Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm Gary:

I'm tearing my ears away from what you sent earlier now so I can listen in ... hi, James!

No need to tear, just unzip!

Dean, speaking truth to power!

Well, to the IRS, yes. I always and exclusively speak the truth to the IRS.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm Doug Schulkind:

And speaking of the Topeka Board of Ed, welcome aboard, Uncle Michael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Uncle Michael:

It's only "Brown" because Linda Brown's parents' name came first, alphabetically, from among a large group of plaintiffs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm Doug Schulkind:

@Uncle Michael
It is alphabetical, but the NAACP specifically wanted Oliver Brown as the lead plantiff.
Avatar 6:11pm geezerette:

greetings Doug and Drummers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Doug Schulkind:

Good evening, coel man!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm Uncle Michael:

Someday I'll tell you all about my encounters with Linda Brown and Charles Scott's widow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm Doug Schulkind:

Was she Linda Brown Smith when you encountered her, or are you going further back?!
Avatar 6:15pm geezerette:

Wow Uncle Michael. Tell us today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm Uncle Michael:

She was Smith when I met her. My views of her are far less affectionate than are my views of the wonderful Mrs. Scott.
Avatar 6:17pm geezerette:

Tell us about Mrs. Scott.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm Doug Schulkind:

I have no need for Ms. Smith to live up to any particular expectation. (Not saying all that that you do, Uncle M.) She was thrust into history and never too pleased about it. Bless her, still.
  6:20pm Dean:

One of my favorite professors (now, alas, deceased) clerked for Justice Marshall in the late '70s.
Avatar 6:21pm geezerette:

And the pity is that Brown was followed by busing which led to white flight and the public schools were abandoned. It's history but not over.
  6:24pm Dean:

A current young history scholar is on the trail, e.g., here: http://www.amazon.com/Color-America-Has-Changed-California/dp/0199927596
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm Uncle Michael:

Mrs. Scott was a tiny, lovely old woman with a gentle manner and courtly manners. Her husband Charles and he brother were among the first African-American attorneys in Kansas. Charles, more than anyone, drove this case. Mrs. Scott's personal mission was to see that Scott was not shunted aside by history. She largely failed. She'd surface to tell her tale on the occasion of various anniversaries. It was her belief that the decision by the national organization to have Marshall take over arguments before the SCOTUS was unnecessary, and that this shifted the public perception of who did what in ways that were inconsistent with the realities in the trenches. She was a gracious but tenacious crusader for a correction of the historical record and never expressed any personal animosity with regard to Marshall.
Avatar 6:27pm geezerette:

What IS good is that public schools in some places have extremely diverse populations and kids make friends with anyone they like.
Very encouraging.
  6:28pm Dean:

I'm lucky to live in one of those places. There are on the order of 30 native languages spoken at my son's elementary school, sometimes even a dozen in a single classroom.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm Doug Schulkind:

At my suburban Maryland elementary school African American students were bused in from inner city Washington beginning in 1967. There was a degree of ugliness behind the scenes, but our principal was an African American woman who handled the transitions magnificently and kept the community from pulling apart. (This is my 7-year-old self's memory talking.) To accommodate the incoming students from D.C., eight white students in the first grade were promoted directly to third grade the following year. I was one of those students, but my parents wouldn't let me skip a grade.

And I kind of never forgave them...
  6:29pm Jeff g.:

Now more than ever.
  6:32pm Dean:

But if you'd skipped second grade, Doug, you wouldn't know how to subtract or pronounce words with Q, X, or Z.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm Doug Schulkind:

@Uncle Michael
Wasn't there a school in Topeka ultimately named after Scott?
  6:32pm Jeff g.:

I mean: http://mobile.nytimes.com/2016/05/18/us/cleveland-mississippi-school-district-desegregate.html
Avatar 6:33pm ndbob:

I taught a class in African-American studies a few times - always devoted a couple hours to the history of the legal strategy used to desegregate schools.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm Doug Schulkind:

In second grade, I had Miss Languasco for a teacher. She married a soldier serving in Vietnam during the school year, and he returned stateside for the wedding, which the entire class attended, he in full uniform. Miss Languasco would not abide by my decision not to stand for the pledge of allegiance, and she would haul me to my feet, pulling me up by the ears. Once, when she wasn't looking, I blew my nose in the American flag.
  6:35pm Dean:

The Stars and Boogers Forever!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm Uncle Michael:

Yes, Doug. My sister-in-law taught at Scott Magnet School.
Avatar 6:37pm ndbob:

Never did anything like that Doug - but I refused to participate in civil defense drills
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Uncle Michael:

I think it's safe to say that without Mrs. Scott, there would be no Scott Magnet School.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm coelacanth:

wow, Doug! you were one of those kids? I was one of those kids! but i didn't start not standing (or saying it) until the 7th grade.
...'got lots of shit for it from students, as well as Hero status from others. some teachers told me they're going to have me arrested.
Avatar 6:43pm geezerette:

A lot packed into an hour Doug.
Love everyone's stories.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm Uncle Michael:

I can't remember at what age I began opting out of the loyalty oath.
Avatar 6:44pm geezerette:

Me too.
  6:45pm Jeff g.:

Loyalty oath = pledge of allegiance?
Avatar 6:46pm ndbob:

i always said the pledge of allegiance though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm Uncle Michael:

Yes. Isn't that what it is?
  6:46pm Dean:

As God is my witness, I swear on a stack of Bibles I've never uttered a loyalty oath.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:47pm listener james from westwood:

Been listening in the kitchen over taco making and digging what I'm hearing, especially Gil S-H. I'm also hoping a Dante-esque fate greeted Miss Languasco in whatever circle of Hell deliberately cruel teachers end up in.
Avatar 6:47pm ndbob:

but I told my teacher the civil defense drills were stupid
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm Doug Schulkind:

We ducked and covered in elementary school. We also had a nuclear fallout shelter in the basement. I can still see the scary black-and-yellow-triangles logo painted on the cinderblock wall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm coelacanth:

i told them i'd say it if it was revised to not lie about "freedom and justice for all" and nix the god reference.
Avatar 6:49pm geezerette:

A short stack with butter & syrup.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm Uncle Michael:

Civil defense drills were a lie. You were going to die a horrible death but prior to that, that reality could be obfuscated and the government could fool themselves into believing that at least the panic could be minimized.
Avatar 6:50pm ndbob:

There's a great how to build a fallout shelter record
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm Doug Schulkind:

Speaking of the federal courts and Kansas, this decision just came down: electionlawblog.org...

james, was her name "mrs. hellinger"?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:51pm listener james from westwood:

I always liked the television bits the UK had for surviving a nuclear attack. The Protect & Survive ones. One was excerpted at the start of Frankie Goes to Hollywood's "Two Tribes," but I didn't make the connection until I actually saw the shorts on YouTube.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks for that link, Doug. Kris Kobach will be our next governor.

@coel: Nope, Miss Virgilio. Thought I had ADHD b/c I bobbed my foot up and down while listening to her deadass delivery style. She told my mom this. My mom essentially told her GFY.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:53pm listener james from westwood:

And by "essentially," I mean it is essential you imagine my mother using her born-and-bred Bronx accent to say, "Go fuck yerself."
  6:54pm Jeff g.:

@UM : just clarifying. Wasn't 100% sure that's what you were referring to.

James, that's Awesome! my mom was the opposite. she was so mortified at the idea of us embarrassing her that she'd always side with anyone else who expressed a grievance with any of us.
