  9:32am Listener Robert:

I'm now on the drug Eliquis, to prevent possible thromboembolic disease from the paroxysms I've had lately of atrial fibrillation. But whenever I try to remember the name Eliquis, instead I think Esquivel. Got any Esquivel?
  9:33am doca:

@Alex: it also reminds me of Chico Science, but it also represents some trends on Brazilian rap nowadays, of mixing Brazilian music with rapping

BTW, @Doug, this song is about people being nosey about the singer's life and asking how he manages to do his things and whether he was not supposed to be doing something else. Then it urges people to stick with what's proper to them

uncle michael, seems to me so many NGOs are problematic these days, just channelling taxpayer money to private companies, it's pretty difficult. i still tend to think MSF are about as good as it gets, and they're frenetic in refugee camps in various locations right now, doing great work...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Doug Schulkind:

@hyde
I doubt it. Just some studio hire I'd bet.

Doug, I believe you wanted to be notified of typos--Armtstrong is a typo.

@Webhamster Henry: If you do, please share it with the rest of us!

Tell me this record (Louis Armstrong singing Pharaoh Sanders) actually exists, and I'm not just hallucinating again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Doug Schulkind:

@Gaylord
I was pleased to make that connection a few years back!

@bobdc
THANK you!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:47am Brian in UK:

Thanks Doug.

This is insane. I second Gregory's need for assurance
Avatar 11:48am ndbob:

Avatar 11:49am hyde:

@Doug yeah, i imagine you're right. this Armstrong is amazing too, though. (this Pharaoh Sanders tune was a high school fave). Thanks for the show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Gaylord Fields:

My stars, this is perfect! I thought I knew about this song's existence, but this is a revelation!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Doug Schulkind:

@ndbob
His last-ever recording session in May 1970.
Avatar 11:50am Flash Strap:

Wow, wow, wow. I can't believe I never knew any of this
Avatar 11:51am Flash Strap:

I'm weepin' at the beauty of it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Doug Schulkind:

I heard this song on the radio maybe 35 years ago. It was on Washington's then-great WPFW. I nearly drove off the road. I missed the DJ back announcing it, so I wasn't 100% sure I heard what I thought I heard: Louis Armstrong singing with Leon Thomas. I spent years getting "you are a fool" looks from clerks in record store jazz departments when I asked about it. When I finally found it, it exceeded the engorged expectations I had for it. Amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am coelacanth:

oh my that Louis Armstrong track was EXTRAORDINARY!!
  11:53am Mr C:

Billy Stewart was a complete original..Chess band/arrangers were perfect complements...I saw him performm in Phila shortly before his horrible accident in NC.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am coelacanth:

(okay- everyone's said that already.)
Avatar 11:54am Flash Strap:

Thanks for playing that Doug
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Doug Schulkind:

On this same Louis Armstrong recording, he covers "Everybody's Talkin'," "We Shall Overcome," "His Father Wore Long Hair," "This Black Cat Has 9 Lives," "Give Peace a Chance."

And speaking of weeping, get out your hankies for our next and final selection...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Doug Schulkind:

Oh wow, Mr C. I simply adore Mr. Stewart.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Alex In Illinois:

There is a recording that is allegedly of Louis Armstrong setting a tempo by saying: "Not too slow, not too fast, just kind of half-assed". It is on an old Kermit Schaefer Bloopers record. Apparently, that actually did NOT happen, but was actually a hoax with someone imitating Louis Armstrong.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am Gaylord Fields:

When I tune in to shows like Doug's, I listen intently, take note of things — and brazenly steal!

  11:59am Dean:

I *so* want to dislike Sondheim, but no matter how hard I try... He learned well at the feet of Bernstein.
Avatar 11:59am Jeff:

Goodbye, Dean Jones. You weren't just that Disney guy.
Avatar 12:00pm Flash Strap:

What a doozy of a finale
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm Doug Schulkind:

I am a card-carrying lover of Sondheim. A whole deck of cards.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm Gaylord Fields:

Sondheim changed Broadway for the better. He's a goddamn hero.

And hearing Elaine Stritch in the scrum . . . well . . .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm Uncle Michael:

Great close, Doug...thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm Webhamster Henry:

Nina Simone should have covered this .. but she did do: www.youtube.com...
Avatar 12:02pm Jeff:

(And let's raise another glass to Elaine Stritch! Even though she was off the sauce in her later years, and needed to be.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm Doug Schulkind:

And he always hated this song. Thought it took the easy way out, ending Company on a too-positive note.

@Jessie
Yes!
  12:02pm Listener Gregory:

Hard to believe this guy (Jones) starred in the Disney movies I saw in childhood, like That Darn Cat!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm Alex In Illinois:

Anyone else listening on headphones? The use of stereo to give the illusion of location is very well done. Great recording engineer.

Nothing wrong with learning from Bernstein.

I thought that was Stritch, and in confirming it I learned Anthony Perkins started rehearsing for the Jones lead but left to direct something.
