	1:12pm JakeGould: Love this conversation. And yeah, HotTopic seems like a cheap way out/in but growing up in deep Brooklyn in the 1970s and 1980s, I used to get hassled just for the 1" inch buttons I wore on my denim jacket… And taking the subway to “the city” took 1 hour but it was worth it…

	1:18pm JakeGould: Technology is great nowadays. I wish I had the tech we had now when I was a teen. So much easier to learn about cool things… But the downside is local scenes don’t form the way they used to. Nowadays people are compartmentalized into exactly what they like. So if you live in the middle of nowhere, the metal kids, punk kids, queer kids, hardcore kids and others have less and less reason to form a “Freak and Geek” group of their own.
	1:20pm Cecile: and parents are so afraid of older people being friends with younger people (thanks to creeps who have abused this) that it's almost like there's no different perspective or voice of reason in these scenes.
	1:22pm Dean: Not saying there isn't an upside to technology. I live in California and listen regularly to a "radio" station out of New Jersey! But there are costs we neglect to take into account. We pay dearly for convenience and access to "information."
	1:22pm Cliff: Wow, I had no idea Moby started out in 80's hardcore...worlds colliding
	1:22pm JakeGould: I do almost think in some areas that are not 100% hick, but not 100% city scenes can form because of a need for local knowledge. Like deep parts of Brooklyn or parts of NJ that are close enough to the PATH to get to “the city” but still a pain.

	1:24pm Dean: Believe me, there is value to not having photos. For example, I attended every Grateful Dead live show ever, and nobody has the pictures to prove otherwise.
	1:24pm JakeGould: That kind of “final mile” of knowledge can breed scenes. But saying tech is destroying things is regressive… Yeah, I have fond memories of the old ways of trying to be cool, but still… There will always be new things.
	1:24pm geezerette: @Jake:it's a bigger problem than most people are willing to acknowledge. this is what net neutrality was about. there's been so much corporate media consolidation that tech interfaces are extremely mediated. there is a trojan horse aspect even though we all love tech it's important to maintain critical thinking skills.

Forget about net neutrality; posting your own personal blog nowadays is impractical because of many different reasons… It’s almost at the point where coming up with some print zine/blog hybrid is worth it for some things. In the art world zine (printed) are making a comeback. People will always figure out ways to communicate in a way that works for them.

I have a kinda trivial question: Did she know the Claw Hammer cover of Devo before Kowalskis decided to cover it, too? @JakeGould: "People will always figure out ways to communicate in a way that works for them." Amen. I think of Harold Love's book about "Scribal Publication in Seventeenth-century England." Well into the second century of print technology there were pockets of publication of handwritten documents.

	1:44pm JakeGould: I’m picking up drawing again. I work in tech and played around with sketch apps. I hate them and only see them useful if I have no choice. I invested in a few sketch pads and even some speedball pens to get me to create again. Works better for me.
	1:45pm Cecile: I tried a few sketch apps. I either have to use my laptop and a stylus or pen and paper. Too hard on those apps.

	1:18pm JakeGould: Technology is great nowadays. I wish I had the tech we had now when I was a teen. So much easier to learn about cool things… But the downside is local scenes don’t form the way they used to. Nowadays people are compartmentalized into exactly what they like. So if you live in the middle of nowhere, the metal kids, punk kids, queer kids, hardcore kids and others have less and less reason to form a “Freak and Geek” group of their own.
	1:20pm Cecile: and parents are so afraid of older people being friends with younger people (thanks to creeps who have abused this) that it's almost like there's no different perspective or voice of reason in these scenes.
	1:22pm Dean: Not saying there isn't an upside to technology. I live in California and listen regularly to a "radio" station out of New Jersey! But there are costs we neglect to take into account. We pay dearly for convenience and access to "information."

	1:22pm JakeGould: I do almost think in some areas that are not 100% hick, but not 100% city scenes can form because of a need for local knowledge. Like deep parts of Brooklyn or parts of NJ that are close enough to the PATH to get to “the city” but still a pain.

	1:24pm Dean: Believe me, there is value to not having photos. For example, I attended every Grateful Dead live show ever, and nobody has the pictures to prove otherwise.

Forget about net neutrality; posting your own personal blog nowadays is impractical because of many different reasons… It’s almost at the point where coming up with some print zine/blog hybrid is worth it for some things. In the art world zine (printed) are making a comeback. People will always figure out ways to communicate in a way that works for them.

	1:44pm JakeGould: I’m picking up drawing again. I work in tech and played around with sketch apps. I hate them and only see them useful if I have no choice. I invested in a few sketch pads and even some speedball pens to get me to create again. Works better for me.
