Stanley funny you should write that, I went for a haircut on Monday and at the end he asked me whether I would like my eyebrows trimmed; living on the edge I said yus.

Avatar 9:13am ndbob:

and on it goes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Doug Schulkind:

@David in Cleveland
I was first a Washington Senators fan, but they deserted me twice (to Minnesota, then Texas). I became a Mets fan in '68 and never looked back. Then added the Orioles as my American League team (I grew up in Maryland). Was devastated by the Pirates' World Series slaying of the O's in '71 and '79. But moved to Pittsburgh in 2010 and have found it impossible not to cheer for my new hometown squad.

Buccos sounds like a breakfast cereal.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Jeff Golick:

Speaking of baseball, would anyone care for a trivia question I fielded yesterday?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am melinda:

Hello everyone. Very much not a morning person but listening and typing takes little effort, at least.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Doug Schulkind:

Good morningmelinda!
  9:38am Listener Robert:

Took me a while to figure out the quote from "Rolling on the River" in that talkover music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Doug Schulkind:

Leaf-blower guy IS HERE!

Hey Jeff Golick, lay that trivia on my baby!

Howdy, Listener Robert!
  9:41am Listener Robert:

Is that the same leaf-blower guy who visits Uncle Michael?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Doug Schulkind:

"When life was finger-lickin' good and God lived in our neighborhood."

Jesus, that is beautiful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Jeff Golick:

Ok: there are three MLB starting pitchers who racked up 20 wins in their final season. Name any/all of 'em!
  9:44am Listener Robert:

Hmmm...same leaf blower guy..."Pittsburgh"..."Topeka"...sure, can't fool me, you're both in the trailer in the lot between WFMU & the P.O. in J.C. The whole story of the GTDS was to provide an alibi for...some crime yet to be detected.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Doug Schulkind:

Gotta be Sandy Koufax, amirite?
Avatar 9:48am annie:

well, i'm gonna go play with the yahoo mail thingy, might have to bring it up to the 21st century and find out whta kind of stuff has been "lost"; listening but not commenting. heart you, doug
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am melinda:

I don't think it was a leaf blower but while I was sitting outside someone across the ravine was using a loud machine that eventually led to a grey cloud drifting over my way and a thin coat of particulate on the notebook I was writing in. Couldn't tell if it was organic matter or not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Jeff Golick:

Bing bing bing! Koufax is mos def one of them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Jeff Golick:

Here's the line Koufax put up in his last-ever MLB game:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Robert
Sandy's best stonking years were behind him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Doug Schulkind:

And yes, Barbara Mandrell is still with us.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Alex In Illinois:

@Brian in UK: Babs Mandrell is still among the living.
@melinda: I would still consider "leaf blower" a possibility. Those things do stir up anything that can be stirred up. Wood chipper is still another possibility. Actually, even a lawnmower running over some kind of dust could do that too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Doug Schulkind:

Welcome, Sir Alex of Illinois!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:58am Brian in UK:

Thanks, no idea where that thought came from, obviously the music playing but why her, used to have one of her records, briefly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Jeff Golick:

Ok, some further Koufax notes: that last game was on two days of rest. And it wasn't the last game he pitched in, only the last regular season game he pitched in. Which clinched the pennant for the Dodgers (vs. Jim Bunning). /geekingout
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Alex In Illinois:

When I look up Mandrell, and see her on YouTube or Hee Haw reruns, everything shows her as a Country Singer. But for some reason my memory associates her with Disco.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:00am listener james from westwood:

Dolly! Sounding pleasantly Cash-ulent.
  10:01am Maggie B.:

Dolly! Doug! Drummers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Stanley:

Lovin' this country feast.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:01am Brian in UK:

There also a funk band called Mandrill with a red-ass creature on the cover.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Doug Schulkind:

Don't bring up Mike Mussina, Jeff Golick, unless its about him going into the Hall of Fame wearing an Orioles cap. (He was a secret double agent when he went to the Yankees. They never won the Series with him on the team. Haha!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
Barbara Mandrill. Can...not...get...image...out of....my....head.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Parq:

Murlphlgh. I came to, uh, I mean woke up, to "Color My World" and thought it was Dolly. And now I've actually heard Dolly. Brings a nice circle to things.

Hey, Artie Haywire, coelacanth and Jesse "He's OK" K!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Uncle Michael:

Dilemma:

I have a dying power supply in a MicroATX case. I can buy a different, maybe-compatible replacement for $65 or buy the same case as I have, with the identical power supply (that I'm 100% sure is compatible) for $70, use the power supply and trash a perfectly good, brand new case.

What should I do?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Doug Schulkind:

@Uncle Michael
Climb a tree and wait for Jeff Moore.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:12am Brian in UK:

@ljfw
With Billy Gibbons!
Avatar 🥁 10:13am βrian:

Plan β
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Uncle Michael:

I think so too. I can give the case to someone that has enough parts computers that he can probably make use of it, eventually.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:13am listener james from westwood:

The temptation to go with the exact same case you know to be compatible is very very strong, UM. I don't like tech surprises.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:14am doctorjazz:

Nice stuff, always good to have some "out" jazz to disturb the staff here...
I remember Koch, Kapelli and Shutz from years back, put out some good albums. Looks like they dropped one member.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Doug Schulkind:

Good morning, Parq! Hello, Dolly!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Jeff Golick:

Ok, so the other two pitchers who had 20 wins in their final seasons? Here's a clue: they pitched for the same team.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Uncle Michael:

I executed Plan B.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am coelacanth:

Uncle M, for most people that's a no brainer. but i'd have the same dilemma. many times i've made buying decisions based mostly on environmental considerations; and many times it didn't work and i ultimately contributed even more to landfill than if i'd gone with option B.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Doug Schulkind:

I already said Mike Mussina, Jeff Golick. If playing for the Yankees counts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Uncle Michael:

That's a valuable lesson-learned, coelacanth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Stanley:

I like it when this sort of stuff is playing and in walks the good lady, roll of eyes a "what the hell is this playing?", a quick turnaround and exit. Love it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Doug Schulkind:

"Give the Drummer Some, disappointing good ladies since the 1980s."

@doctorjazz
That was a great trio.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Webhamster Henry:

And now, a track from your newest Pulitzer Prize winner.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:29am listener james from westwood:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Jeff Golick:

Gosh, Doug, apologies! Mussina is correct! But I'll need to update the answer to four (4) now, as he wasn't part of the original answer I was given.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am Andrew Waterloo:

Mortified if you missed anyone?! From what I've seen of DJing & maintaining a playlist, you always impress me that you can also comment so much in real time.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Alex In Illinois:

Piledriver is a song by Stanard Ridgeway, that I was thinking of this morning.
  10:43am Listener Gregory:

I didn't see that Threadgill Pulitzer coming. But that album was more like classical chamber music than jazz (as usually performed), so it kind of makes sense that the committee broke out of its mold. A bit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Stanley:

Afternoon show = evening show for us over here. Woo hoo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am melinda:

Little Danny is in Marfa? Far out. I have family in that region and it's still weird to me that it has become hip.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Doug Schulkind:

Embrace the enigma, Jesse K. (Then French kiss the enigma.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Doug Schulkind:

Little Danny is in Marfa. He does a Wednesday night show on KRTS on public radio there. We will have his Thursday nights here on the Drummer Stream (with an entirely different show)!
  10:46am Listener Gregory:

Also, don't quote me on this, but I have it in my head that the group name is pronounced zoh-id, not zoo-id. Can anyone confirm or deny?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
I basically reject out of hand all that award and prize crap until someone I love wins. Then I'm all in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Doug Schulkind:

I'm always the last to know, Listener Gregory.
  10:49am Listener Gregory:

When they gave the Pulitzer to Wynton Marsalis, they *didn't* break out of the mold. But at least they didn't reject his work because it had a saxophone or something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Stanley:

Riddim go farward
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am Jeff Golick:

@Listener Gregory: it's ZOO-id.
  10:58am Listener Gregory:

Yikes! According to the Boston Pheonix: 'Zooid (pronounced "zoh-oid")'!!! And there's a YouTube video consisting entirely of someone pronouncing this word in this way. I wish I could say I'm making this up. Doug, you just keep pronouncing it your way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am Doug Schulkind:

@Alex in Illinois
Wall of Voodoo Piledrivers. Sounds like a horror film.
  10:59am Listener Gregory:

@Jeff I'm sorry I brought it up. Please can we erase all the comments on this topic so that I never have to think of "zoh-oid" again?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Doug Schulkind:

I saw that YouTube link whilst searching just now, Listener Gregory. Was tempted to add it to the show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Jeff Golick:

I'll let you decide. How do YOU pronounce Zooid?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Doug Schulkind:

Was one of them Milt Pappas? He just died, so maybe that's why the trivia came up. (I am so sleuthful.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am Jeff Golick:

@Doug: I say ZOO-id. Having spoken previously with the Pi Recordings guys and also having interviewed Threadgill for the old blog, I'm sure I would've been corrected had I got it wrong.
  11:03am Listener Gregory:

I bow to your expertise, @Jeff. However, under no circumstances should you watch www.youtube.com/watch?v=vaKZcOKUUiI .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am Doug Schulkind:

But how do you pronounce "druid"? (Thank you, Sir.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Stanley:

How's your Jamaican patois, Doug?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Jeff Golick:

I was skeered to death to meet/interview Threadgill, but couldn't pass up the opportunity. We met at De Robertis Pasticceria, in the East Village, as was his custom, apparently. Sadly, the place has since closed. Opened in 1904. Closed in 2014. Killed by everything wrong with NYC.
  11:06am lucyinbrooklyn:

So good to get home in time for some doug time in sunny, warm Brooklyn!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Andrew Waterloo:

I'm getting serious contact munchies from all this slow wooshy dub.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am Doug Schulkind:

Yay! lucyinbrooklyn is here!
  11:07am Dean:

"Zooid" is an actual word in the English language. Per OED (pron. OH-EEE-DEE) it is pronounced /ˈzəʊɔɪd/, ZOH-oyd. It means "Something that resembles an animal (but is not one in the strict or full sense)...spec. (and most usually) Each of the distinct beings or ‘persons’ which make up a compound or ‘colonial’ animal organism, and often have different forms and functions, thus more or less corresponding to the various organs in the higher animals."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am Jeff Golick:

Not Milt Pappas, @Doug. No timeliness; was just talking to a colleague here at work (who has been here since 1968) who wrote a sports trivia book back in the day. The two pitchers were actually banned from baseball, is the thing.

@Andrew Waterloo: my mouth is also suspiciousy dry.
  11:09am Dean:

Threadgill was here at Berkeley when I was a student. I heard not him in performance but the group of music students he conducted.

Who knew the Carribean had such royalty dwelling within it? (Why, Doug, of course!)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:09am listener james from westwood:

@Doug, I'm tucking "zooid" away for Scrabble night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Doug Schulkind:

Next week, Dukes. Week after, Earls, Listener James!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Stanley:

Avatar 11:11am still b/p:

While driving a little while ago, I head a track on local radio that was James Brown or someone sounding like him, and one of the lines repeated over the funk beat sounded like, "Go to the TED Talk!" And I thought that would actually be a fine funny funk number.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Doug Schulkind:

A zooid or zoöid /ˈzoʊ.ɔɪd/ is a single animal that is part of a colonial animal. Zooids are multicellular; their structure is similar to that of other solitary animals.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Jeff Golick:

@Dean: I'm pretty certain Threadgill was well aware of the OED version of the word. But he insisted on calling his Septet a Sextett, so he hasn't always been one to hew to standard definitions, spellings, what-have-you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Doug Schulkind:

Last set of the show begins in about 9 minutes. So go make that sandwich NOW!
  11:13am Listener Gregory:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am coelacanth:

i'm on it. my prospects for hearing 'till noon are good now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Doug Schulkind:

@Stanley
Loosen your belt and tighten your resolve.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am melinda:

@Stanley: that sounds like you emptied into the teacup. haha
  11:16am Dean:

@Jeff G.: Well, sure, and the "zoo" part, however one pronounces it, means "zoo" one way or the other.

Can't discuss TED talks without my wireless headset microphone! That would be sacrilegious!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Doug Schulkind:

@mauri
"no ice on lake" sounds like the beginning of a poem.
Avatar 11:20am still b/p:

"Crypto-fascist mind rot" is better for conga-line beat than funk beat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am coelacanth:

i dunno, Doug. you've psyched everyone up for the last set; and now you have to out-do your present set.
good luck.
