A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

@frenchee, I've noted both of those, but I don't know if I want to spend any more time on John Irving. The first book I read by him was In One Person. And while I am an atheist and believe in objective reality, Rand took a big crap on social engineering and forgot the most important premise: The world is what we make of it. Rand had some brilliant passages, and can really write a page turner (after all , her favorite author was....Mickey Spillane!)....but as a person, she was a turd. Like Salvador Dali whose work I like, but as a person despise...strongly....I look around at semi-deserted small town downtowns and it strongly reminds me of Rand scenarios....unlike in Poland where 500 year old downtowns will be re-utilized for anything like cell phone stores and cafes...unlike our strip mall mentality.....rant off...
