It's harder to do a good pastiche or parody or other allusive work than it is to make something from whole cloth. It's in no sense a rip-off.

My favorite example was my friend's TV show "Lost". I keep discovering more allusions in it, and appreciate the difficulty of working many of them in. I sometimes crack up when I get one of the references.
