No YOU'RE chair-dancing to Calexico's "Alone Again Or" cover on the stream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33am Doug Schulkind:

I would someday like to listen to Calexico in Calexico. That would be something.

I saw Ornette in Phila. right after Empty Foxhole. He played violin and trumpet. Not my favorite.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48am Doug Schulkind:

Good morning, Reverend Dr. MrC! Trumpet and violin shall be served in today's banquet. It will be delicious.

Doug, I feel like Calexico and The Lost Patrol on the same bill would be glorious.
Still shaking my head over folks in my circle of friends who said they had no idea who Ornette Coleman was when I mentioned his passing in an email. Everyone is new to someone, and nobody's into everything, but still.

Morning Doug. Looking forward to the show and some of your thoughts as well. My first Ornette album was "Skies of America".
  9:14am MrC:

I bought Free Jazz my senior year in high school. It was a ferocious mountain that overwhelmed me. I don't think I've ever listened all the way through. But it does feature one of my favorite album jackets. Change of the century indeed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Doug Schulkind:

Wow, Michael, what a gorgeous introduction to Ornette. We shall hear something from Skies today. Wish I could just play the entire thing.

@MrC
I will be airing the entire Free Jazz on today's show. There was simply no way I couldn't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Doug Schulkind:

Charlie and Ornette, reunited, and it feels so...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:23am doctorjazz:

Good morning...love the gif. So sad to hear of his passing. Free Jazz (the album) is one of the funkiest early "out" records released...at least, until Dancing in your Head. Great to hear all this incredible/influential music. (I guess the answer to what Trane thought of OC was the track his music took later in his career).
Avatar 9:23am d¢ pät:

Hello. Andy of the Ex posted a nice little piece on FB this morning about how Ornette Coleman's Science Fiction changed his life. He never says anything in his posts but felt moved to actually write a paragraph about the man that made him abandon his "indie" records.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Jeff Golick:

Re being intro'd to Ornette's music, I remember thinking that, for a reviled revolutionary, his stuff is SO BEAUTIFUL! (Might be a case of the more one knows about [how to play] music, the more one is put off by OC's approach [see: Jimmy Garrison], but I know next-to-nothing, fortunately.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Doug Schulkind:

Thanks, doctorjazz. Wanna read that, d¢ pät. Hugs and kisses, holland oats. Speak truth to power, Jeff Golick.

there are so many of the Ornette records that I love, but I think Body Meta is the one that means the most to me. I bought that LP about when it came out at Strawberries when I was 15 or 16, and that thing just blew me away. I can hear Voice Poetry in my head right now just thinking about it

From an Ethan Iverson post re Ornette, after sitting with him for an afternoon: "I asked Ornette about Haden, and he said that Charlie had the biggest ears. When we talked about Don Cherry, Ornette began nearly weeping, saying that Don understood him better than anybody, and how much he missed him."

Avatar 9:35am jill:

good morning all and thanks for the tribute. My good friend had this encounter with Ornette: The first time I met him was in San Francisco in the 60s. I'd been hearing his trio with David Izenon and Charles Moffat at the Jazz Workshop every night. I went up to an ice cream shop at Columbus and Broadway and he was there, dressed in a suit of blue pajama material. I'd eaten some peyote so I was seeing red, yellow and green rainbows coming out of his hair. We talked and finally I apologized and said "I ate some peyote Ornette, so I cant understand what we're talking about" He smiled and laughed and said "You don't always need to understand what you're talking about or what music is coming out of your horn . It's often better when you don't...it gets the mind out of the way "
Avatar 9:38am Cecile:

And warmest hellos to you, Jill, and to your young Ornette accompanist. (Feel free to share the link to the video, if you like.)

  9:50am Maricôt:

Gorgeous song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Uncle Michael:

I heard familiar melodic themes in it.
Avatar 9:51am Cecile:

I never understood why Ornette's stuff was considered so out there. But then again I came over from punk and funk. I always felt it was warm and accessible.
  9:52am Listener Gregory:

Beauty is a rare thing.
Avatar 9:52am bgporter:

I've been happy the last few days to remember that the first 'real' concert I ever took my son to was Ornette when he was touring with the Sound Grammar band. Maybe not fair to do to a 9 year old on a school night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Jeff Golick:

And from a purely selfish, prideful Tribe POV (a la Sandy Koufax), I'll add that Izenon is surely in the Jewish Jazz HOF.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Doug Schulkind:

I have a theory, Cecile. Not why it was so out there, but why it was spoken of as so "out there." Will try to articulate it in my next mic break.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Jeff Golick:

(It's a small HOF.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Doug Schulkind:

You're a good daddy, bgporter.

@Jeff Golick
Surely, Ornette is an honorary member?!
Avatar 9:54am bgporter:

Same thing w Dolphy's Out to Lunch. Sounds like a nice mainstream 60's record to me (easy to say with ears planted in 2015)
Avatar 9:55am Cecile:

yes, I'd like to hear your theory. I have some friends I like and respect, and who have broad tastes still say things like "he just plays noise".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Jeff Golick:

Ornette is on the board, Doug.
Avatar 9:56am Cecile:

what's interesting to me, bgp, is how angular it is for a bop record. Very pointy
Avatar 9:57am Van in DC:

Hi Doug, thought there might be some Ornette Coleman today, wanted to be sure to stop in
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Doug Schulkind:

So glad you did, Van in DC! There's always a comfy cushion here for you to perch upon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Doug Schulkind:

Ornette playing a shennai here is a nice forshadowing of his playing with the Master Musicians of Joujouka give years later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Jeff Golick:

Is this Dewey on shenai? --- uh, cancel that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am Doug Schulkind:

Ornette Coleman (shanai) Charlie Haden, David Izenzon (bass) Ed Blackwell (drums)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Doug Schulkind:

Dewey Redman will make an appearance on our next selection, Jeff Golick!
Avatar 10:06am hyde:

@Cecile I've always felt that Ornette's music was a lot like Godard's Breathless in this way. At the time it came out what was happening was really shocking and radical, but over the years a lot of the techniques and feel got assimilated into more mainstream work, and so now it all seems a lot more tame.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Doug Schulkind:

@hyde @cecile
I feel that way about John Coltrane's Live in Seattle recordings. It all sounded like unmitigated wailing in first and tenth listens. Now it just sounds beautiful. (OK, it is still unmitigated wailing, but beautiful wailing.)
Avatar 10:09am Cecile:

I don't think it's all that tame, it's just like it was billed like it was a lot more scary than it was.
Avatar 10:11am hyde:

@Doug. I'm certainly all for unmitigated wailing. Save the wails.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Andrew Waterloo:

Kinda like how Trout Mask Replica slowly dissolves from WTF into groovy as hell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Doug Schulkind:

In the next "set," I am going to play the entire 37-minute recording of Free Jazz. I have virtual pink carnations for the boutonnieres of all who stick with it.

Avatar 10:13am George from Bristol UK:

George from Bristol UK is now back from his 3 week trip to 1) Brooklyn (and the Dream House) and 2) North West Iceland. 1) 24 hour city. 2) 24 hours of daylight. A brilliant vacation combination ! I will be listening to my old LP copy of Dancing in Your Head after the show (unless you play it all). Listening to the drummer and overdubbed percussionists (inc. Ornette), I always think of Beast from Sesame Street. Don't forget the two guitarists; wow.

Yoohoo, Andrew Waterloo!

WTF > Groovy as hell

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Doug Schulkind:

Welcome home, George from Bristol UK! Sadly and shockingly, I won't be playing anything from Dancing in Your Head on today's show. It is my biggest regret (so far) about the choices I've made. So hard to slim it down to three hours.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Alex In Illinois:

I have been listening to this show the whole time but been just to busy post anything. I remember buying an Ornette Coleman 2 record set back in 1987. One record was with an ensemble having 2 drummers and 2 basses, and recorded in some dome in Atlanta's Peachtree Plaza. The other was of a smaller ensemble. I know Don Cherry was on at least one of them. I still have it in my vinyl stash in the garage, but I don't have a working phonograph.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Andrew Waterloo:

My first Ornette and one of my first jazz albums was the first disk of Live in Stockholm.

Listening to the compilation of Ornette's Atlantic recordings last night. One incredible thing is that there were cuts that were not released on the initial albums and that didn't come out for a decade THAT ARE JUST AS GOOD AS THE RELEASED TRACKS (e.g., "Just For You"). The album The Art of the Improvisers is made up of such rejected cuts, and it is one of my favorite albums. That says something.

btw, Chappaqua Suite as bed music for the day was a right solid choice

Sound Grammar isn't on that jazzdisco discography, either.

On a tangent, I recently picked up Cooper-Moore's Triptych Myth on AUM Fidelity. Wow.

I saw the Borofsky at the Temporary Contemporary in Los Angeles. The six-foot tall exhibition poster is in my studio, framed. After being reduced to insignificance by the magnitude of his commitment to his art, I wandered over to the Grooms show, which on that day just seemed silly. I wasn't in the mood for lightheartedness at that moment. I did a U-turn and left the museum.

Oops, missed your original query above, George in Bristol, UK!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:02pm Brian in UK:

George are you still in NY?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:04pm Brian in UK:

Doug, the rain dance worked over here. Heavens tears.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm Jeff Golick:

If tomorrow is the question, then this was the answer, Doug. Thanks so much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm Doug Schulkind:

I am still completely stunned that I won't be playing Lonely Woman on today's show. It is, for me, without question, the pinnacle of Ornette-ness. And also "Ramblin'." For those hoping to hear them, I apologize (and I apologize to myself).

There will be more Ornette love on the Drummer Stream. D:O Radio will be spinning Ornette Coleman records this coming Wednesday, June 17, 9-noon. And Kurt Gottschalk will be playing even more the following Wednesday as he fills in for D:O Radio.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:05pm listener james from westwood:

Can't even fathom the winnowing process that you used to pick these 3-ish glowing hours of Coleman. Thanks most kindly.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:06pm Brian in UK:

Steinski?
Avatar 12:06pm George from Bristol UK:

Brian in UK. I live in Bristol UK. I visit Brooklyn a couple of times a year to buy records (Downtown Music Gallery, Chinatown, Manhattan).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Doug Schulkind:

"Now" was the question on the midterm, Jeff Golick.

@Brian in UK
There will be a new Steinski mix on the Drummer Stream. But the date has to change. Will probably be July 14 at 3pm (ET).
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Brian in UK:

George were you over for a LaMonte Young show or am I getting confused?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Artie Haywire:

Joined late (stupid work) but loving the music and fellowship around Ornette's passing. Will circle back on the archive to catch it all.
@Doug: If you're near Raleigh, do give us a shout. Food and drinks shall be your reward.
