Street interviews, listener call-ins, vinyl gluttery, sporadic normalcy, original floperas and fiktion, blatant talking over songs, politix, tenderness, and a vague undercurrent of angst. Right up your alley!

Thanks for listening to this Halloween episode of The Dusty Show. I enjoyed assembling it and taking an extra day to do it. If you've listened in the past, maybe you recognize some songs I've played on Halloween shows before. While I like to introduce new material when I can, I do enjoy having certain recurring songs on The Dusty Show so that a certain familiarity develops. A coziness of sorts.

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO PLEDGED iduring WFMU's Silent Fundraiser. You helped me to reach the goal for the show, which was a big relief. THANKS again!!!!!! I will thank everyone on the air next week.

I hope you had a fun Halloween. I stayed home and watched the Mets lose :>(

Please keep listening and drop me a line if you're so inclined. Dusty@wfmu.org. It's always good to hear from the listeners. Until next time ... take care and ... always remember!

i read that ghost sightings dramatically decreased when cell phones became common. theory is they work on the same frequency. i kid you not
Avatar 6:09pm
Matt from Springfield:

The razor in apples is just an urban myth/scare story for the most part--prob happened 0-1 times total. The moral of the story is: Halloween is for CANDY!! What'reya giving healthy FRUIT for?!!

it was the late 60s when kids were scared of getting caught. not like these whippersnappers today.
Avatar 6:13pm
Matt from Springfield:

@dale: Ick!!! That's the 2nd worst Halloween gyp, besides religious tracts.

That's an interesting ghost sightings/cell phone frequency connection. Infrasound (sounds below the 20 Hz audible frequncy) still vibrate on your body, and that's been suggested to generate fear of ghosts, spirits in the corner of your eye, physical unease and numerous other phenomena.

are you saying ne'er do wells didn't exist in the late 60s?

Uhm, yeah, the razor blade story...in my neighborhood at least...was a myth. No truth to it whatsoever. Besides, I was too young at the time to shave.

Speaking of "religious", I seem to spread the word about infrasound whenever I'm on this playlist! Always seems to come up/connect with the topic! :) You know, like when you watch a rerun of a show, don't watch it for months, and then you see that exact same episode!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm

neat article matt!

Way back in the 60's, the "candy bars laced with LSD" rumor competed with the "razor blade apple" for a few years.

Therese's too, Carm! That was terrifying, many of that generation seem to rate that among the scariest.

Per OED, from a 1677 issue of Plain-Dealer: "Prithee, captain, let's go drink a dish of laced coffee, and talk of the times." And Thackeray's Henry Esmond, 1852: "Polly loves a mug of ale, too, and laced with brandy."

JakeGhould:

@MarcelM: “By the spring of the following year (1977), the whirlwind early sales had slipped noticeably in the New York area. Rumors that Bubble Yum contained spider's eggs or legs or was made from their webs abounded. (A less well-circulated rumor had it that the confection caused cancer. It too dates from the same time period.) Schoolyard tall tales about a girl waking up with webs all over her face or nine youngsters dying after swallowing the gum spread quickly among kids and were soon taken as gospel.” www.snopes.com...

Is anyone familiar with "Horrortorio", from 1961, it has the familiar Hollywood/Halloween monsters as characters in a classical-style oratorio? It's been recorded a few times I think. Worth checking out, clever, funny, well done.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm
Marcel M:

Why do people love to call rappers artists? Not saying they aren't but its rarely used for other music forms.
Avatar 6:29pm

I went to the EMP exhibit in Seattle recently, to look at all the vintage guitars. I also found a basement museum of science fiction & horror. Among other things, they had the original flying ball from Phantasm.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm
Marcel M:

@Jake: A rather eldritch rumor!

Agreed, Marcel, although I do wonder whether the earliest usage listed is necessarily the earliest known. I think I've found examples to make my point.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm

I think almost all generes have SOMETHING to offer. Some way less than others.

This is really fun Clay!
Avatar 6:36pm

@Marcel: I get what you're saying. Making music is a "musician", but since rap isn't fully music, they emphasize themselves as "artists" instead. (It is better than calling yourself a "street beat vocal poetry technician", though.)
