I've always been a fan of early Walsh/James Gang tuneage... Hence the reason I recognized it!

@Simon: I wanted to make that joke but considering how strong this show's UK fanbase is, I skipped it.

The guy who just delivered our groceries: "Oo, what is this? I like this". Showed him on the app and he's going to look it up when he gets home.

@Bryan: Me too :(

I wince when i think people tune in and listen on laptop speakers.

@jeff -- well i do at least have actual speakers plugged into the computer. But they're not a huge improvement.

Morning to all.

Normally I'd be listening on headphones but I set up some cheap-yet-surprisingly-competent speakers in my office at the weekend.

I'm listening on a mini-system in the kitchen. When I'm not cooking it's the stereo in the lounge. I've got my girlfriend into your show, it's a Monday night tradition here.

Happy 4th Everyone! Jeff, I'm listening at work via the WFMU app on my iPhone. Sorry to make you wince, but at least I'm tuned in and listening.

Just the old computer with headphones, to avoid waking the roomies. Hoping to have some nice speakers once I get a solo apartment.

Morning Jeff. Love Steve Hillage, check Julian Cope's review of the album, so good - www.headheritage.co.uk... Julian has done a massive amount of research in compiling this archive. Great show.

I usually listen on headphones, and occasionally listen on my harmon/kardon stereo speakers (depends on whether the spacemates are around or not), but tonight, I'm listening on (I hate to say it) on amazon echo bluetooth speaker (catsiitting for a friend). And I gotta say it's totally awesome to tell your speaker what to play... very HAL 2000

It would be kinda cool to run the sound from my computer through a tube amp. Probably cost a few Benjamins, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22am

Or maybe only a Benjamin and a half:

Holy smoke, the old McIntosh amps really run to big bucks on ebay!
Avatar 4:33am
Jeff Conklin:

@Simon: I haven't. My roommate got an old Fisher tube amp cheap about a year ago and we use that in the living room. Sounds real nice.

Next item on my list is a turntable so I can listen to the remains of my record collection again. After that, who knows...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40am
pacific standard simon:

When I was a wee sprout, we had a Garrard turntable and a tube amp that fed a pair of speakers that my father built himself. The amp was replaced by something more modern before I was old enough to distinguish between brands.

I usually listen to the Avant Ghetto at work so I am limited to Apple headphones since I have to wear very open-air and portable headphones while at work. When I re-listen to archives of this show I listen on Klipsch LaScalas, Fi X single ended tube triode amp. I also have original Quad ESL's that are very finicky in terms of amplification, so I am waiting to repair the Quad 22 amps that work so well with them. I would love to listen to archives of the Avant Ghetto on them, especially the acoustic sets, since electrostatic speakers in general and original Quads in particular reproduce vocals and acoustic guitars with a magical quality. Still, the musical point gets across with my cheap Apple headphones!

I appear to have (for once) tuned in at the right moment. But is this the beginning or end of "Out-Bloody-Rageous" i wonder? This album is the Canterbury pinnacle...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45am
the Canterbury wood-elf:

Yeah! i get to hear the whole thing! Great looking setlist Jeff. I love that Hillage album (should really be attributed to Hillage-Giraudy as Miquette wrote/played equally on it, but Virgin Records weren't into that).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47am
pacific standard simon:

I'll go with the first album in regard to pinnacle-tude.

Stefan:

@Jeff, I have to listen via the internet & earphones; at home, I play the archives viaa (verry modest standard) stereo amplifyer & speakers or via an internet-radio with an additional speaker - we are sharing as a family of four a 3-room flat and simply do not have much room, listening to music has to fit in. I grew up with a radio and still cherish the experience of personally curated shows (@Guido form Cologne: you might have as well enjoyed the 80ies WDR1 station, BFBS and BBC); But the internet is also a trove: Matching Mole performing "Gloria Gloom"(Bill MacCormick) and "Part of the Dance"(Phil Miller), live on the French TV program "Rockenstock" in 1972

the Canterbury wood-elf:

In fact, Soft Machine toured with Hendrix in '68, before they'd even recorded the first album. Hendrix was dead by the time Third came out. Wyatt, Ayers and Ratledge were all incredibly self-deprecating about their work, so I wouldn't take their dismissive remarks at face value. There's a bootleg from Davenport, Iowa from that tour and it's one of the most mindblowing things you'll ever hear (if you can listen through the appalling sound quality). And I've heard from people who saw that tour and were completely transformed by the Soft Machine. I can imagine certain minds weren't quite ready for it though...
