That pillars/candy thing sounds like a dream.
Avatar 12:30am
Matt from Springfield:

@BGZ: You and those SPKs - but perhaps one pillar is stuffed more with sour candies, and another focused on sweet ones. Now, should we tear them down like "tearing" paper, or knock through with a stick, like a piñata?
Avatar 12:31am

@Jake: In all likelihood...that sounds like the likeliest answer for the title.

Folks, I tried to repair this old cassette player I bought in 1995 for like $5 but the belts are rotted and I am not motivated to fix it. So with all these new cassette releases… Who sells new cassette players? I want one.

@BadGuyZero: Yeah, I’ve seen those and have heard mixed things about that. I don’t need a thing with A/D conversion. Just a cassette player. Might need to find some old stereo shop.
  12:53am
JakeGould:

In the South I hear they mock you if you call Pecans “Pea cans.” They’ll say, “A pea can is what you kick down the street!”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56am
mariano:

I'm from New Orleans, and it has to be p'CAHN. Same thing with praline, which down there is prah-LEEN. Once ordering food from a place in Brooklyn, I kept saying pecan pie the Southern way, and the woman had no idea what I was saying till I described it. Oh, PEA-can pie! she said. She told me she thought I was ordering something Chinese!

Chinese #45: "Pe Con Pi Pan"
Not to be confused with the Pea-can pie, stuffing a whole unopened tin can in a pie crust, like the 3 Stooges.
Avatar 1:01am
Matt from Springfield:

There's an interesting dialect map of "pecan" throughout the U.S. Wisconsin has a totally different one - I asked a co-worker from WI how they say that, and they say "PEA-kon", rhymes with "Mekon".

Pretty sure owls ain't poultry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03am
mariano:

@Jake: Hah! That's interesting about the pecan map. I don't even have a Southern accent, but certain things are just said certain ways, end of story: pecan, praline, and of course crawfish.
Avatar 1:03am
BadGuyZero:

@Matt: That's how it's pronounced by most people in Texas. My relatives from Ohio pronounce it "pea can."

Avatar 1:06am

@BGZ: I only say for "pea can pie", otherwise just "pih'con", like mariano's way but less twang.

@Matt: Glad you had a good time! I'm due for a visit this year, it's been a while. My mom lives in Shreveport now (boring), so that's where I've been going lately. Well, it's unfair to compare S'port to NOLA. It's got some great food and a pretty good music scene. It is the South after all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11am
mariano:

And after all, the Residents are from Shreveport originally. And Leadbelly. And boogie woogie started there. That has to count for something.
  1:17am
JakeGould:

@mariano: Wait… All of “The Residents?” They are the great unknown band made up of many.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18am
mariano:

Oh wow, Sweet Sweet Satan would go well on a comp with Lucifer Rise by Imaginary Icons, a band Liz B played a while back. @Jake: apparently they all went to high school together in Shreveport in the 60s then moved to California: en.wikipedia.org...

Is that like a Penguin et fromage, Matt?

KP:
Croque Pingouin Madame or Monsieur?

Matt from Springfield:
@KP: Depends if they find a penguin egg...

I knew a guy in high school who claimed one of his relatives was a member of the Residents but I never really believed him.
  1:25am
JakeGould:

@BadGuyZero: So it seems that one of the most consistent producers of cassette recorders/players is CALIFONE. The school tape makers. All of them are mono. But some of them are really cheap online and they’re made so kids can deal with them so they are solid.

Wooooooooo! Hardcore Dixieland gospel brass!!!

@rw: Was he from Shreveport?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27am

@Jake: To be honest I don't know either, but apparently Homer Flynn, the public face of Cryptic Corporation, is from Shreveport, and he's long been rumored to be a member, but, with those guys, like you said, who knows?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32am

I forget which New Orleanian said it, but s/he said the trick is to look at New Orleans as a high-functioning Caribbean city instead of a dysfunctional American one. It's great to hear all this stuff, Professor Longhair, etc. One thing about NO is that people down there are really into the NO music, so you hear it everywhere, it's a real badge of pride.
Avatar 1:35am
Matt from Springfield:

@mariano: That's a good way of putting it.
Lots of cross-influence over the years too w/ the west Caribbean. I heard that in the 50s and 60s you could listen to AM radio from Jamaica in NOLA, and hear the developing ska and reggae styles. Then of course there's all the gospel and rock we sent down there before that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37am
Ken From Hyde Park:

This is like Doctor Romo's Cajun Medicine Show on WVKR 91.3 at Vassar College near me. It's on Thursday mornings 9AM to noon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38am
mariano:

@Matt: that's true, and they could also pick up NOLA radio in Jamaica, and the soul and 50s rock from NOLA had a huge influence on early ska and rocksteady. There's great radio down there too: WWOZ, WTUL from Tulane.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40am

Thanks so much for listening guys! Super excited for NOLA later this month! Also, I can't say any more on air because SHHHHHH but WFMU is fundraising all this month. Shirts and swag abound for the faithful!
