Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from July 22, 2016 Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

I shit you not, this is an abstract of a recent paper by a statistician at Columbia: "How are people unconsciously influenced by the rise of Donald Trump? We test the theory that Trump’s rise has irrationally changed the behavior of one group of people: elite bridge players, whom we assume are otherwise completely typical. We examine the hands played in one of the premier North American bridge events, the Vanderbilt Knockout Tournament, in 1999 and 2015. We find that players had significantly higher probabilities of making No Trump contracts in the 2015 period compared with the earlier periods. We conclude that in the latter period, defending players are subtly deranged by the prospect of Trump and play their hands worse. By contrast, a 2015 European tournament shows no significant difference with the earlier 1999 tournament. This strengthens our conclusion."

Great Man album, great Cipollina appearance. So why did I get rid of it? That's easy. I'm an idiot.

Uncle Michael:

Glad you're here to enjoy it, Kevin.

Uncle Michael:

Wilson, I've never tried the Naga Jolkia. Probably won't. I have nothing to prove.
  2:20pm
Dean:

Bigfat's 808 is a Naga Jolkia sauce. Really, it's not *that* hot, but it is oddly smoky, where the less fired-up 707 is rich in citrus, better suited with a wide range of food.

Today is a day to celebrate Clinton. George, that is. He turns 75.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm
Uncle Michael:

I like him.

Commander in chief of the Mothership! I think the only political paraphernalia I ever wore was a George Clinton for President pin I made.

XXX better for daily use. Naga Jolokia will uh... make your gravity fail you.

I'm with him.

After I reported hearing and enjoying Trementina, Le Hell Gang, and Föllakzoid on WFMU some weeks ago, a friend of mine from Chile reported that Los Tres and Los Bunkers are also very fine Chilean bands.

From chiles to Chile. This is a great thread.

Dean:

@Wilson K: Readers who join the conversation in medias res, however, might be puzzled by your remark that "XXX better for daily use."
Avatar 2:34pm
Wilson K:

@Dean, puzzlement is good. Leads to inquiry. And thanks for putting me on to Bigfat's—gonna check that out.

Dean:

There is no question in my mind that Dave Rawlings and Gillian Welch pay attention to the Louvin Brothers.

Do y'all always wear a condiment? I'm tending more toward building from scratch, these days.

After cleaning chiles to make tamales, guys, do not go pee-pee without first washing the hands or removing the gloves.

Awesome bed music today BTW

...and of course wash again after you've finished before returning to tamale preparation.
