Permanent as in I'm not returning to Brooklyn any time soon. Not sure where in FL I'll end up long-term, outside of Jacksonville right now.
Avatar 9:58am ausmanx:

Having been in Manila for the election, we need to be reminded that Duterte is much more interesting and substantial than the sensationalist Western media headlines would have us believe, and certainly shouldn't be lumped into the same populist basket as the others... www.counterpunch.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am Doug Schulkind:

What basket should we lump Duterte in, ausmanx?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am Doug Schulkind:

I know what it's like to leave Brooklyn, NGH. I know it has changed significantly, but I miss it still—terribly—though.
Avatar 10:09am ausmanx:

same as Putin... very very clever politicians who know what appeals to their people but also have a very sophisticated understanding of geopolitics. if the US doesn't watch itself, Duterte will prove a BIG problem, i think

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Jeff Golick:

@Doug: it is safe in that it is a still image with no sound (meant to add that), but it is not safe in that it is kinda gross.
Avatar 10:21am northguineahills:

Well, the Philippines geopolitcally need the US if they want any influence on China's incursions on their outposts in the Scarborough Shoal and other islets in the South China Sea. Most of my Filipino friends aren't too keen on Duterte (but that was on the runup to the election).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am Doug Schulkind:

My root canal was kind of Erie, Jeff Golick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Doug Schulkind:

I just learned from Discogs that the recording engineer on this Air album was Paul Serrano, a wonderful and unheralded trumpeter in his own right. I had no idea.
Avatar 10:26am ausmanx:

i think the US spends most of its time watching itself, doug! it just doesn't have very good judgement! and Duterte is now negotiating with China on much better terms than the U.S. (not to mention the rebel groups in his own country). he's actually pretty good at it, though you wouldn't know that to read the Western media. in many ways, it would suit the Philippines to be much closer to China
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am Doug Schulkind:

And that led, just now, to my discovery of this blog post talking about Serrano: outsidepants.blogspot.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Jeff Golick:

Can the folks who want to intelligently discuss geopolitics keep it down, please? I thought this was the kids' table.

While we're doing deep Discogs dives, a word for the recently departed Lewis Merenstein, producer of Astral Weeks, and Moondance, and in between, George Burns Sings: www.discogs.com...
Avatar 10:31am northguineahills:

Although, capital punishment for criminals (drug dealers, in Duterte's words) w/o trial is a dangerous precedent.
