there are so many of the Ornette records that I love, but I think Body Meta is the one that means the most to me. I bought that LP about when it came out at Strawberries when I was 15 or 16, and that thing just blew me away. I can hear Voice Poetry in my head right now just thinking about it

good morning all and thanks for the tribute. My good friend had this encounter with Ornette: The first time I met him was in San Francisco in the 60s. I'd been hearing his trio with David Izenon and Charles Moffat at the Jazz Workshop every night. I went up to an ice cream shop at Columbus and Broadway and he was there, dressed in a suit of blue pajama material. I'd eaten some peyote so I was seeing red, yellow and green rainbows coming out of his hair. We talked and finally I apologized and said "I ate some peyote Ornette, so I cant understand what we're talking about" He smiled and laughed and said "You don't always need to understand what you're talking about or what music is coming out of your horn . It's often better when you don't...it gets the mind out of the way "

@Cecile I've always felt that Ornette's music was a lot like Godard's Breathless in this way. At the time it came out what was happening was really shocking and radical, but over the years a lot of the techniques and feel got assimilated into more mainstream work, and so now it all seems a lot more tame.

I feel that way about John Coltrane's Live in Seattle recordings. It all sounded like unmitigated wailing in first and tenth listens. Now it just sounds beautiful. (OK, it is still unmitigated wailing, but beautiful wailing.)

I have been listening to this show the whole time but been just to busy post anything. I remember buying an Ornette Coleman 2 record set back in 1987. One record was with an ensemble having 2 drummers and 2 basses, and recorded in some dome in Atlanta's Peachtree Plaza. The other was of a smaller ensemble. I know Don Cherry was on at least one of them. I still have it in my vinyl stash in the garage, but I don't have a working phonograph.

heh, I had forgotten about the blindfold test. It does look like Downbeat still publishes, which is amazing. That rag was really useful to me in the late 70's-early 80's when I didn't know anything. Pointed me to a lot of good stuff.

Listening to the compilation of Ornette's Atlantic recordings last night. One incredible thing is that there were cuts that were not released on the initial albums and that didn't come out for a decade THAT ARE JUST AS GOOD AS THE RELEASED TRACKS (e.g., "Just For You"). The album The Art of the Improvisers is made up of such rejected cuts, and it is one of my favorite albums. That says something.
