Re: no new rock in NYC -- well, radio geeks have hashed over that topic endlessly on various silly local radio message boards. Supposedly NYC is "not a rock town" anymore, and this & that about the demos, e.g. local Latinos aren't Mexican enough (many Mexicans like rock, while Caribbean Latinos supposedly do not). Yeah right, whatever. Moot point now anyway, since commercial radio is so appalling -- finally get a new rock station, it'd be repetitive as hell.

Totally true. I have contributed to those message boards & discussions myself. I agree, it would be repetitive and crappy- but its the principle of the thing I guess...

The weirdest part of NYC not having a real rock station is that White Plains does. (107.1 The Peak) The coolest rock station in the area that is locally owned and pays it's DJ's should be in the city, not Westchester.

You can get them in The Bronx and some parts of Queens and they play every thing from Chuck Berry to right now with DJ's that know their stuff.

You can pick up a rock station from NJ, 105.5, in some parts of NYC as well (at least when Flatbush or maybe Bronx pirates aren't drowning it out) but that's a crappy boring station IMHO.

...okay: I'm always going on about how when Rock Radio existed
- before everything (not just Music - but Music & Rock can be the canary in the coalmine if it matters to you & you notice) was a company owned by a larger company by a larger one
- & thus controlled exclusively by lawyers & beancounters
...Rawk Radio stations would do exactly that b k
- they would play not just the latest charting blah blah, or three highest charting songs by 20 acts like
Classic Rawk format does
...& thus there was Continuity in Rawk Culture &History - it was still a living & ongoing thing that had a Past connected to the Present, & had some deep-cut Depth...Rock Radio...it was a different world...

It is kind of funny that NYC is a musical tastemaker but cant sustain a rock station in the city. Bands flock to NYC (or are born here) but there is no real outlet for them other than club shows/WFMU/WSOU (kind of). It is a sign of the times. Se la vie.

What about decent rock clubs within Manhattan or even in non-deep parts of Brooklyn. I mean at some point people are going to question why they are coming to NYC to “make it” when they can just create buzz elsewhere.

The biggest problem w/NYC radio is that its major commercial stations are all gigantic and thus highly leveraged, i.e. tethered to lots of debt, so the owners all aim right at #1 to pay it all off ASAP, instead of aiming for a healthy, sustainable #11 or #14. 107.1 FM is in a much smaller market so it's probably not worth so much that its owners get tied down.

@Ike: I think what you are describing is not just a phenomenon in the world of radio but the general, “Be on top or be a loser!” mentality we live in. Especially in NYC and maybe the rest of the US nowadays. Everything is an investment everywhere. The idea of owning—for example—a small modest business where you make enough to just exist is harder and harder to do nowadays.
