I am not sure how I'm doing, exactly. I have been caring for/worrying about my dad 24/7. Head is spinning of its axis. This radio show will be my sanctuary.

Good Morning Mr. Drummer and fellow followers of the Drummer!
  9:11am Paul:

Sorry for your loss Doug. Dementia is a cruel way to finish a long life. It has hit both my mother and mother-in-law. May the music help see you through!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am Mike East:

That's rough, Doug. My mother isn't to the point of having to be reminded of my father's passing, but I'm sure she privately forgets and then remembers. Assisted living is a current family debate. Right now, two of my sister's are shouldering the majority of the burden. Such a complex issue, emotionally, financially, etc.
Thanks for sharing your story...it helps to hear.
  9:14am Mr C:

Doug and the Drummer are the driving wheel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Doug Schulkind:

Goodmorning, thedunkel!

@Mike East
I have some experience having a loved one with dementia. My mother-in-law for the last decade of her life was in a fog. But it was a gentle fog. And she wasn't my mother. My dad's dementia careens from peaceful to terribly fearful. He is often quite aware of his memory loss, and it is so cruel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Doug Schulkind:

@Mr C
I am in the back seat smoking a doobie with the goth kids.
  9:19am Nine in PGH:

9 here, Re entering the sanctuary. Here's to the woman who brought into the world the music man we rely on. All here are with you Doug as much as you are with us.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Mike East:

Cruel is the right word. My mother's not even 70 and already showing signs. We have a long way to go, and it will not get better/easier, I'm sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Parq:

I have arriveded. Just coffee for now, but don't put that whiskey where you won't be able to find it. Doug, what I've said.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:20am doctorjazz:

My mom passed 2 years ago with after a long bout with dementia. In some (like my mom), it does make them into a version of themselves, not the version you grew up with, often an unpleasant version, and it can be quite difficult to manage. Takes a toll on the family as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Doug Schulkind:

Glad you're here, Nine in PGH! And Parq, there's always a comfy cushion for you in the front row.

It really helps me to hear of everyone's experiences with death and life. It is so easy to just burrow deep into the solitary sadness. I appreciate the rope ladder, everyone.
  9:24am Mr C:

Well if that's the case, we'll hand the wheel to Junior Parker
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Doug Schulkind:

Just don't hand the wheel to Jesse Belvin.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Maggie B.:

in a perverse way, i feel fortunate to not have had either of my parents go through such a rough decline. each one went unexpectedly. (especially my father). i can only imagine the stress and heartache you guys went/are going through.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am Doug Schulkind:

There is no better or worse "way" I am quite sure. At least I still get to tell my dad I love him about 450 times a day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Mike East:

@Doug - that just made me lol. Humor definitely helps. Music, too. Thanks for both.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Parq:

Not being able to focus on recent grief or loss, this I get. Three weeks after my mother died, my dad needed emergency surgery and was in the hospital for a week, with some home care needed after that. I'm assuming I breathed sometime during that period, but no clear memory remains.

Did you know Frank Gossner had a show on WFMU for one summer?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
a) You know what to do
b) Geri Allen is now the director of the University of Pittsburgh's jazz studies department (not sure of her actual title). She took over for Nathan Davis when he retired a couple of years back.
