Tony Coulter:

Hello all. Won't be doing a David Bowie tribute today, as so many FMU DJs have already beaten me to it, and done it more than admirably. However, Mr. Jones is in my thoughts and his music will be in many of my shows to come.

Children Medieval Band (on now and in the pic above the playlist) are a Romanian-American trio aged 9, 12, and 13.

glenn:

gaaaahhhhh. they look like young republicans. or the children of the corn.
  12:03pm
Dean:

These kids are respecting authentic early music performance practices. Silvertone guitars were widely used by the troubadours.

listener james from westwood:

Howdy, Tony and all! Sometimes it's good to take a break from such immersion, as excellent as the music may be. Needed to do that with Lou Reed in '13.

Tony Coulter:

Greetings, V Priceless, Holland Oats, Glenn, Dean, and Listener James!

I probably will do a Bowie tribute at some point -- just not yet. His death was most def a shock.

i had a silvertone, like this, except in blonde finish. www.scottysvintageguitars.com...
it was a great guitar, and i wish i still had it.
Avatar 12:09pm
Cecile:

Well, I have to say that Joe Belock's passion and heavy sampling of Scary Monsters got me to actually download it. And I forgot how much I liked the songs I liked on it, if that makes any sense.
Avatar 12:10pm
Tony Coulter:

The 9-year-old in CMB is the drummer, by the way.

Coulda sworn it was Purdie.
Avatar 12:11pm
Cecile:

I have a question. What is the more psychedelic and trippy music made by stone cold sober people?
Avatar 12:11pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Cecile: I keep on discovering new Bowie albums to like. I started with Low and kept on expanding from there.
  12:12pm
Dean:

Hot damn, Angel! One of the two loudest concerts ever!
Avatar 12:13pm
Cecile:

I think as he got older, the swirls of hate tons of US rock critics, writers and fans had generated in the 70s and 80s started to thin. And we got a better picture. I'm not going to say I'm a die-hard fan, but he has recorded a surprising number of songs I love.

June 29, 1976, I believe. Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. Substantial hearing loss, I suspect.
Avatar 12:16pm

this is quite lovely and not at all what I thought of Angel.
Avatar 12:16pm
V Priceless:

Angel = real Mellotron, that's for sure
Avatar 12:16pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Cecile: RE: psychedelic music made by sober people -- not sure, but there's plenty of "freaky" music made by non-stoners, from Beefheart to Sun Ra. Does that count?
Avatar 12:17pm
V Priceless:

Melvins are sober and they make some trippy stuff : )

@ Cecile: This is their debut album, containing their own tunes. The youtube stuff is all covers, and some of it is from as long ago as four years -- when the drummer was five!

I kept hoping to hear the harp bridge.
Avatar 12:23pm
Cecile:

ok, I'll listen harder.
Avatar 12:28pm
V Priceless:

@ Cecile - reminds me of a silly piece of fan mail I wrote to Pere Ubu when "The Modern Dance" came out; I was curious to know if any of the music was the result of altered states of mind. DT wrote back with a definitive "no", and stated, in fact, that he had come to enjoy their music more since he stopped doing them! Ha!

MrFab:

hey y'all!
Is it wrong to be mad at Bowie for not telling us he had cancer? What was he thinking? The news was like a sock in the gut.
Avatar 1:38pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, Matt! Leonard Cohen certainly can get awfully dark -- industrial-music-level dark.
Avatar 1:40pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, MrFab. I kinda know what you're saying. On the other hand, I guess he didn't want to spend his remaining time with everyone focusing on his dying. I can understand and respect that.

Imagine you're Bowie - terminally ill. Would you tell the world you're dying, & put up w/ all that?
Release your work about it, & amuse yourself w/ the reviews instead - fantastic.

I think Bowie did the most Bowie thing with something as mundane to work with as death
Avatar 2:06pm

Bowie's come as close as any public figure in recorded history to pulling a genuine Lazarus, seems to me. To have that much control right up to the end? Beyond impressive.
