So I went to Amazon to look at the Robert Ottaviano music available (these shows do that to me), most of his music must be out of print, at least in the US, just about everything is $35-50 a cd. Sad...
John Zorn has listed Mauricio Kagel as among his biggest and most important early influences, particularly his run of DG albums from the 1970s, many of which remain stubbornly OOP.
I go both ways on streaming...I use TIDAL to listen to new stuff or playlists, which I'll then use to explore and buy music I might have not heard otherwise. I can see at home, though, my wife and daughters, feel like there is no reason in the world anyone would want to actually buy a cd/lp/download now that it can be streamed. With the pay mechanisms currently in place for paying the artists, it must be really hard on most. Ribot is great, should be able to get his music out...
I think Albini was talking about the inevitability of streaming -- we're not going to put the genie back in the bottle. I'd be interested to hear what he thinks of the way artists are compensated for their work on streaming services...
I'm guessing Albini and Ribot are closer than their two pieces would indicate. As a fan, I'd certainly prefer to see both of these people on the same side of the barricade.
...still listening...today's the day FMU takes its' monthly shekel from my account...just pointing that out...Yeah - interesting: wasn't that Albini I saw in the 'Copyright Criminals' doc? He was calling b.s. on sampling in that - but @ the end said there's too many lawyers in everything as it is (paraphrasing)...
@doctorjazz - I think most people use streaming services the way your wife and daughters do. Almost everyone I know who's a music fan has stopped buying anything and just streams it. And if it's not on streaming, it's like it doesn't exist. Albini makes most of his money from production work so I'm betting he has less skin in the game than Ribot (and most working musicians).
That's a point! As for streaming - my ISP (the hated ComCast) gets my pints of blood every month - & I frankly ain't got a lot for anybody else after that - so that's who gets (all of) that money...
- largely true AndrewC! Many podcasts I love go ignored. I think of Dylan stealing Guthrie records out of need, & George Harrison saying they couldn't get a cup of sugar much less a Rock record - & how my choices now are like a gushing firehose I can't control! Some backlash w/ 'artisanal' vinyl...
...methinks perhaps the larger issue of the great recession - & wealth inequality has people squabbling over crumbs? Fewer own more, in all areas of society ; labels, radio stations owned by faceless beancounters who neither know nor care about arts, artists, audience or the tech used for it...It's out of synch.

Catching up on the playlist and the comments, I'd say Ribot gets the better of the argument, but neither really captures the nuances of IP or copyright. For example, both should know that "ideas" are not at all subject to copyright. It's the "once expressed" (in a tangible medium) part that federal law governs. It's cute that Albini thinks he's not part of "the music industry" because that's how he "feels." I wonder how he "feels" about capitalism.

Meanwhile, I feel like I'm enjoying this new Steve Coleman.
The cover on that Kagel DG release is a sight to behold: http://www.deutschegrammophon.com/imgs/s200x200/4777095.jpg

Also, it's curious that DG lists Kagel among the "Artists," but not the "Composers." A keyword search for "kagel" generates two additional hits in the catalog.
That is odd, Dean. He was known as someone who used theatrical conventions in his pieces and thought about performance quite a bit. But he was very much a composer. And yes, many of Kagel's DG covers are wonderful.

Ah, a different recording. I was struck by the fact of Portal's and Globokar's participation on "Exotica."
D'Angelo internalized quite a bit for his new record - Al Green, Prince, Funkadelic, Fishbone, Eno/Byrne, PE, Sly Stone, etc etc. Really impressive work and there's apparently 30-40 more cuts that are almost finished.

- & yes - if Albini's point was we won't put the genie back in the bottle - that's maybe 1/2 of what he said...

D'Angelo has certainly internalized Eno/Byrne's "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts."
