they seem to be, annie but i'm not experienced enough to say for sure. i've used it a half-dozen times or so but only once for over an hour.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Doug Schulkind:

Back in the mid-1990s, I produced the WFMU live music compilation They Came, They Played, They Blocked the Driveway. It was offered as the big WFMU premium for the 1995 or 1996 marathon. Universal Congress was the first band that gave me permission to include this track on the comp. Thank you, Universal Congress Of!
Avatar 10:41am Michael:

Melinda: As Doug said and also. There is a nice doc on Russell called Wild Combination. Which led me to the Russell comp The World of Arthur Russell and then much deeper. Pretty interesting fella.
Avatar 10:42am Michael:

I think I have that comp Doug. Were there others as well with that name?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Doug Schulkind:

Not sure, Michael. That's the only one with that name that Audika has released.
Avatar 10:44am Michael:

No I meant the 'FMU one you produced!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Jeff Golick:

There was Live Music from a Dead Campus, and its follow up, @Michael.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Doug Schulkind:

Ah so, Michael! No, that was the only comp with that title. There have been 3-4 other live-music collections. Jeff Golick named one, in the above comment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Jeff Golick:

Do people like Linda Perhacs here? She's currently doing a Kickstarter thing for her new album, just fyi: www.kickstarter.com... Just an FYI.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:50am listener james from westwood:

@Jeff, Perhacs and esp. "Parallelograms" are one of the bigger all-over-the-schedule WFMU hits, so I'd say it's a good match!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am coelacanth:

see, i thought he/she/it was "skipping"...but i guess skipping is sort of dancing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am melinda:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am melinda:

Great Onyeabor. I first learned of him last year I think when the box set of his music was a marathon prize. As with Arthur Russell I haven't followed up and investigated further, but WFMU delivers anyway.

Stick with us Kid. We'll get to it eventually!

doctorjazz is making his rounds!
Avatar 11:20am Flash Strap:

i can see why! this track is aflame
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am melinda:

In case my comment was ambiguous what I meant was that music one likes on WFMU often shows up again in later shows so there is a chance to hear it again even if you don't go out and buy the music. I didn't actually win the Onyeabor prize.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Doug Schulkind:

@melinda
I understood! I just meant that WFMU is ready to scratch all musical itches. There are just so MANY itches.

Welcome aboard, Carmichael! And Ike!

@Flash Strap
Hard to think of Luaka Bop as being mainstream, but they really overdid with Mr. Onyeabor. Good people involved with the project, but the quest for striking "world music" gold kind of messed things up.

You love this existential stuff, jessie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am Doug Schulkind:

Bobby "Blue" Bland does a killer version of I'm Not Ashamed. Not sure which came first.
Avatar 11:45am Flash Strap:

i completely concur. a good hand overplayed. didn't help that the more we learned about Onyeabor the more it became clear he was sort of not a good guy

this set is INTENSELY good
Avatar 11:45am ndbob:

Kind of agree there Doug
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Doug Schulkind:

Onyeabor made it clear he wanted to be left alone. His wish should have been respected.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Doug Schulkind:

Plus, the fetishization of the "outsider" African artiste was just too fucking much. Strip away all the hype and you end up with some really wonderful music.
Avatar 11:48am annie:

great tunes to walk into the house to, had to check the seedlings and water the spinach. i can hear the music through the open window, though. there's something about music wafting through windows.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Doug Schulkind:

We all gotta water the spinach sometime, annie.

I leave WFMU on when I go for a walk sometimes so it's waiting for me when I come home.
Avatar 11:52am Flash Strap:

completely agree Doug, and its really a relief to see someone else say what I've been thinking. sort of not too proud of my involvement in some of that stuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Stanley:

@Flash Strap - I sorta got that feeling somehow from his recordings. Just a feeling.I @Doug - this is doing it for me gooood.

GIVE THE DRUMMER RADIO PROGRAMMING ALERT...
Better than makin' love for hours and hours, it's Uncle Michael's Hinky Dinky Time! The show begins in just a few minutes. (Of course, what you do while you listen is up to you.) Uncle Michael's listening love pad is over here: wfmu.org...
Avatar 11:55am annie:

right on melinda!!~

We're tourists. The cultural dissonance we bring to the expressions of other world is real. I make no attempt to ignore my own parochialisms and fascinations. Otherness is a hook, as functional as any other. I'm unabashed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Doug Schulkind:

@Flash Strap
No, my friend, you had it completely right. You were just sharing the joy fullstop. All that other stuff was just a wave of noise that submerged you.

If I was her dad, I think I'd better stay the hell out of her way
Avatar 11:58am Jesse K:

I suppor this rebellious act
Avatar 11:58am ndbob:

excellent show Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am Doug Schulkind:

We dads of daughters have all gotta get the hell out of the way. In a good way. Hello AndrewC!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am Stanley:

@Brian - you can buy a fancy car but you can't buy soul.
D'ya hear?
  11:59am Listener Gregory:

I love the guitar intro. Who says you need different notes to be effective?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am Doug Schulkind:

Thanks, ndbob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am holland oats:

A weird twist of economics, how you can't buy soul, but you CAN sell it.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:59am listener james from westwood:

Whoa, much to read upstream in this thread. Always happy for sprightly conversations here. And of course for fine fine music. Thanks, Doug, for bringing both!
Avatar 11:59am Flash Strap:

thanks doug

@UM: I agree generally, but there's always a line. it's often crossed in the marketing department, and it leaves an ultimately impermanent but also indelible stink
  12:00pm Mr C:

Bobby's was first...
Avatar 12:01pm Michael:

Super show Doug - thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm Doug Schulkind:

Thanks, Mr C. I shoulda known.

@holland oats
