speakin of mix tapes. i spent untold hours making mix tapes back then .. with artfully collaged covers! don't forget: no mp3 players. of course you mixed for yourself. & shared too. Some of mine traveled pretty far! strictly person to person.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm

Linda Lee:

OH MY GOD! uptown top rankin!! wow.one of my very favorite singles ever! you guys have my number. songs i loved & haven't heard in decades. fabulous. you're takin me back to a truly amazing time in the city of New York.. late 70s early 80s. first reggae i heard was stuff like this. not bob marley.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm
coelacanth:

yes Linda (@10:20) i put a lot of time and thought into them; and if i didn't use a self-shot & printed photograph for the cover,i'd make a collage,as you did.
i wonder if any of them are still out there...but i did usually make a copy for myself too.
i have every tape ever made for me. (but then i still listen to and record with cassettes.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
coelacanth:

ink spots?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
coelacanth:

(i was brainwashed with the inkspots once!)
  10:40pm
Linda Lee:

@coelacanth .. amazing that you still have those cassettes. .. i actually had some i made in the mid 80s come back to me recently .. pretty wild hearing them. like a little memory capsule. & the medium is so flimsy too!
  10:41pm
Linda Lee:

.. you were brainwashed with the inkspots ... ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm
coelacanth:

'must've been great to have them return. i suppose it wouldn't be quite the same for me- having copies of most of them the whole time.
  10:43pm
Linda Lee:

there's an early talking heads song that pulled this come on guitar riff directly ..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm
coelacanth:

is this a 78 at 45rpm?!
  10:44pm
Linda Lee:

i think it's a 45 at 33.
Avatar 10:44pm

Yeah I was gonna say this sounds pretty different from the version I know. I like it!
  10:45pm
Linda Lee:

thought it was another old reggae side at first .. ha
  10:45pm
Sue P:

This is a 7" 45 on 33! Sound like Beefheart. ❤️
Avatar 10:45pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

It reminds me of the creepy Springsteen single I bought that turned out to be messed up somehow so that it was really slow. It sounds kinda cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
coelacanth:

it doesn't sound remixed to me. it just sounds slow.
Avatar 10:46pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Wow you're right Sue, it does sound like Beefheart! Now we know that Beefheart is just the Seeds at 33 ;)
  10:50pm
Linda Lee:

@coelacanth .. yes pretty wild getting the tapes back. i'd forgotten all about them .. but as soon as i saw them i remembered making them very clearly.
Avatar 10:51pm

  11:00pm
Sue P:

"The Porpoise Song" is from Head.
Avatar 11:01pm

I don't think Different Drum was recorded by the Monkees but Mike did play it briefly on the show at one point.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm

i donated and i'm trying to credit a few different shows but the pledge page makes it an illogical, convoluted process; so i must wait for the transaction to show on my bank's site so i know what's going on.
