@Irwin-No problem, it was funny!

YES!

Aw, he calls her "Darling."

Polyus:

The schadenfreude is strong with this one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm
Irwin:

Hard to believe Andy is capable of delivering such sensitive lyrics.
  4:09pm
Polyus:

A 60s girl group-style cover that flips the script would be just the thing.
  4:17pm
berbo:

Which ELP album is this? I don't think I've heard it before.
  4:18pm

It's EWP.

Always great to hear The Rainmakers. What great records( and great live also ) Thanks.

Diatribe? Setting work aside and turning up the volume.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm

Say it ain't so, LL!
  4:34pm
Laura L:

I'm Calypdeficient, it's not my fault!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm
rrg:

Maybe you can ease it into via Belafonte.
  4:35pm
Dean:

If I was president, nobody would ever have to use the subjunctive mood.

Mighty Sparrow wrote this tune.

Laura L:

I like Harry B. fine! He's a-ok. Have met him a bunch of times through a coincidental connection--he's a prince of a man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm
Irwin:

Belafonte is NOT a calypsonian. The genuine calypsonians make fun of him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm
Irwin:

Here you get more.

Suddenly my arthritis has gone away, and I no longer have pelagra. Thanks IrwinCare!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm

CALYPSO - the magical curative.
Avatar 4:42pm

Lovin the calypsoian sounds! also, Rooster Was a Witness is an amazing title for a tune

pel·la·gra
pəˈlaɡrə,-ˈlāɡrə,-ˈläɡrə/
noun
noun: pellagra

a deficiency disease caused by a lack of nicotinic acid or its precursor tryptophan in the diet. It is characterized by dermatitis, diarrhea, and mental disturbance, and is often linked to overdependence on corn as a staple food.
Avatar 4:43pm
TDK60:

Harry's 'Ballads, Blues and Boasters' is one of my fave LPs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm
Parq:

Just in case anyone else was wondering.
  4:44pm
Laura L:

Well, I don't turn it off--for godsake it's not free jazz--but I just don't have the Calypthing. Like I said, it's not my fault--I was born that way!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm
Irwin:

You guys lay off Laura. She has some redeeming characteristics and has contributed modestly to society. Plus she's not a chronic depressive so she doesn't need the calypso tonic.
  4:45pm
Dean:

How about Tripoli Steel Band? They dip into calypso now and then. Visiting my mother over the weekend I found two autographed LPs by same. Love the fact that one iteration of the band is named after an oil company.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm
rrg:

There's a pretty-good album by the "Esso Trinidad Steel Band" that I have. Is that the one?
  4:49pm
Laura L:

Nah, no chronic depressive, don't need no tonic. Irwin, you can add Calypso Care Provider to your resume--you have cured berbo of the pellagra!
  4:50pm
Cliff:

Yay, it's Lush!
  4:51pm
Dean:

Yep, that's one of the them, but they also go by Tripoli Steel Band. I remember hearing them live at a shopping mall in Southern California when I was maybe eight years old.

Avatar 5:06pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...just missed '500' ! - (sincerely) a favorite; freakin' ladyband's lovesong to a gawdam car on an album generally brutally dismissive of males...
Avatar 5:10pm
Carmichael:

I'm reading the Bert Berns bio right now, so it's Afro-Cuban for me. But I still love the Mighty Sparrow.

And I missed one of the few Hatfield & the North plays on FMU! Archives later ...

Irwin, Do you know the Calypso singer in the 1943 film, "I Walked With A Zombie"? He was good!
Avatar 5:18pm

sweet music! thank you Irwin!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm
Irwin:

Wilbur: Haven't seen the film.
  5:18pm
Laura L:

Beautiful work from David Garland--thanks for playing that... and the calypso, sure why not. Will David be releasing that sometime in 2016?
Avatar 5:18pm
Linda Lee:

@Laura L ~ i sure do hope so. tonic for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm
Irwin:

Don't know if David has a label or intends to self-release.
  5:19pm
jan:

Loving that David Garland composition.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm
rrg:

Internet research suggests that the calypso singer in "I Walked with a Zombie" was Sir Lancelot.
Avatar 5:21pm
TDK60:

Garland is no longer D.J.ing at the NYC classical station WQXR.
  5:22pm
Laura L:

It's so perfectly David Garland. Yes, my kind of tonic too, Linda L., I would sure buy a copy of that!
  5:22pm

Any discussion of David Garland doing a regular program on WFMU?

David lives two or three hours north of JC.
  5:26pm
wilbur twinhorse:

ok then, thanks rrg, the web is amazing...and scary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm
rrg:

Hey, if Narduar can do a WFMU show remotely (as he did for years), then so could DG. Just sayin'.
  5:27pm
Listening Out There:

...but FMU/Drummer has a number of remote hosts, right? Vicki Bennett, Charlie...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm
rrg:

That's right, LOT. In fact I'm led to believe that most of what's on the Drummer stream is done remotely.
Avatar 5:29pm
Carmichael:

ALL of the DrumSum folks are remote, with perhaps AmNazz being the exception. Kind of the purpose, I think.
  5:29pm
Listening Out There:

Well, then...Give the Garland Some.
Avatar 5:31pm

Thanks for the Cachao, Irwin!

I never would have put Mighty Sparrow and Van Dykes Park together. Go figure...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm

Speaking of Van Dyke Parks, he also produced that previously-mentioned album by the Esso Trinidad Steel Band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm

A versatile chap.
  5:38pm

RRG: Thx + I did not know that. Will have to look at my version in glorious MP3 + .jpg format...
  5:41pm

I think my pelagra is coming back.
  5:42pm

RRG: Dang. You be right. Van Dyke and (Dottie?) Parks. Right thar, in that low res .jpg. I can't make out that second name...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm
Irwin:

VDP is a yuge calypso fan. Check out the calypso on "Discover America."
  5:43pm
Dean:

VDP produced that Esso album?! Wow, I didn't notice that. Will check again when I'm next in my mother's neck of the woods.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm
rrg:

Durrie Parks, says discogs.com.
  5:44pm

Good to know. My VDP knowledge is mainly around stuff he did with Brian Wilson.

VDP was interviewed ON THIS PROGRAM about Mighty Sparrow when I was hosting Muriel's Treasure in '06-'07.
