Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from May 27, 2016 Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

I think I have only been to an arena concert once. If I had a job of designing an expensive arena concert for a band, I would hire some illusionists as consultants, and design the show so that it looks like the band members frequently materialize among the stands.

I can't find a correlation between venue size or seating location and quality of show. Cheap Trick got better the bigger the venue, for instance. I've heard Brotzmann in big venues (the arena in Victoriaville) and small (a hole in the wall in Berkeley). Both were impressive, albeit in different ways. I did enjoy sitting directly at stage center once at a Jimmy Smith show, but mostly because after I ordered a second martini, he told me to cut down on drinking.

My only arena concert was Bowie's Let's Dance tour, I think I was 13 and it was exciting and disappointing at the same time, because we were so far from the stage.

I saw a jazz/improv show at Le Poisson Rouge on Wednesday night and found it... frustrating. Smallish room, but SO MUCH TALKING. I don't fully understand the need? point? of talking throughout a perfornace in an intimate space. Like, if you want background music, feel free to listen at home.

I can report some of the same at the Brotzmann show last week, Jeff G. Not SO MUCH, but SOME chatter while the musicians were working. And of course the requisite holding-up of phone cameras to capture stills and videos.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm
joe:

@jeff golick that is a very strange shaped room. I've come to find in the NYC area many of the people who show up at shows are not there with any interest as to what is going on but want to have the ability to say they were there. I was at an acoustic show in the basement of Bowery Electric and the audience and the artist had to ask people to keep their voices down.

@joe: yeah, it's a weird room. Weird vibe, too. Not quite sure what it wants to be or something. And yes, agreed re NYC folks who show up simply as simply something to do -- "let's see a show" -- and aren't really there to listen. Which seems weird to me, but...I probably seem weird to them.

We saw ZZ Top at The Greek Theater, which is a pretty intimate venue, GREAT SHOW!!!
Also funny cause audience were mostly three generations of bikers, tattooed grandads, moms & dads and kids,(kids had transfer tats), and the adults were passing joints back and forth the whole time. Smoke thick enough to be a stage effect.

i saw the dead once. my first concert -c.1977, at madison square garden. it was an interesting study in sociology, but not interesting enough to see them again. staying home with the records and a flock of deadhead girls; smoking and maybe drinking or tripping was much more satisfying.

Yep. Once being dropped off at work pre-8:00 a.m. I noticed a line of folks forming for the evening's show. I wondered who it might be, so I checked the calendar. Turns out it was a young pop celeb, Ed somebody-or-other, whom my 10YO knew about. I realized (yet again) how out of it I've become. Another time I mentioned to a buddy of mine that Peter Gabriel was playing "across the street." He and I used to travel up and down the state to Gabriel shows in the early '80s.
