Favoriting September 16, 2015: Annual show dedicated to my high school friend Jim McIntyre, aka Jimmy Mack, without whose influence this show probably wouldn't exist.

Back in October 2006 I dedicated my first show on the regular WFMU weekly schedule to Jim McIntyre, a/k/a Jimmy Mack, who was one of my best friends in high school. Pictured above is his Xeroxed 1977 Year In Review, which I was delighted to come across in a box of mementos recently.

Jimmy was the person who turned me on to a TON of new music that was coming out during the mid- and late-'70s -- Cheap Trick, The Dictators, The Ramones, The Stranglers, Ultravox, and Television are just a few of the bands that I first heard of because of my friendship with Jimmy. Imagine being in your teens and having a friend turn you on to just ONE of those bands. Now increase that impact tenfold, or more, and you start to get an idea of the importance of Jimmy's friendship. OK, not every band he turned me on to was super-cool -- he gave me the first couple of Foreigner albums, for instance -- but still, Jimmy had a great ear for cool music that wasn't yet -- or, sometimes, ever -- part of the mainstream.

Fortunately for me -- and for you -- that excitement and passion for discovering and sharing new music was matched by his generosity. Nearly every time I saw him he'd present me with a bag of extra (or rejected) promo records from his WBCN job. (He dropped out of high school, started volunteering on the WBCN "Listener Line," and wound up being the music director when he was barely 18 years old.) Many of the records he gave me back then records remain favorites of mine to this day.

In the summer of 1985, Jimmy learned he had AIDS. A year later he passed away, at the age of 25. As you can see from the obituary that ran in the Boston Globe he was as generous with his time as he was with records. Regrettably I had lost contact with Jimmy by this time, and didn't hear of his passing until a few years later.

In the fall of 2006 I dedicated my first weekly show on the regular WFMU schedule to Jimmy. I wanted to acknowledge his impact on my life, and especially on my own musical tastes. Since then I've dedicated one of the first shows of the WFMU fall schedule to him, since his influence is never too far from what you hear me play on my show. Thanks for taking a moment to read about him, and thanks for listening to WFMU.

I had a record store clerk (turned into great friend of 29 years) turn me on to that very Kraftwerk track - another Jimmy. :) He saw me keep picking up the Pixies "Doolittle" album in '89 and then put it down over and over - I couldn't get an accurate read on what I was reading about them in Thrasher Magazine and what I was hearing from their single "Here comes Your Man." One day he'd had enough and shouted out, "Just get it!!! It's good." Friends ever since. :)

@efd: What a lovely tribute to a friend who gave you something enduring: an appreciation of music not as some secret handshake to the Cool Club but as something that transcends uniforms and cliques and such artificial barriers.   9:52pm
clinton hensley:

Great show, E! Glad I was able to tune in. This show is reminding me of how much of an education it was to go into a record store, looking over your shoulder to see if the clerk was scoffing at what you picked up in curiosity or giving you that look of approval. Ha! My greatest head-nods came from picking up Bad Brains s/t cassette on ROIR and Black Flag's "First Four Years." :) Great times. Thanks for jogging those memories.

Pete, that comment makes me so happy because that's pretty much exactly the feeling I'm going for.

@P-90: No because I was 20 years away from being born, but I love that video. It was Don Kirshner's Rock Concert and I was so used to them as little old people in FFS, which is what introduced me to them, that it was a shock to see them as 70s rock stars! I was hooked right from the start of "Something For the Girl With Everything."

Well, I'd never heard of them before the FFS album came out this year. I'm 21, so they weren't exactly on my radar. I thought, "what a cool pair of 60-something gentleman doing an album with Franz Ferdinand, I wonder what they're all about!" And from there I discovered their old stuff and became a fan! (Much more so than I am a fan of Franz Ferdinand, who I merely have mildly pleasant feelings for.)

Snoopy in his guise as the “World Famous Skater” wanted to attend the 1968 Winter Olympics:

”This alter ego is first seen on December 4, 1967, skating by himself before stating that he misses skating with Sonja Henie. Over the next several days, he practices for the upcoming Winter Olympic Games in Grenoble, France. Linus van Pelt tries to assist Snoopy by raising money for him while his sister, Lucy, expresses skepticism. When Snoopy leaves for Grenoble on December 16, Charlie Brown angrily blames Linus for encouraging Snoopy by taking up a collection. Snoopy returns home soon after when he realizes that his trek to Grenoble is blocked by an ocean.”

Always like a band that reminds you of something but is difficult to categorize.

Always love your shows EFD. Hey, wow! You played The Rings! Aren't they Boston via Rhode Island or something? Don't feel compelled to answer. Just keep laying down those hot stacks 'o wax! Great show!

hey thanks Clay! I was wondering if that was you commenting about Gary Richrath... I figured the odds were pretty good.

I do think the Rings were from the Boston area, though I never heard of them until I picked up that LP from a used bin recently. Thanks for the kind words!
