Xavier Cougat loved having his hair done. I know, because I played 2nd bone for him in his orchestra for a brief time in '59. We actually lost several gigs because X (as we called him) would be backstage berating his hairdresser (Alfonse) because he thought his bangs were too short, or his Dippity-Do wasn't the mentholated kind. Alfonse did his best to please X, but it never seemed to work. I remember we did Jack Parr one night and X did the show in curlers with enough Dippity-Do involved that his head started to smoke from the intense television lighting. A stage hand actually sprayed X with a fire extinguisher as a precautionary measure and the crowd ate it up! After that incident, X repeated the stunt many times until his doctor told him that the fire retardant chemicals were causing him to go prematurely bald. This was around the time he started seeing Charro, and he wanted to look his best. Interestingly, a young Arthur Brown (who was traveling with us as a euphonist) appeared years later with his "Crazy World" band, sporting some flaming headgear which must have been inspired by Xavier Cougat. It's all connected, Scott. All of it. Rock n roll, big bands, hippity-hop. All of it.

I recall a short stint playing saxophone for Donna Reed in the early 60's. It was the only time I played sax in a band. The reason for this is that Donna only had reed instruments in the band. It was a gimmick. Sixteen saxophones (including one played by a young William Clinton!), four oboes, three clarinets, and one english horn. While Donna was loved, the band was not, nor was the spin-off LP, Learning To Reed. We had fun, though. Donna was a good sport. I'll never forget the night she released a live muskrat in Toots Theilman's motel room.

Y3K. Ironic. That was a planned-but-abandoned triple album set from the Stan Kenton Band. Aborted when Kenton realized he only had an EP's worth of material as the recording dates drew near. At the time, Capitol Records execs asked him point blank, "why three, K?" Those close to him called him, K. I never got any closer than Mr. Kenton, and I whispered it to avoid his chronic wrath. OK, that's it for me. Pledge for Scott. He's young, he's hungry. He's on the way up. This Sheila is good, too. She reminds me a lot of Pat Suzuki. The voice,

I spoke with Kenneth about that, Carmichael (I believe I will call you Hoagie from now on). Kenneth felt that while big band music is quite possibly the greatest music there is, that today's young listeners are more enamored with popular acts like Bruno Kirby (Derwood's great-nephew) and The Arctic Monkees. The names of all these combos are difficult for me to keep track of. I do enjoy Joshua Groban.

Harry Dean. Ha! Funny you mention him. He emptied spit valves for us in the late 50's. This was when I was with Del Torme, Mel's half-brother. Del had a nice 22-piece orchestra, bus, connections, etc. Just one problem. He could not sing his way out of a wet paper bag. In fact, one night as a gimmick, we put him in a large wet paper bag onstage and he acted as though he could not sing his way out of it. He had a GREAT sense of humor. As far as Harry Dean, no one empties spit valves for very long without either changing jobs or moving up the ladder. Harry wet Del's bag for a while, but that gimmick wore off. One day he was just gone. They come and they go in jazz. They come and they go.
