I did get herpes zoster, though, 3 yrs. ago, & wound up w some apparently permanent post-herpetic neuropathy in my left hand. The shooting pains gradually became less & less frequent, rare now, but numbness & weakness has continued.

	1:18pm northguineahills: My father picked up shingles while camping in Virginia 17 years ago. He gave it me, and I gave it to my gf, and b/tn the two of us, we were the vectors for about 40 of our friends. Really fun seeing the trail of the mites take in your dermal tissue. Good thing it's relatively easy to treat.
	1:18pm Ken From Hyde Park: A man walks into the doctor's office early one morning and announces that he has shingles. They have him fill out paperwork, wait for an hour and finally lead him to the doctor. They give him a battery of tests, but find no evidence of any shingles. As they're about to close for the day, a nurse asks him one last time where are the shingles. "They're outside on the truck. Where do you want them?"
	1:18pm doctorjazz: Picky picky, VZ stands for Varicella Zoster Virus, and it is all pretty much interchangeable in common usage. The virus is part of the Herpes family of viruses. They hang out in the nerve root as in the diagram, and can flare up years later.

	1:24pm northguineahills: @a listener: I had mumps 10 years ago when I was in my 20s when it was going around NYC. My health insurance hadn't kicked in, and neither had my sick days, so, I still went to work. I had eat only liquid food since my tonsils were the size of lemons. I happened to have some leftover antibiotics which were the right type for the mumps (I asked my father, who's a physician). Something that just makes my immune system stronger.

	1:26pm MONEYBAG$: I actually thought about that foam dinosaur the other day! Someone gave me a pair of boxer shorts compressed into a tiny cube that needed water to expand. Worked about as well as the dinosaur.
	1:26pm Listener Robert: Northguinea, that's a very interesting story, given the conventional wisdom that shingle is not contagious. The virology & pathology of varicella zoster has long been a mindfuck to me. Hard to understand how a vaccine can work in a patient who already has had the temperate virus resident for decades.
	1:26pm northguineahills: UM: whoops, I meant, scabies, not shingles. Although, I did have a very minor case of the shingles, from the dormant virus of having the chicken pox when I was a kid.
	1:26pm Rich in Washington: this was one of the most memorable Simpsons episodes for me. Now I wanna watch it!
	1:28pm northguineahills: My father, on the other hand, had a severe case of shingles thanks to me having chicken pox (it was shortly after, could be a coincidence, since he did work in a hospital). He was in bed for over a week.

	1:29pm a listener: @ngh I'm in the UK, we still had a decent NHS at the time. Funnily enough both times I was at my mum's younger sister in Devon. I can remember them hiding the foul tasting medicine in strawberry's and me figuring this out, eating the strawberry's and hiding the tablets. The second time I was force fed them.

	1:18pm northguineahills: My father picked up shingles while camping in Virginia 17 years ago. He gave it me, and I gave it to my gf, and b/tn the two of us, we were the vectors for about 40 of our friends. Really fun seeing the trail of the mites take in your dermal tissue. Good thing it's relatively easy to treat.

They have him fill out paperwork, wait for an hour and finally lead him to the doctor. They give him a battery of tests, but find no evidence of any shingles. As they're about to close for the day, a nurse asks him one last time where are the shingles. "They're outside on the truck. Where do you want them?"
	1:18pm doctorjazz: Picky picky, VZ stands for Varicella Zoster Virus, and it is all pretty much interchangeable in common usage. The virus is part of the Herpes family of viruses. They hang out in the nerve root as in the diagram, and can flare up years later.

My health insurance hadn't kicked in, and neither had my sick days, so, I still went to work. I had eat only liquid food since my tonsils were the size of lemons. I happened to have some leftover antibiotics which were the right type for the mumps (I asked my father, who's a physician). Something that just makes my immune system stronger.

The virology & pathology of varicella zoster has long been a mindfuck to me. Hard to understand how a vaccine can work in a patient who already has had the temperate virus resident for decades.
