It is ridiculous that I haven't mentioned this yet, but: YOUR PET could be the WFMU MASCOT if you pledge to our silent fundraiser! Before October's end, use the pledge widget at the top of this page to make a pledge... and then you can upload your pet's picture and get him/her in the running. OK to use someone else's pet or a wild/feral animal if you don't have your own.

@doctorjazz, though the final decision is up to management I don't see how campaigning could hurt!

A local (NYC) radio station with "Power" in its name used to drop the name and frequency # into the BTTF song over Huey's "Power of Love"s in the middle. Awful, awful. Enough to send you to the transmitter with a pound of C4.

Oh. "Shingles"...45s...I didn't know that one, thanks. I did get herpes zoster, though, 3 yrs. ago, & wound up w some apparently permanent post-herpetic neuropathy in my left hand. The shooting pains gradually became less & less frequent, rare now, but numbness & weakness has continued.
  12:57pm
Listener Robert:

Oh, wait..."shingles" is NOT existing slang for records owing to their physical form, but you're just punning on "singles"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm

Interesting that the FDA and CDC are split on the vaccine's starting age: 50 vs. 60.
@Robert: Hoping the remaining symptoms fade along with the pains.

Oh, heck, I make jokes about stuff like that all the time, Amanda. I didn't learn until recently, however, that both "shingles" & "zoster" derive from words for "belt", for the dermatomal distribution of the condition.

Avatar 1:18pm
northguineahills:

My father picked up shingles while camping in Virginia 17 years ago. He gave it me, and I gave it to my gf, and b/tn the two of us, we were the vectors for about 40 of our friends. Really fun seeing the trail of the mites take in your dermal tissue. Good thing it's relatively easy to treat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

A man walks into the doctor's office early one morning and announces that he has shingles. They have him fill out paperwork, wait for an hour and finally lead him to the doctor. They give him a battery of tests, but find no evidence of any shingles. As they're about to close for the day, a nurse asks him one last time where are the shingles. "They're outside on the truck. Where do you want them?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm
doctorjazz:

Picky picky, VZ stands for Varicella Zoster Virus, and it is all pretty much interchangeable in common usage. The virus is part of the Herpes family of viruses. They hang out in the nerve root as in the diagram, and can flare up years later.
  1:19pm

@a listener: I had mumps 10 years ago when I was in my 20s when it was going around NYC. My health insurance hadn't kicked in, and neither had my sick days, so, I still went to work. I had eat only liquid food since my tonsils were the size of lemons. I happened to have some leftover antibiotics which were the right type for the mumps (I asked my father, who's a physician). Something that just makes my immune system stronger.

Northguinea, that's a very interesting story, given the conventional wisdom that shingle is not contagious. The virology & pathology of varicella zoster has long been a mindfuck to me. Hard to understand how a vaccine can work in a patient who already has had the temperate virus resident for decades.
