hey Gordon, hello to all out there in radioland! Thanks to Faye for the invite to fill-in

efd:

Greetings Talk's Cheap listeners (and Jason)! For those of you listening over the air at 91.1 and think you're hearing a skipping CD, it's actually an issue at the transmitter site. I talked to Ken a few minutes ago and unfortunately he is not able to remotely fix the situation, so prepare for instrumental surf music on 91.1 until further notice. 90.1, 91.9 and streams are all fine so listen that way if you can.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm
Ike:

As EFD just noted on Gaylord's playlist, 91.1 is having problems, so it's been switched to instrumental surf music. And it's quite good! I might listen to that instead of you, Jason! Ha ha, j/k.

@Listener Robert - Gremlins.
  7:36pm
JakeGould:

The transmitter is transmitting. The satellite downlink is screwy. So I believe the fallback is to run a looping playlist of all kinds of wacky music and stuff so the 91.1FM signal is not completely dead.

I look at this as a “zombie” setup. Neither dead nor truly alive.

Hello Jason , good to hear you - hello all hope ye are having a nice Sunday.

Brian Turner!
  7:42pm

The problem is in a link at the E. Orange site that receives from satellite, converts it to FM, & pipes it into the xmtr?
  7:43pm
Listener Robert:

Oh, MonikER. I thought maybe MonicA had made something.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm
efd:

this note with a little more info was just posted to the home page:

"Our 91.1 FM signal has been experiencing problems since last Friday night due to a Verizon outage near our transmitter facility. To make matters worse, our backup audio circuit has also been going in and out, resulting in silence, skipping and instrumental surf music. Egad. We are making offerings to the technology gods and hope to be back to normal soon! In the meantime, our streams, 90.1 FM, and 91.9 FM are all a-ok."
  7:45pm
Listener Robert:

So as to the tech problem, it's with a D/A converter?
Avatar 7:45pm
listener mark:

Hello "Hello Childrin" Signal is loud and clear in the Hudson Valley 90.1 FM
  7:46pm
Listener Robert:

So the primary cx is digital via Verizon, which is out, and the backup to that is a satellite downlink that rarely gets used, so you don't find out about problems with it until it's "tested", like now, huh?
  7:47pm
Will:

Hi Jason, Glad to find your show here again, wasn't it my Thursday mornings that you ruled for quite a time, in the late I-don't-even-know-what-decade?

JakeGould:

*gasp* Th’ Faith Healers!
  7:48pm
JakeGould:

Based on the 91.1FM problems, the year 5776 is shaping up to be a tad crappy. Maybe some Verizon circuit had a “Y2K” moment transitioning from 5775 to 5776?
  7:49pm
Listener Robert:

Would that be in Hebrew or hexadecimal?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm
efd:

Listener Robert, I'm not sure if there's anyone here who can answer your question(s) in detail. You're probably best off emailing Ken to get more info.

  7:51pm
Listener Robert:

I know they used letters like the Greeks, so if they had computers, maybe there would be a "rollover" problem this year.
  7:53pm
JakeGould:

This is the problem: Verizon sucks.

Avatar 7:55pm

How old is the equipment? Before or after the year 2000?
  7:56pm
Listener Robert:

I moved into this shadow-zone (from WFMU & much else) apt. in 1986, and until a year ago, every time the wires got wet somewhere nearby, my phone service was crappy (hum, crackle) or spotty (i.e. no cx at all at times). Finally a year ago Verizon broke down & installed a fiber optic line & converter. They try to withhold that unless you buy more services, but they finally relented w me.

Nate K:

Sounding great, Jason.
  7:59pm
JakeGould:

@ListenerRobert: I had all of my service go out with Verizon in my old place which was in a “better” neighborhood. My landline and DSL were out. In the past this was a linesman’s error that a simple call would get fixed in 24 hours or less. But this time—like in 2012—Verizon said I had to wait 1 week for an appointment. Cancelled my service, got a 4G/3G Mi-Fi and everything worked great. Miss the landline though.

@ Wei: Sorry, "Trainspotting" flashback. DJ Faye is sleeping.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm
-Ken:

Robert et al: Our T1 circuit is out due to a widespread Verizon outage (a broken DS3 circuit) and our backup MP3 stream broadcast keeps crapping out and looping because of a broken Comcast cable modem, which will be replaced tomorrow.
  8:09pm
JakeGould:

@-Ken: Thanks for the update! Hoping for best tech resolutions in the coming 5776!
