Can someone explain to me, I have read that the DNC emails are supposed to show they favored Hillary over Bernie, but I haven't been able to find anywhere what they actually DID to give the nomination to Hillary. Were there actual illegal/immoral actions by them (I know they're supposed to be neutral, but still doesn't add up to me)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Doug Schulkind:

I anyone shocked, shocked that the DNC was tilted to the establishment candidate? That is what party leadership is all about. Politically, I am to the left of Bernie Sanders, but this DNC shit is tedious. Time to keep our eyes on squashing the great obscenity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am holland oats:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Webhamster Henry:

You might do well to follow Robert Reich's advice: get Trump out of the way, immediately start building up a new party (I won't say third, that implies too few parties...) that is basically the Democratic Socialists that Bernie didn't have in place to run with.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:21am listener james from westwood:

The aspect of the Democratic Party that most makes me hold my nose when voting is the DNC.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Doug Schulkind:

My opinion: The goal of every Bernie supporter should be to turn the Senate and make Bernie majority leader. THAT would be historic.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:23am listener james from westwood:

@Webmaster Henry: A couple of speakers urged downballot voting. That's where such a push for a new party has to start, where it can make systemic changes needed to sustain non R and D candidates.
@Doug: That would be delicious. Would love to see Reid rusticated. Lotsa open space in Nevada for him. The Laxalts could recommend a nice ranch somewhere.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:23am doctorjazz:

THAT would give him clout; probably more than if he was president with a hostile congress.
(Great set, btw)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am holland oats:

that's the lesson of obama - hope is a great starter dish, but change comes only through keeping up the fight i.e. voting those midterms

Avatar 9:34am ndbob:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Doug Schulkind:

@ndbob
If Bernie doesn't have the skills to be Majority Leader, he sure as shoot doesn't have the skills to be in the oval office. Politically, I am more closely aligned to Bernie than any presidential candidate in my lifetime. But I feared that his presidency would have been a disaster that would have damaged and set back progressivism for generations.

But this is all moot. There is only one sane, rational choice. In my opinion.

@ausmax I'm not going to get into that @Doug - I agree about Bernie as president - decent man - with many ideas I support - but not a leader
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Doug Schulkind:

Bernie has already done a remarkable thing for the Democrats and for our country. Hillary was forced to tack left and address income inequality in a way she never would have otherwise. Now her presidency will be beholden to the left. This in turn stretches the center back to the center from where it had drifted rightward for years. For this, Bernie is a hero. Occupy!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:47am doctorjazz:

Absolutely, Hillary is so left of Bill now, it's really interesting. Of course, that is what folks disliked about her in the first place, her positions do shift. But, man, I don't think the politicians locked into their ideology move anything forward, that's been the gridlock of the past, oh, maybe 20 years, starting with Newt.

@ausmanx
You aren't seriously making any sort of judgment about "our times" based on a comments board.

"Left" and "Right" are just stories we tell ourselves. They are fictions. Meanwhile, we live in a real world with real consequences resulting from our choices. To see Hillary as anything other than an alternative to President Trump is, in my opinion, foolish.

Avatar 10:06am ausmanx:

i don't dismiss what people put on the comments board, doug. i think the folks are quite serious about what they are posting here. Pasolini's point is simply about human behaviour and political behaviour, and there are manifestations of that. i personally think it's foolish to expect of Hillary anything better than President Trump if you live anywhere else in the world, especially in Palestine, Eastern Europe, Russia, China, etc, where she will unquestionably be a disaster

I sit here and silent sob in my office as I listen to Ms. Hamer speak. Although this is 42 years ago I feel there is still some pertinence what she is saying maybe not at the scale that she exposes here but it still exists. I look at the "times" as they are and have been for the last 60 + years and continue to have to come to conclusion that I really don't want to come to. That we as a species as whole (not as individuals) have failed. We take on a conceited stance that we hold abilities and mindsets that our actions have proven time and time again we do not. I live with a constant want to have the utmost faith in my species but I have seen nothing to make me believe we almost have no hope but to live in this consistent negative loop. Believe me this is not a feeling of cynicism and flavor of the month pessimism. I want to be wrong I don't want us to fail but I come to find it very hard to find any positive in us on a larger level of whole and most of my happiness with the human race comes from the direct action I have with people but I really don't see on the scale of taking all of our actions as an overall species and comparing them good v bad that we have much to be proud of to put in our history books in the present and recent past.

And Obama was firmly AGAINST marriage equality. Whatever he felt personally, as a politician, he saw it as the third rail it was. Until it wasn't.

@Jeff Golick I honestly believe that a post revolution world is going to not look much different than it does now at least in the western world. The changes will come in how the day to day activities in politics and "order keeping" will change. Any true uprising again in the "western developed world" will be quashed pretty quickly and use as an example for creating a protective Totalitarianism bringing more of the actions being done covertly now out to the fore under the guise of protection and safety.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am joe:

@annie there are so many issues I have with a supposed "revolution".
And that's with out even getting into the sociopolitical opinions I have on the fact. Just take the sheer might of "the man" that would devastate any revolutionary upheaval.

Did you see that NYker cartoon? : An office worker, drink in hand, asking a colleague: "Why do the martinis always taste better at work?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Jeff Golick:

This here.

Final "political" thought: at the risk of seeming overly naive or simplistic. one thing I think is sorely needed and in ever-dwindling supply is empathy. In a "conversation" focused on "winners" and "losers," us/them conflicts, etc., it becomes impossible to imagine POVs other than one's own. We're distracted, tired, joylessly consuming the minutes...how to dredge up the generosity of spirit required to find the common humanity in us all?

Ok back to work.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:57am Brian in UK:

@Jeff that should be part of our every waking moment but unfortunately we seem to like the word blame too much to ever coalesce.

Doug, thanks for the Kenya set. I've been to the Melodica store in Nairobi (twice).

On politics: I loved the statement by Bloomberg at the DNC, "I'm a New Yorker and I know a con when I see one." And, "let's elect a sane, competent person." Nuff said. Sanity and competence must count for something, right? And isn't it about time a woman was elected to the post?

  11:47am Mr C:

Robert Knight sang the original version of "Everlasting Love."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Doug Schulkind:

Hi, Hugo!

Wikipedia:
"Everlasting Love" is a song written by Buzz Cason and Mac Gayden, originally a 1967 hit for Robert Knight and since remade several times, most successfully by the Love Affair, Carl Carlton and Sandra. In 1989, U2 released a version of "Everlasting Love" as a B-side on various formats of the "All I Want Is You" single.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Doug Schulkind:

In 2012, Trump was lauding Bloomberg on Twitter. Now he is deriding him as "Little Mike Bloomberg." So fucking juvenile.
  11:49am Dean:

@Hugo: It was time to elect a female president when Shirley Chisholm ran, so, yeah. Sanity and competence aren't sufficient, perhaps not even necessary, for those who believe effectiveness is measured purely in terms of wealth and swagger. Trump's sanity is his own business, they might insist. And the proof of competence is in the pudding: look at all those buildings with his name on the marquee!

Glad to see Ailes leaving Fox. Fox has done irreparable damage to US politics. What the heck are Rupert Murdoch's motivations? I think money (ego/pride) and conservatism (he is an ego-driven elitist). Supposedly, Murdoch's sons aren't so conservative...

I actually think the best thing to do re Trump is stop paying attention. Will never happen, but I'm pretty sure he withers and dies if not bathed in klieg lights and surrounded by microphones every 6-12 hours.

Love trumps hate vs. Love Trump's hate is a pretty concise summation, imo.
