Matt from Springfield:

@Jake: I've known many people over the years who can wear hysterically light clothing in cold weather.

Once on a ski trip, one such friend when downhill skiing the last day wearing shorts and his trench coat, open. While another guy got frostbite on his hand because his expensive Gore-Tex glove was wet. Boggles the mind..
  12:44am
Cliff:

I'm already going stir-crazy from being trapped inside all weekend. Hopefully my new cable modem arrives today, then I'll try to brave the outdoors to go the cable company to return my box and old modem. I'm not saving much money by cutting the cord on basic cable (they said they don't have any "packages" they could offer me that would save me money on internet access only, bleh), but at least I'll be able to save the monthly $10 modem rental fee.

sugarwolf: I used to know a guy in college who was from Florida, he wore shorts year-round, even if it was below 0, and only bothered to wear sneakers instead of sandals when there was more than a dusting of snow on the ground.
Avatar 12:46am
Alejandroool:

sugarwolf - someone told me yesterday someone went on the streetcar with a SLEEVELESS shirt yesterday. I don't get it..(windchill -8F)
  12:46am
JakeGould:

@MattfromSpringfield: Fair enough. But in NYC there is this stupid men’s clothing trend of high-water-ish pants with boatshoes and no socks. And people are just wearing it all the time. It’s like that Simpson’s episode where Marge wore that Chanel Jackie-O outfit all of the time. Enough people!
  12:46am
Cliff:

And I had a college friend who knew this guy from Alaska who also wore shorts year-round, and would scoff at anyone who ever complained about the weather in Upstate NY.

Wild Nothing is really something
Avatar 12:48am

@Jake: Those damn hipsters fault! Sloppy clothing is becoming more rampant in general, but those boatshoes in winter?! I'd spray them with a hose, if the water wasn't already frozen!!

  12:59am

sugarwolf, everyone here in Syracuse dresses like you outside with lots of layers on, and none of this boatshoes-with-no-socks nonsense. I guess that makes us practical but not fashionable.
Avatar 1:00am
BadGuyZero:

New York City's alright if you like boat shoes.
  1:01am
JakeGould:

@BadGuyZero: Wonder when one of these links will ask where my pledge pin is on my uniform.
Avatar 1:03am
Matt from Springfield:

A Ppppledge Ppin!!?!

Say, we're about a month away from Pledge Time ourselves, aren't we!
  1:04am
Cliff:

According to Wikipedia, "It's important to note that boat shoes do not last as regular shoes will, as they are designed to grip deck, and are thus soft and pliable. Using boat shoes on rough, graveled surfaces will wear them out at a very accelerated speed."

So I guess it's a form of conspicuous consumption where the wearer is signaling that they can walk all around NYC and still afford to buy a new pair of boat shoes whenever the F they want to.
Avatar 1:06am
Matt from Springfield:

GOAT-BOY! >:)

And for the record, I don't believe "GoatBoy" was ever "popular" on SNL, most thought that bit was gross and/or weird. Though I was a rare fan. (Note: I'm also a fan of Brian Fellows, Mr. Peepers, Dog Show, and other super strange classics from that period of SNL).
  1:07am
Cliff:

And now that I think about it, I think I did once observe a few hipster guys wearing boat shoes with no socks while in a coffee shop. But this was during the summer, the one season of the year here where there is no threat of getting frostbite.
  1:09am

I used to live in this one part of Brooklyn that has psychotically been gentrified. The one year that was a turning point was when I saw dude-bro finance guys in shorts and flip flops at 3:00am yelling at the deli guy to make them burgers. Nuts.

I used to think Paul Stanley sang "I like candy corn and she's got cancer" in KISS's "C'mon And Love Me." I thought about how sad it was that the girl had cancer but that it was nice that he had his sugar addiction to help him cope with the situation. Eventually I figured out that he was singing "I'm a capricorn and she's a cancer."
