Listener comments!
6:05am : mornin' all. Didja remember to set the clocks one hour early? If not, enjoy this show, regardless...6:07am : hep. I'm enjoying.6:09am : mauri, I'm enjoying your enjoyment.6:12am : Great show. I listened to the 7' show three times already. That's 9 hours well spent. thx for the music.6:14am : thanks George.6:16am : No..
thank you6:18am : Good November morning. Help me wake up and get through the day.6:22am : thanks Cooh John. WAKE UP!6:49am : hello fxo and all. Hoping to tune in later, but for now, just saying hi! Boooo to music-less morning for me :( Enjoy!6:58am : Lovin' the tunes Frank! :-)>6:59am : remember, left, et al, this webcast will be available within an hour, after this live webcast, ends. Catch me if you can.
Smokin'J: thanks.7:03am : Wait, was that crazy Charlatans cut "then" or now??7:08am : Will: cut now, as well as their reunion, in the late 90s. Newer now...7:32am : ...don't know for sure yet if today will be possible - but it's more probable w/ the FXO show...7:35am : enterin a carwash7:40am : RevRab: say, what?
mauri, at least, you're not drivin'.7:45am : its for my feet.7:51am : like the Flintstones?7:54am : Nice demos8:01am : Nice set, fxo.8:02am : much obliged, BEAVO, and P-90.8:12am : A friend just sent me this link to a recent art., which maybe you've read, maybe not:
www.newrepublic.com...8:13am : Since the URL gets shortened in the display here, I'll give the art. name: "How NPR Killed College Rock".8:15am : thanks Listener Robert. Glad we're not a College Rock station.8:17am : Hi Frank. Been listening with pleasure for about a half hour here. That was nifty, going from Joni to Jack Bruce before. I never noticed it, but he kinda sounds like her on that track, doesn't he?8:21am : Parq: I loved the melodic transition between Joni & Jack.8:28am : Loved both of the Beach Boys pieces ('Til I Die and the mashup...)8:28am : I read the article (turns out to be a book excerpt) & discovered why I'm broke. I love free enterprise & I'm not a rebel against anything, much, yet I'm perceived as an outsider, a weirdo who's not trying to be weird.8:30am : If only I'd been a hippie, or a yuppie, or punk, or whatever, I coulda been something.8:30am : What a great set!8:31am : Listener Robert, that was a good read, but the author was wrong to assert that NPR was exempted from the anti-government defunding mania of the early 90s. On the contrary, I can remember the Contract with America crowd outright crowing that they were going to croak NPR. I stopped listening to NPR in the late aughts when, presumably in defensive response to those efforts, they started bending over backwards to be "fair and balanced" toward the right.8:36am : Thanks for a great show Frank as usual. Listening from NJ instead of Dublin because I'm attending band mate Michael Carlucci's funeral. You've made a sad morning a little brighter. Thx.8:37am : Bullwinkle & Rocky outtakes: www.youtube.com...8:39am : Yes, Parq, I noticed that too, and it seemed to me hilarious how transparent NPR's sudden change of attitude was. And I'm not a leftist, and always had considered NPR to be the type of propaganda those people complained about. But it was AUTHENTIC propaganda, so I listened to it! Then it became a weird mixture of authentic propaganda & counter-pandering.8:39am : @Parq: I pretty much abandoned NPR in the late aughts too. It had lost whatever original character it had become blandly, numbingly corporatized.8:42am : BillyD: condolences, friend.8:43am : Love the R. Stevie bed music!8:44am : The only NPR (or maybe APM, but I think NPR) program that seemed to have the right introspective attitude in response was "On The Media", whose theme was, "How could we have been so clueless?" If it wasn't sincere, it was a very good act, enough to convince me at least. Ran out of material in a couple years, though.8:45am : Thanks Bronwyn, I'll pass it on to him...8:46am : Aw, thanks!8:47am : @BillyD: Condolences.
Yes - Public Broadcasting has been in an existential & political crisis for some time. I still get so much from NPR - local weather, several podcasts from various stations around the country...8:47am : NPR used to be like PBS used to be, not slick, not that well-funded, openly experimental and a conscious "alternative" to what the "commercial media were doing. There was even something slightly subversive about Sesame Street when it first appeared. That's all gone now.
I do remember the college stations had always been in that "left of the dial" zone the article mentions, and everyone I knew did flock to them when commercial radio really turned to crap at the end of the seventies. FMU was always there, evolving...8:48am : College radio used to be purty dern FreeForm, as I recall...8:49am : You should see college radio now. I'm a college DJ and we work off preprogrammed logs playing the shittiest possible "modern rock". Even our specialty shows play the same songs over and over. I do the funk show on Friday nights and a guy called this past Friday telling me it was the best two hours of radio he'd heard in 20 years, simply because I actually dared to play stuff that doesn't come from our tiny little funk section of our tiny little music library.8:54am : Keep the faith, friends...
glad you enjoyed the show. I'll be back, next Monday morning, 6AM to 9AM, here with a new webcast, at WFMU.org, as well as WFMU, East Orange, etc.. Have a nice week.8:54am : Bronwyn, I was on college radio when the era of so-called college rock was just getting off the ground (I did my last show in July of '79). One other thing that New Republic piece neglects is the role of record companies in creating that scene. Even before punk, they turned to college stations to push the music they couldn't sell on commercial radio, and often expected the college radio music directors to be outright shills for the labels. By the time "college rock" came to be a Thing, they has successfully co-opted college stations into a directly controlled marketing arm of the big label consortium. I always suspected that they were pretty much dictating playlists, and what you're saying bears that out.8:55am : FXO, is the coming Mon. a Jewish holiday? No JM in the AM, so you'll be on radio?8:56am : There's the swing to the Right - & there's been the Great Recession - which are the same thing - in that the money all around got tighter...
Hm - an interesting perspective, maybe, on why 'Alternative' got ghettoized instead of just becoming the new Rock...8:56am : Parq, I thought the article DID mention that.8:57am : Yeah Parq, I've observed that too, having interned at a couple labels including WMG. I've observed the big label guys discussing marketing plans for certain bands and then at school, guess which bands our music directors seem suspiciously excited about?8:58am : Robert, I'll be doing my webcast, but not on the radio.
thanks y'all.8:59am : Thanks fxo, Alfred Hitchcock and Donna Dixon seem to come too soon every week. You should have four hours. Or maybe five...8:59am : Oh. You wrote upthread, "...as well as WFMU, East Orange, etc."9:12am : thanks, P-90, I appreciate it.
and, Robert, it's the WFMU legal ID.
