Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from September 25, 2015 Favoriting

Uncle Michael's avatar View Uncle Michael's profile Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Dean:

The Warnes album was a lodestar for high-end audio types immediately upon its arrival. That's how I found out about it, and that's why it took me so long to pay any attention to it. Funny, just this morning I was thinking about it. I picked up a couple cheap old Rondstadt LPs yesterday. To my ears they are splendidly recorded and engineered, a fact that reminded me of Warnes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm
Uncle Michael:

I can't hold Jennifer and Linda in the same thought. I am not a fan of Linda.
  1:19pm
Dean:

A pity. Those pre-'76 records are really well done in every respect: material, performance, engineering. Sure, J.D. Souther and Andrew Gold could be jerky, but I guess that comes with the territory (namely, Hollywood). If there's a QED, it's Linda's take on Dolly's "I Will Always Love You." Dolly's is beautiful, and I wouldn't want to prefer one to the other, but Linda owns it, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm
Uncle Michael:

I think those records are perfection and that Linda has a hell of a set of pipes...somewhere along the line I started noticing that I wasn't hearing any real human connection between the singer and the song. They just sound like words when she sings...to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm
coelacanth:

Michael i've been inconsistently here but now i'm out for good.
Thank you!
ciao y'all.
  1:26pm
Dean:

That captures what I heard beginning with "Hasten Down the Wind," which is weird, because it's pretty much another "Hasten" and "Prisoner," featuring tunes by Karla Bonoff, Ry Cooder, Warren Zevon, Willy Nelson. I *should* enjoy it, but I don't. Maybe at that point the Ronstadt template had taken over.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm
Uncle Michael:

Take care coelacanth!

I love Karla Bonoff records.
  1:28pm
Dean:

Hell, yeah.
  1:29pm
