My very very first is hearing Hard Day's Night on the transistor radio in the kitchen with my mom. Second is my 2nd grade teacher playing Hey Jude in class. Third is some guy in King City taking me over to his house and his brother showing me the cover of Abbey Road, pointing to Paul, and saying, "These guys are great, but this guy, he just died."

Hi Gary (sorry been gone so long!) - The Beatles are there, on the stereo, in my earliest memories, in song books my mom and dad would read from at the plastic organ in the living room. in the album covers that were windows onto a colorful world full of love and fun and creativity. I remember seeing the Yellow Submarine movie when it was new. I must have been 4 years old. But they were already old friends by then!
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 7:27pm

- yeah! - picking out 'If I Fell' on the plastic organ - a good one for that...

Tim!!!! Those are terrific, vivid memories ... I have one of finding the Yellow Submarine book at my cousin Rebecca's house and being completely entranced by it ...
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 7:30pm

...& later - 'covering' 'Yesterday' from gittar cheatbooks & singing it - & Mom listening stealthily from the doorway - & then being embarrassed to have Mommy digging such a sweet tune - & throwing the songbook @ her...heh...

My dad was in a Beatles cover band when he was in college in the 60's (probably MANY existed in Japan back in those days) and I just suddenly remembered now about his old guitar scores of Beatles songs. Hey Gary. Quite different takes on the Beatles as I remember them. They were my favorite at that time. I could not believe that I was finally hearing a wonderful change in music...The music of the 50's and 60's was so bad, IMO, that I stopped listening to it until one day at your Aunt Arden's I was fortunate to hear the Beatles for the first time....I fell in love with their music!

@coelecanth & @ike hmmm, i do not know the "naked" beatles version. may need to seek out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm
Gary:

Ryan, I think you'd love Boris!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm
coelacanth:

...and i always despised "long and winding road". the naked version is a different vocal take. it actually sounds like he means it!
...+ no lukewarm mush on top.

Jeff Golick:

I have enjoyed the Let It Be...Naked CD, too. Feels fresh again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16pm
Gary:

Ah, man -- I've never even heard of this naked Let It Be!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm
coelacanth:

i wish there were an "all things must pass...naked" album!

Dean:

@hyde: I agree, particularly so with respect to Let It Be, which was such a peculiar conclusion to the group's career. I think what grabbed me then about those tunes was their distance (aptly) from The Beatles I knew from childhood. ATU and LAWR are light-years removed from "I Want to Hold Your Hand" or "Rocky Racoon." I don't know the naked versions, but I suspect I would miss the "lukewarm mush" coelacanth mentions. Sgt. Peppers was, of a course, a masterpiece of production, over-, under-, sideways, and down. But I enjoy the tepid "easy listening" vibe to those tunes on Let It Be as a nice contrast to, say, "One After 909" or "Get Back."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm
coelacanth:

(not that i don't absolutely Love it as it is.)
  9:20pm
Dean:

As I mentioned above, though, I largely favor the bootlegs, which can be as bare-assed naked as you can get.
Avatar 9:23pm
hyde:

@dean hehe, it all may just simply be a taste thing also. i love "one after 909" and get back"!
  9:24pm
Dean:

@hyde: Agreed, again! I hope I didn't imply by emphasizing the contrast that I didn't love them!
Avatar 9:27pm
hyde:

@Dean heh, not at all. (plus, i can always hack people hating music that i love. it'd get awful boring if we all liked the same stuff).

@Mayuko that can't be your favorite Beatles song, that's *my* favorite Beatles song! ;) (tho i'll settle for I'm Only Sleeping, if it's a real issue)

Ryan J:

Some of these put a big smile on my face and I'm not sure if it is because I like it or because it is tickling a funny bone but it is awesome. It does really make one ponder cultural influence on popular music. I think it is most amusing since the original melodies are so well ingrained!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm
Gary:

What's amazing to me, Ryan, is how everything is so recognizable, no matter how mangled or reworked
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm
coelacanth:

i cannot have a favorite.
maybe i could narrow it down to 5-10.

I should google before I speak, apparently some people did cover that song.... two votes for She Said She Said! haha.

Gary, having scrolled up inadvertently to your question...my oldest beatle memory is also my oldest r&r memory. i went from the mary poppins st & a danny kaye children's record to Meet the Beatles and i clearly recall the overwhelming joy i felt when i learned that such a thing exists. i took it apart in my head and it turned my world upside-down.

My oldest Beatle memory was when I got a new lime scented marker for my fifth bday, and and I colored in "Beatles" on the White Album and my father got home, saw me doing it, and slapped the hell out of me. My mom scolded him, and he apologized to me. 10 years later, I totally understood.

Finally got around to listening to this show. Great stuff, good work Gary. A while back I went looking for covers of Brian Eno songs on YouTube, and that was quite rewarding also.
