Sitar covers of musical hits are a few of my favorite things!
Avatar 9:35am ndbob:

you should see Wild in the Streets Doug - as I recall that scene takes places when the Senate is secretly given water with lsd in it
Avatar 9:37am annie:

any chance i can wine, i do; whining is limited to serious issues like NO wine. WitStreets was a classic movie ndbob.! today may be an all-day movie feast.. with wine.

Good morning and Happy New Year to you, dear Doug! Much love from Brooklyn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am melinda:

Sinner: The Tide rolled! the Spartans fold. Impressive.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Doug Schulkind:

Sometimes quiet happens. It's part of life.
  10:31am sinner:

I've been liking them all. That Ghetto Vibes LP is amazing. The Tierra Caliente, haunting and gorgeous.

In honor of Mr. C: "...anyone got a halftime Philly score?...."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am Uncle Michael:

I'm Philly-born but not Philly-raised.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Gary:

I love this Yoshio Hayakawa track, but my can ran under the bed when it started and won't come out, not even to play with the toy-on-string he loves.
  10:37am mr c:

Jimmy Ruffin: "I've passed this way before, and I'll pass this way again..."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Uncle Michael:

Cool...I'm going back to bed. Thanks Doug.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:41am Brian in UK:

Waving not drowning.

Hey Doug, you down with da homies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Doug Schulkind:

Here, kitty kitty...

OK, this is interesting. Brian in UK writes "da homies" at the exact moment that I am playing a track from the West African nation of Benin. The name of the ancient kingdom from the region that became Benin?

It was called Dahomey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Doug Schulkind:

That just made my year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Doug Schulkind:

[Last time I played this Franz Koglmann track, Uncle Michael emailed my privately saying there was a problem with the stream. Let's see if it happens again!]
Avatar 10:48am hyde:

i love this Koglmann track
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Doug Schulkind:

So lovable!
  10:50am sinner:

There should never be a problem with the stream. To quote MLK, quoting the Old Testament prophet, Amos: Amos 5:24 New American Standard Bible (NASB)
“But let justice roll down like waters
And righteousness like an ever-flowing stream."
  10:52am mr c:

Amen
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Stanley:

Hallelujah, brother sinner
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Doug Schulkind:

I paraphrased MLK for the title of this 2007 GTDS show: wfmu.org...
Avatar 10:56am glenn:

and then andy smote amos with the fury of a thousand storms, and said "now, a word from our sponsor".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am Gary:

Wow, wait -- that was Borges' voice?
Avatar 🥁 10:57am duke:

I just finished re-reading Borges' Collected Fictions. I wish I understood Spanish enough to get what is being said in El Tango
  10:59am Dean:

2016 is getting off to a bad start. I slept in. Didn't catch the obscure Koglmann.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Doug Schulkind:

Favorite live show of 2015: Yo La Tengo!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:00am Brian in UK:

"All is vanity" said the Preacher. (aka the son of David)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am Doug Schulkind:

@Dean
I'll email you the Koglmann after the show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am Doug Schulkind:

@Dean
Actually, I just sent it!
  11:04am sinner:

....Paquin, pull down....(and I forgot to add that D.S's GtDS is a righteous stream).
  11:04am mr c:

I don't think I've heard this B record. It doesn't quite fit his style...
  11:05am Dean:

Got it! Thanks, Doug. This is the BEST 2016 ever!
  11:09am Dean:

Mid-2015
  11:10am Dean:

Ornette, I mean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Doug Schulkind:

@sinner
The stream is lefteous.
Avatar 11:11am hyde:

those Yusef Lateef tributes was fantastic and amazing. i'm a fan of memorials, myself. the kcr days long tribute to Ornette was really cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Doug Schulkind:

@hyde
The WKCR memorials are so amazing precisely (in part, in my view) because of their over-the-topness. Bless them for doing them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am Doug Schulkind:

@Dean
This is a full-service radio show. I checked your oil, too.
Avatar 11:15am hyde:

@Doug absolutely, they are really the best. when those happen, it's one of the few times i don't tune in fmu for a couple of days because i just commit to sticking those out every waking second.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Doug Schulkind:

We in our house have been engorging on WKCR's 10-day Bach festival, which they do at the end of every year. It is sonic wallowing at its finest.
  11:20am Dean:

It's best that I not learn about 10-day Bach festivals. If I were Emperor, there would be 365-day Bach festivals each year, with a one day respite in leap years.
Avatar 11:20am hyde:

didn't know about that. i'll check it out!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:22am Brian in UK:

I have trouble getting past Pablo Casals playing his cello suites.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Doug Schulkind:

My current obsession is Alfred Schnittke's Viola Concerto. I hereby promise to play the entire thing on an upcoming GTDS. I heard it at my daughter's viola recital a few weeks ago. Another student played a section from it and it blew me away. Check our Yuri Bashmet's performance of it on Youtube. Wows!
Avatar 11:25am Ham:

we made it!
  11:25am Dean:

@Brian in UK: Good or bad trouble? Is it because you don't want to give up listening to Casals? Or because his playing turns you off Bach? If the latter, introduce yourself to Bach via Tragicomedia's recording of excerpts from the Anna Magdalena Notebook. It is glorious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Doug Schulkind:

Hey, Ham! Where's Eggs?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Doug Schulkind:

Pablo Casals. Rosie Casals. Any relation?
Avatar 11:27am Shaun:

Juice harp. HNY Doug, Brian et al.
Avatar 11:27am Ham:

i guess Eggs didn't make it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Doug Schulkind:

YES! She was his great-niece!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Doug Schulkind:

Greets, Shaun!
  11:29am Dean:

The name of the current artist is onomatopoeic.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:31am Brian in UK:

@Dean only good trouble. Bach is such a force and the body of work is astounding.

Best gig, hearing Bach's Toccata and Fugue on a Viennese church organ in the middle of a 37c afternoon when the church was a haven of cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am Uncle Michael:

I hope you can all join me for hoppin' John in the next room.

wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am Doug Schulkind:

Jesus Fucking Christ! This notice from WKCR just came across my Facebook feed:

www.cc-seas.columbia.edu...

Aside from the horror, that's one wild coincidence.
  11:34am Dean:

@Brian in UK: You've come up, so far, with the best new band name of 2016: Haven of Cool.
  11:35am Dean:

My neighbor here in California is a student at Barnard. Just finished her first semester. I'll assign her the task of reviving the WKCR stream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Stanley:

Steppin' easy here.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:38am Brian in UK:

Hey Shaun and Stanley AND Ducky.
  11:45am Jeff g.:

Belated, enthusiastic new year's greetings to you, Doug, and all Drummers! May 2016 suck less than 2015 for all of us. (I'm a strong believer in setting realistic goals.)
  11:46am Dean:

I'll wedge this Carlos Guitarlos live tune from Down Home Records right here: http://www.downhomemusic.com/?p=739
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Doug Schulkind:

You are the opposite of suck, Jeff G! (And no, I don't mean blow.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Doug Schulkind:

Regarding WKCR ending streaming, here is what one WFMU person in the know says:

"Yes, ignorance and fear reign in the worlds of college and community radio, just like Soundexchange always hoped. The streaming rules changed as of today, and WKCR would need to register with NFCB or IBS in order to continue streaming (for less than $100 a year)."
  11:53am Artie Haywire:

Aaaannnnnd, I've slept thru all but the last 10 minutes... Happy New Years, Drummers!
Avatar 11:53am hyde:

@Doug hoo boy

excellent show Doug!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:55am Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Uncle Michael:

The sun gonna shine in my back door someday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Doug Schulkind:

@ndbob
You're just saying that.

Rine and shise, Artie Haywire!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Uncle Michael:

See you all shortly.

Thanks for starting my year off right, Doug.
Avatar 🥁 11:57am duke:

Thanks Doug. Best show of the year (so far)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am Doug Schulkind:

I rather agree, duke!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am Webhamster Henry:

Happy New Year, Uncle Michael .. there's going to be a kind of community walk here in Kingston, so I'll have to catch your whole show in the archives.
Avatar 12:00pm hyde:

thanks Doug!
