There was a particular doodle-dee-doo-doo-doo-doo in the strings back there which put me in mind of something familiar by Bartók.

This piece is using themes by Carlo Gesualdo, who died around 1615. Bartok may well have borrowed the same thing.

that might be the Spiro thing that caine and lin used, mike. they recorded onto the pianos and then took the pianos into the studio to play back for the recording.
