ah, that's really great compliment! thank you james. I'm amazed how diverse music had been before the war broke. Somehow it moves me just to know there were people who were interested in many different kinds of music from all the different places, even during wartime and despite of the propaganda telling many of those music came from "enemies".

You mentioned censorship and other pressure during your breaks in that show. That reminded me of what I read along those lines in a college textbook on modern Japanese history I proofread a few years back. It even included a full-page photo from the late 1930s of a Japanese officer talking to two women in Western dress, and according to the caption he was lecturing them over their nonconforming hairstyles. Always men gotta be putting their opinion in!

@james that's interesting. and yah, I red that that's exactly why Noriko Awaya (the singer I played last week) often got into trouble too... she had her hair curled and dressed in western dresses... glad I'm not living in the time in which being normal is already some kind of statement. Although it seems old men still "gotta be putting their opinion in" for women nowadays in Japan still, haha!

Thanks Mayuko. I just looked it up. Asakusa is famous for temples, street food and sumo wrestling. I am so excited to be going to Japan. I'm going to a wedding in Osaka and, will also be visiting Kyoto. I have five days planned in Tokyo, which sounds like nowhere on earth like it. Will let you know where I decide to base myself.

Stanley, if you ever go to Asakusa... and if you're a coffee drinker,,, there's a coffee place that's the best. I used to go there literally every week. www.tripadvisor.com... one of few things I missed about Japan.

Mayuko: I've been tuning in for a while now, quickly becoming my fav FMU/GTDR show :)

I was there for 3 weeks late last year (Tokyo, Sapporo, Toyama, and Kyoto). Quitting coffee is a fool's errand, don't recommend doing so unless you have to ;p

Hoping to visit Japan again in September, will have to make up for it next time around :)

Ok, gotta leave. Mayuko, when I was in an US Armed Forces Public school on base in Japan, probably 60% of the kids were Asian, (or half Asian), mostly Filipino and Japanese. It wasn't until Junior High that social hierarchies developed, and even so, there were no racial boundaries there in the so-called "cliques". Once I got back to the States, puberty finally happened (I was a late bloomer), and I went to a high school w/ no social hierarchy, mainly b/c it was so large.

And yes, last year I was also there august/september. Rather humid in the south (sapporo was lovely though). But the undesirable weather means that flights are cheaper :D

Thanks again Mayuko, that was a really fun show. I'm not sure the track from Madagascar used it, but there's a common instrument there that's a bamboo tube with strings running lengthwise around it. The first interesting thing to me about it is there are very close instruments in Indonesia and Timor. Another is that many use bike brake cables for strings, and I heard a funny discussion between players on whether front or back wheel cables were better. I think it was a joke, but you never know with musicians or more generally artists
