the Canterbury wood-elf:

I'm pretty sure the famous stupa Chick referred to in the Kathmandu valley was destroyed in the recent Nepal earthquake.

It was 260,000 times weaker, so almost not worthy of mention considering the devastation in Nepal, but Canterbury was hit by a 4.3 'quake last night, very uncommon around these parts (it woke me up).
Avatar 12:00pm
Cecile:

Elf, I remember there being a 5.1 earthquake in Illinois, and us feeling it in Lower Michigan. Felt like a freight train going by - but there were no tracks nearby!

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Richter Scale is measured Force against Distance (x-y) - so just one number higher is a lot stronger...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

(I read 'Assembling California' - good book.)
- Thx TS !

the Canterbury wood-elf:

@Cecile Exactly, it was like a heavy truck going past, except I live in the middle of the woods. A friend closer to the epicentre in Sandwich described it as "Mental. Like an elephant falling down the chimney."

@RRN63 Ah, I always thought it was a logarithmic scale (like dBs)
