@Gary: Do you know when rock bands began to sing in "Chinese"? I was impressed watching Don't Think I've Forgotten on how the bands started singing early in Cambodian(?). I was thinking of Japan, of which I've always seen that it was only with Happy End that they started singing in Japanese.

Rock bands started singing in Chinese as early as rock music, essentially, although not on the mainland .... but certainly in Taiwan and Hong Kong and countries with lots of Chinese speakers ....
