmichael:

With the new Sacramento Kings arena, you have to get a loan to park downtown. That's why the local credit union has naming rights ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Doug Schulkind:

Bye, hyde! Hi, Carmichael! Yow, Dean!
Avatar 11:43am Carmichael:

Bobby's pulling rank on his woman.

He's filing a grievance.
Avatar 11:44am Lewis:

Greetings all - seems I don't have the time I once did to bask in the Friday morning tunes... but I am here now!

So many Bobby's, so little time...

Great show as ever. Crapulous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Doug Schulkind:

You should see Bobby's socks.

Also great to see you here, Lewis!
Avatar 11:46am Lewis:

(Doug - made a brief dash to Pburgh last weekend to deliver my kids kitty cats to their new digs near Regent Square. Parking was free in their neighborhood for the 10 or so hours I was there)
Avatar 🥁 11:46am βrian:

I never understood why people honor naming rights. That is, people who aren't contractually obligated. Once Comiskey Park, it's always Comiskey Park, damn it!
Avatar 11:46am Carmichael:

So do we know who's playing that old Telecaster?

@βrian
I find that despicable! If you name a damned building after someone, it's so that we honor and remember them. To change the name (for a cash grab) is an abomination.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Jeff Golick:

(Love your photo, @Carmichael. It's the second such example I've seen. Let's hope it's a growing trend.)

The Pittsburgh Pirates, like the Drummer, quietly retreat to gather new soul for another day.
