Good morning to the best ghetto I know.

Morning, Franny and to all who shall check in shortly

G'mornin', Jeff. I believe this is my first time listening to your show without headphones. A dream at last realized.
Avatar 3:14am
Jeff Conklin:

Morning, Simon. Nice. What kind of speakers?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17am
pacific standard simon:

Basic powered computer speakers. But I have a set of 2.1 speakers available to set up. All part of the process of moving into a roommate-less apartment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20am
pacific standard simon:

It's a big deal because headphones put me to sleep.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25am
joeray:

Good morning, Jeff!
Avatar 3:26am
Jeff Conklin:

Right on, Simon.

What up, Joeray

John in Texas:

Good morning! Congrats PSS for going roommate-less......turn those speakers up! @Jeff, have you ever played anything by, Anne Gillis?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31am

wfmu.org...

Don't see no Anne Gillis.

PSS, thanks for the link! PGR = Poison Gas Research? I'll be searching that episode out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46am

Not sure how much Davy Graham I heard in that.
Avatar 3:53am
Jeff Conklin:

Listen harder

Amazing set again, Jeff! Thank you for always cheering up my Monday morning blues; Stuart in London, UK
Avatar 3:56am
Jeff Conklin:

Aww thanks, Stuart,

Incidentally, I've been listening to Goat's Head Soup A LOT lately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59am

Side-by-side, more like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03am
pacific standard simon:

Heard a bunch of Sandy Bull in that Joe Bethancourt track.
Avatar 4:09am
Jeff Conklin:

Big time Bull in that one

Music writing has always been crap, with a few bright spots. We accepted it because it was all we had. High speed internet has been the antidote to that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16am
pacific standard simon:

I still have my 'best of Rolling Stone'-type paperback collections. Great for reading sphincter-opening nonsense in the bathroom.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22am

These guys should be on the Capricorn label -- they're BETTER.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24am
pacific standard simon:

Jimmy Carter and Dallas County Green, that is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25am
joeray:

Thanks for a great show...last week! I was listening live but had a bad cold so I returned to last week's Avant Ghetto archived show which ended up being multiple plays. I especially liked the first and last hours. I'm sure you've played Dave Evans on the show before but hearing Grey Lady Morning has made me obsessed to get his all his recordings. Was he not that prolific in album releases?
Avatar 4:29am
Bentangle:

Gidday Ghetto Dwellers, great show so far Jeff.
Avatar 4:29am
Jeff Conklin:

Thanks, Joeray.

He did at least four albums in the 70s.
  4:30am
Nick:

Country Funk's "When I'm Without You" sounded eerily similar to Television's "Little Johnny Jewel"...I wonder if Television ripped it off??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31am
pacific standard simon:

Country Funk was more like Steven Stills playing with Quicksilver Messenger Service.
Avatar 4:32am
Jeff Conklin:

@Nick: Nothing surprises me at this point but who knows!?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34am
pacific standard simon:

The congas were a mistake.
Avatar 4:36am
Jeff Conklin:

WHAT?!?!?

Now I know you're just trolling. The conga MAKE that tune. Holy moly
  4:36am
Nick:

@Jeff, Yeah it's funny, lately I've been noticing all these early '70s songs that sound like they might have been influences on Television. There are a couple on Fairport Convention's Liege & Lief. But maybe we project things based on our own way of hearing things! haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39am
pacific standard simon:

It's a fact that Television covered "Knocking On Heaven's Door", so you win that point by default.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42am
pacific standard simon:

I love this version of "Cry Me a River", therefor I am not a troll. QED.
Avatar 4:43am
Jeff Conklin:

It'd be better with congas ;)
  4:43am
Nick:

@PSS, Well, I can understand the Dylan influence...that's a little more obvious. Don'tcha think? Especially since Dylan was such a huge influence on Patti Smith. But are you making the connection to Fairport Convention's cover of "Knocking on Heaven's Door"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45am
joeray:

I know a review of Ryley Walker wouldn't be considered "rock journalism" but Frank Zappa's quote on it is close enough: "People who can't write, doing interviews with people who can't think, to prepare articles for people who can't read!"
  4:48am
Nick:

Nah, I don't buy that Zappa quote...But I do think that Ryley Walker review in the publication that shall remain unnamed is lazy and horrible.
Avatar 4:48am
Jeff Conklin:

Theres a lot of good music writing but I honestly see no point in new record reviews unless it's making interesting connections and/or exposing something obscure to a wider audience.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49am
pacific standard simon:

@joeray - I tend to agree with Zappa but, to be fair, he couldn't write much, and he wasn't all that interested in reading, either.
  4:50am
Nick:

@Jeff - exactly!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53am
pacific standard simon:

I love congas -- especially in late '60s Fleetwood Mac and Santana. Just not in that specific track.
  4:57am
Nick:

This is off topic, but speaking of influences on people...Y'know how everyone's been writing about all the 1980s sci-fi/horror influences on Stranger Things? Well, there's that one scene with Hopper tearing through his home to find a bugging device that seemed an homage to the ending of Coppola's "The Conversation". And I haven't seen anyone mention it yet. I love things like that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01am
pacific standard simon:

@Nick - Haven't been watching it or writing about it.

Hey Jeff and ghetto folk, looks like i've missed two excellent hours.
Have Matt and Erika split up? I've been seeing "mv" without the "ee" a lot online these days...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03am

Or even been reading about it. Must be something wrong with me.

@PSS, that last comment was for Jeff.

Hey Jeff, That Mike Cooper is pretty righteous. I remember looking for that Machine Gun album a while back...I'll keep digging! Good meeting you the other day, Nick

I usually miss the first 2 hours also but listen from the beginning while coming home from work.

@Nicky T, I wish we had met, but you must have me mixed up with a different Nick! :)
