A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Are those Coke bottles custom modded, or were those actual prod'n models?
  9:05am

Or are they not mods at all, but ceramic artwork?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am

today's art work is by Zhang Hongtu- “Six-Pack of Kekou-Kele (Coca-Cola)". i have it labeled wrong in the picture. will change that later

Lovely! When I saw Dom a few weeks ago she tried to make the audience dance; all the Spanish and French people were up for it and most of we English people had think bubbles above our heads saying "Make it stop! We're FAR too self-conscious for this!"

bonjour tuesday/mardi!
  9:13am
Listener Robert:

What I'm asking is whether Zhang Hongtu arranged & photographed existing Coke bottles like that that were prod'n models, or painted the bottles, or made ceramics in the shape of Coke bottles & caps.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am

she did that in NYC also adrian! i saw less dancing thtn perhaps she would have liked. she toured with jane birkin before setting off on her own, I think she learned a thing or two from her about the "big" show styleee

I was talking to a deer hunter yesterday...he said fox have such a good sense of smell that fox traps (which is cruel, I know, he even said this) must be boiled then encased in wax to kill any stray scents...they have EXTREMELY good smell compared to any other animal...also did you know deer and turkey will often hang out together since Turkey have better eyesight but lousy smell, wheras deer have an excellent sense of smell?

Dean:

@βrian: Regulation of US radio spectrum allocation is a matter for federal officials, a relatively rare circumstance here, where the states tend (with exceptions, of course) to establish and enforce laws. Central coast-to-coast governance demands relatively rigid rules, without which station ID and other obligations would be handled chaotically, if at all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am
Adrian in London:

Happy birthday Sugarwolf - any birthday where you get a Francoise song played for you has got to be a good one.

It's the notion the radio content is necessarily delivered in small discrete packets that baffles me. This ain't Morse code.
  11:19am
Dean:

Well, it is delivered in small discrete packets. They're usually called ads or spots, WFMU being the exception to the rule.
  11:19am
Brendan:

Or every artist ( even the one singing now) could integrate an EAS shriek randomly in their catalogue.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am
fred:

@Brendan: Broadcasting that would be illegal, with a severe fine. The topic came up a few times on playlists
  11:28am
Dean:

Yeah, how can you test an emergency broadcast system absent a real emergency?

Along these lines, I was wondering recently if one could call 911 (a US phone number for reporting an emergency, akin to UK's 999, I think) to ask, "Quick! I've forgotten the number to reach the police for non-emergencies! Do you have it?!"

  11:52am
Ike:

Classical stations interpret the station ID rules as allowing them to finish out playing a very long piece beyond 5 min. after the top of the hour, as long as the announcer says the ID ASAP *after* the long piece ends. However FMU may be operating w/an extra abundance of caution given that the FCC is often less than 100% clear about... well, anything.
  11:54am
Listener Robert:

It's the "continuous programming" exception. Everybody agrees it's OK for covering a news event. Something planned, like playing a record, I could see where they say that's stretching the point.
Avatar 11:55am

I recall listening to a special on Messaiens on French radio. Hypnotically beautiful and I think a single segment spanned over two hours. So nice.

WFMU should devote a program to playing unexpurgated George Carlin albums. That'll teach the FCC.
