Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm Greg from ZONE 5:

Can't hear this without thinking of Rex's station ID…
Avatar 12:06pm Adam from Philly:

This set is better than the entire Superbowl last night. Killin' it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm Parq:

That's it! Thanks, Greg.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm doctorjazz:

This is GREAT!
  12:07pm Listener Robert:

True, Greg. Until yesterday I'd forgotten that he uses that fragment, which IIRC was not among the selections on the last Morricone Is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Greg from ZONE 5:

@Parq: Devin played it on Thursday and it was driving me NUTS. "Where the hell do I know this from?!"
  12:07pm Listener Robert:

I meant until Sat. Oh, well, weekend kind of blurs into 1 day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm drr:

I'm thinking, "This sounds a lot like the music that plays during the NFL audio-only feed during the commercial breaks..."
  12:07pm Cliff:

LOL Greg, I was wondering where the hell I'd heard this before
  12:09pm Cliff:

And jeez, ANOTHER great musician died recently?!
Avatar 12:09pm Claw!:

yooooooooo

nice selections. Mr. B
  12:09pm Listener Robert:

"The Lineman" also got used as the music in the Simpson cartoon montage of Mrs. Simpson's Mafia-controlled pretzel biz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm Parq:

I didn't know Spence had just died. What a time for him to go, one day before SB50.
  12:10pm Cliff:

Maybe they're planning an amazing all-star festival up in heaven
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm Parq:

Cliff, yeah, with Alan Rickman as emcee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm Mick:

Whoa, great set to start things off! Hail and Farewell Sam Spence.
  12:12pm Agent Peter:

Could listen to this all day, every day!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 12:12pm Ken From Hyde Park:

More football music by Sam Spence (RIP) and others on Devon E. Levins' recent show: www.wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- very Kewl - SpaghettiWestern-esque work.
  12:13pm Cliff:

Yep, I really liked that show Ken From Hyde Park
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm Parq:

That was a terrific set, Joe, and I think the "Rock Music Reports" people would agree that youth should be encouraged toward healthy interests like football.
Avatar 12:14pm Carmichael:

"On the frozen tundra of Lambeau field, tw sets of men faced one another in an epic battle to decide the fate of all makind. They were behemoths, and they were in a mood to tangle."
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Hoboken Jack:

Am surprised Mr. Spence was on the Tommy Boy label!
  12:16pm Listener Robert:

A few weeks ago one of the DJs here played "Drunken Sailor", and whenever I think of that song I think of the rubato-ed NFL Films version, of which I don't know whether it's by Spence.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Soundtrack Artists aren't afraid of large palettes & open up sound for everyone.
  12:19pm Cliff:

I need to fill up my iPod with Sam Spence, then he can be the soundtrack for my life
Avatar 12:19pm Todd-o-phonic:

I wanted to throw a challenge flag on the halftime show last night. That was even worse than the miserable game itself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm Dominick:

this is a treat!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm coelacanth:

rest in peace Sam Spence
rest in peace Dan Hicks.
  12:23pm AJ:

Hey Joe! Great tribute set! Also excellent piece for the NY Daily News.
Cheers bud
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm coelacanth:

  12:24pm Hackensack Slim:

  12:25pm Cliff:

Avatar 12:31pm Claw!:

Oi, Fish!
  12:42pm johnk77:

RIP Dan Hicks;<
he was a fixture and local legend
at the Old Mil Tavern
Mill Valley, Marin county, CA
afternoons and evenings
in the mid-seventies
we were setting up sound for
Rowdy & the Rivets
just starting out in
the entertainment biz
he would sit quietly at the bar
keeping generally to himself
but could be seen smiling
and enjoying the country rock
soundchecks and shows
  12:42pm George Kopp:

Looking forward to Girls on Grass, really likin' the CD from the rent party show, Joe.
  12:45pm AJ:

@Cliff Here ya go. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/sam-spence-greatest-hits-nfl-films-article-1.2523043
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm Nate K.:

  12:48pm Cliff:

Thanks AJ
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm coelacanth:

Hi Bear!!
  12:54pm Cliff:

"Keep Your Stupid Dreams Alive" - good motto for these times
  12:55pm Bill in W.O.:

Great pre-GG set, Joe. Almost didn't want the live set to start, and we were looking forward to hearing it all weekend.
  12:59pm Cliff:

Ah cool, the drummer's a DJ on WFMU
Avatar 1:00pm geezerette:

Sounding very Laurel Canyon!
  1:00pm Cliff:

Er, the bass player I mean
  1:03pm Tommy:

WOW loving the Girls on Grass , thanks for putting it together Joe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Nicely written, sung, played, arranged & broadcast. (Let's face it - anyone can bash Chuck Berry riffs real loud; some taste & ideas & ability can go a real long way...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...&...nice Chuck Berry riff...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm Parq:

A woman on drums -- I *love* bands with women on drums.
Avatar 1:12pm Carmichael:

Dave Mandl! Did not know you rocked!
  1:13pm Cliff:

Enjoying this band, nice set :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm coelacanth:

  1:17pm Cliff:

"Has this been recorded yet?" - "Just now - you did" LOL
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm coelacanth:

if you image search "girls on grass" you don't get pictures of reefer; but you don't get pictures of this band either.
- you get pictures of girls.
-on grass.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm dale:

gowanus canal diary would be a good band name.
  1:21pm Cliff:

Haha coelacanth, it's true
  1:23pm Cliff:

One of them is called "CRAZY GIRL SLEEPING ON GRASS", but she doesn't look crazy to me, just a hippie chick
  1:24pm Cliff:

Though maybe she smoked some grass, then fell asleep...on the grass
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 1:26pm ChrisB.:

Love Regular Einstein!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Mike East:

@RR11/63 - on the lunar new year, no less.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- it's an ♒Aquarius: independent original genius outside the boundaries of the Present.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm doctorjazz:

Still have my vinyl copies of the Television albums in the rack. They were just so different than everyone out at the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm doctorjazz:

Thanks for the link RR3, at work, will get to read it later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

They don't mention the Dead or Quicksilver. 'Marquee Moon' actually reminds me of 'Blonde on Blonde'.
Avatar 2:01pm glenn:

television is the moby grape of punk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Nice one glenn!...Ghosts of San Francisco lately - sadly many passings...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm Nate K.:

Really enjoying the new Freakwater, per usual with them.
Avatar 2:07pm glenn:

every year, thousands of people around the age of 70 die. it just so happens that we're hitting that time when a lot of the folks dying are musicians who are that age.
  2:07pm Mark R.:

Really like this Freakwater album a lot. I've heard quite a few cuts on your show now. Love the harmonies and the fuzzy guitar. And they're just about as country as I can usually stand.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm doctorjazz:

I always thought I heard the Dead in Television myself.
Avatar 👻 2:09pm David Shortell:

January 26 at the Brighton Bar I saw a group called "Animal Masks", who I was told featured Dave DeCastro of the Miracle Three. I remarked on what I thought was his resemblance to Jefferson Airplane's Paul Kantner. Then six days later -- well, you know what happened.
Avatar 2:10pm glenn:

not that i'm trying to be any kind of a downer, but let's keep things in perspective.
Avatar 2:11pm Joe B:

Thanks for tuning in everyone, digging the comments, can't respond to them all, always a little hectic with a live band in the studio; it is appreciated!
  2:12pm Cliff:

Yeah but glenn, most people live into their 80's in the developed world. Though musicians are probably short of the bell curve given their typical lifestyle
  2:12pm Cliff:

And nice show today Joe :)
  2:13pm Mark R.:

Wow, man, the colors are so groovy!
  2:14pm Mark R.:

BTW that NFL music made me feel nine years old in my pajamas on a Saturday morning--NFL films were much better than the actual games could ever be!
  2:17pm John Baumgartner:

Great show, Joe.
Avatar 👻 2:20pm David Shortell:

I recently borrowed that San Francisco Nuggets book set from the Toms River library and thought that Fifty Foot Hose track was the best thing on it. I'd never heard of them before but it appears they put out an LP in 1967. And supposedly when the band broke up, many of them joined the cast of "Hair"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm Parq:

Dang, two weeks in a row I've been out of the room for Freakwater.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm Parq:

But I'm way-digging this Dalton Boys.
Avatar 2:24pm glenn:

i think tom petty's about the only artist i like who's done the super bowl.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm Nate K.:

"When it doubt, go to Charlie Fathers," genuine life advice.
  2:32pm Mark R.:

Tom Petty's still my favorite Super Bowl halftime, too, Glenn.
  2:34pm flashbazbo:

Can someone post the old nfl films on YouTube ? What is this the 20th century?
  2:37pm flashbazbo:

Super Bowl 51 halftime show will have Blohanna and The Greengrocers! I can't wait
  2:39pm Cliff:

Naw, it's the 21st century, where media conglomerates have overreaching copyright control
  2:41pm Cliff:

And armies of copyright bots constantly searching to take down any of their content
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm coelacanth:

Great song Joe!
  2:43pm flashbazbo:

Seriously are those on DVD? I mean the 50s and 60s ones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm coelacanth:

i'm out. Thanks Joe and Thanks girls on grass!
ciao people.
  2:44pm Cliff:

For example: kotaku.com...
Avatar 2:45pm geezerette:

  2:45pm Cliff:

Yes, thanks to Girls on Grass the band, and all other girls on grass too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm coelacanth:

amen Cliff!
Avatar 2:48pm Carmichael:

I was lucky enough to find lots of Swamp Dogg vinyl a few years back, for reasonable prices. I was shopping in Berkeley, maybe that's why.
  2:48pm Cliff:

Heheh
  2:49pm Sissophonic Cheryl:

Once again thanking the People's Champ for a great show!
  2:51pm Bluesman:

Thanks for keeping me entertained today while I'm home with two so-called sick boys.

"Some people drive you crazy like it was their only goddamned job."

Preach, Dan Baird & Homemade Sin!
  2:55pm Cliff:

I quit my job last year because my boss thought it was her job to drive me crazy.
  2:58pm Cliff:

See you next week Joe
