Listener Robert, that was a good read, but the author was wrong to assert that NPR was exempted from the anti-government defunding mania of the early 90s. On the contrary, I can remember the Contract with America crowd outright crowing that they were going to croak NPR. I stopped listening to NPR in the late aughts when, presumably in defensive response to those efforts, they started bending over backwards to be "fair and balanced" toward the right.

Yes, Parq, I noticed that too, and it seemed to me hilarious how transparent NPR's sudden change of attitude was. And I'm not a leftist, and always had considered NPR to be the type of propaganda those people complained about. But it was AUTHENTIC propaganda, so I listened to it! Then it became a weird mixture of authentic propaganda & counter-pandering.

The only NPR (or maybe APM, but I think NPR) program that seemed to have the right introspective attitude in response was "On The Media", whose theme was, "How could we have been so clueless?" If it wasn't sincere, it was a very good act, enough to convince me at least. Ran out of material in a couple years, though.

Yes - Public Broadcasting has been in an existential & political crisis for some time. I still get so much from NPR - local weather, several podcasts from various stations around the country...

NPR used to be like PBS used to be, not slick, not that well-funded, openly experimental and a conscious "alternative" to what the "commercial media were doing. There was even something slightly subversive about Sesame Street when it first appeared. That's all gone now.
I do remember the college stations had always been in that "left of the dial" zone the article mentions, and everyone I knew did flock to them when commercial radio really turned to crap at the end of the seventies. FMU was always there, evolving...

You should see college radio now. I'm a college DJ and we work off preprogrammed logs playing the shittiest possible "modern rock". Even our specialty shows play the same songs over and over. I do the funk show on Friday nights and a guy called this past Friday telling me it was the best two hours of radio he'd heard in 20 years, simply because I actually dared to play stuff that doesn't come from our tiny little funk section of our tiny little music library.

Bronwyn, I was on college radio when the era of so-called college rock was just getting off the ground (I did my last show in July of '79). One other thing that New Republic piece neglects is the role of record companies in creating that scene. Even before punk, they turned to college stations to push the music they couldn't sell on commercial radio, and often expected the college radio music directors to be outright shills for the labels. By the time "college rock" came to be a Thing, they has successfully co-opted college stations into a directly controlled marketing arm of the big label consortium. I always suspected that they were pretty much dictating playlists, and what you're saying bears that out.

Yeah Parq, I've observed that too, having interned at a couple labels including WMG. I've observed the big label guys discussing marketing plans for certain bands and then at school, guess which bands our music directors seem suspiciously excited about?
