Todd, I love the music you play, but I can't stand to listen to you SHOUT AT THE TOP OF YOUR LUNGS. Take it down about five notches, please!

from an old S.F. Punk who was deep in the scene in 78' I revere your contribution to our shared culture Alejandro. Thank you

Dean:

Saw The Zeros at the Elks Lodge benefit for the Masque, early 1978. Great act those guys.

ScottC:

I remember when a lot of the original scene punks were moving to Austin. Weird thing. The void was partially filled with L. A. Hardcore and the whole scene changed - more violent. The Austin migration didn't start it but I rememebr it was like a death...
  4:05pm
Dean:

Not to go all provincial, but LA Hardcore emerged out of OC.

Does Alejandro listen/pay attention to Jimmy LaFave?

Great tunes and interview - nice work as always, Todd and Glenn!

ScottC:

geeez...this brings back memories. the Dils were sort of a divisive band because they did go the more commercial route with Rank & File and their Slash release. You were on one side or the other.
  4:20pm
ashley morey:

Perfect selections as always. Love it!!
  4:21pm
Dean:

Yes, and even before then, as The Dils, they assumed a political identity that didn't quite fit the LA punk vibe. The Weirdos' "We Got the Neutron Bomb" was about the limit for LA punk political discourse. Then these guys show up from SF shouting about "Class War."
  4:28pm
ScottC:

@Dean I totally agree. The S.F. and L.A. scenes were like oil and water just because of the urban/suburban schism and there were very few who could span that gap - Jello, Darby. I was involved in a few dust ups with L.A. Punks and it was really like an enemy thing even though they were at the show to see the same band you were. I think that maybe it was about staking territory on our patch...

Ditto EFD. Nice to see your "sensitive side",Todd.Last time I saw AE was at Scelsa's 30/50 event at the Bottom Line. Sure would be nice to have him at Monty!
  4:35pm
Dean:

I remember the territorial impulse, but never outright dust-ups. The placidity of the LA scene was one of its charms for me. I was involved with the Flip Side crowd, who embraced The Dils, The Avengers, Crime, The Offs, etc. I do remember asides about "socialism" or some such, not because the LA folks were (willing) capitalists, but because the reigning ethos was a sublime apathy. We weren't London, hence we needed no Clash.

Syl Johnson's the real deal, ain't he?

FMU DJ's have done right by Allen Toussaint this week. A giant getting the kind of tribute he deserves. I daresay there's probably not another station playing as much of his music, except our sister station in the Crescent City, WWOZ.

Nice to hear Hatch on the air again - congrats to him, Puloma, and Michael on the NYC premiere! Unfortunately I can't make the screening tomorrow but I'm hoping there will be other opportunities to see it soon.

Allen Toussaint tributes include Mr. Fine Wine as well. I think someone also mentioned Debbie on the Ichiban stream, too. I guess Google could turn up some others.
