C'mon Bobby.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm Stevel:

"I wonder..." is such a great song. Doesn't seem like I can hear it too much.
Avatar 12:38pm CDToaster:

Hi Joe, I've noticed this is (at least) the second week in a row you spoke about Vin Scelsa regarding his amazing dj-ability so I'm wondering if there's some reason why you keep mentioning Vin (my all-time hero who started fmu back in '67 and initiated the term, "free form radio" as well as the "...but I degress..." phrase? I listen to your show often but never heard you mention Vin as much as you have recently. So tell me, Joe, is there a particular reason for this? I am (mta) Tony, fmu's longest listener.
Avatar 12:40pm Joe B:

he is the king of segues and set flow, a level i can never reach.
Avatar 12:40pm Joe B:

The only DJ to approach that level in my era has been Hova, as endorsed by Vin himself!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm Mike East:

what a great Ronettes track.
Avatar 12:44pm CDToaster:

Okay, glad to hear there hasn't been some "behind the scenes" happening I wasn't aware of regarding Vin. It's so nice just to hear his name mentioned. I love Vin and became an instant fan the first time I heard him on fmu during his first show when he played the entire Rotary Connection Lp when I was only 14. I've been listening to fmu ever since. Thanks for replying with only good news.
Avatar 12:46pm Joe B:

i guess i mention him a lot lately as with his retirement announcement been on my mind plus a few long discussions with other FMU DJs about him
Avatar 12:52pm CDToaster:

Ah, so I was correct, there WAS a reason you've been mentioning him; he announced his retirement! This I didn't know and is a big deal for me. Not to beat the subject down, but do you know whether or not he'll be doing a "last" show on fuv or have I already missed it? Man, if I missed it, I missed the one show I'd do anything to hear...
Avatar 12:53pm Joe B:

it might be this saturday
Avatar 12:56pm CDToaster:

Oh man, thanks Joe. I'm such a devout fmu listener, my radio dial's been stuck in the same position for decades. I've been afraid to turn it lest I break the connection. I'll break it this Saturday. Vin molded my life, a tradition carried on by subsequent fmu djs through the decades. Much appreciated, Joe.
Avatar 12:57pm Joe B:

i'm not positive it is this saturday but it is coming up
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm efd:

if I may belatedly add to the plugathon, related to a song in the opening set, this Wednesday night I'll have Chris O'Leary on my show to talk about his book REBEL REBEL, which analyzes every song David Bowie wrote (even if it wasn't recorded/released) from 1964 through the release of Station To Station.

I am pretty sure that I will be playing some David Bowie records during the show.
Avatar 1:03pm V Priceless:

@ efd - woo! Can't wait!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm Sem Chumbo:

Yo, Joe. Hiya, late to the Monte in person, but never in my heart. Hello, 3-chordites.

Avatar 1:08pm CDToaster:

Thanks Paula pc! You've saved my life. I'll be forever grateful and I really mean it. Seriously, just in time, thank you, thank you, thank you. I'm so grateful. I love Vin so much. I'll always remember this day and paula pc.
  1:10pm paula pc:

@CDToaster -- says am, but I think it's PM, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm coelacanth:

greetings Joe and All.
Joe i think you could've picked up 90.1 by bsp also.
Avatar 1:14pm Joe B:

yes, 90.1 by BSP but lose it after a while on thruway then later on briefly got 91.9 fm
Avatar 1:18pm CDToaster:

Paula pc, I'm not taking any chances. I'll be tuned-in all day long just to hear any hoopla that may be going on beforehand. Saturday's my day off from the MTA so I'll be free all day long to enjoy and reminisce. I listened to Vin's very first show on fmu in 1967 when I was 14 and listened to both him and fmu ever since. My life would be totally different if not for Vin and fmu. Much thanks and an eternity of gratfulness goes out to you paula pc, and of course to Joe for initiating my interest in why he's been mentioning his name recently. I'm glad I took my interest to the next level and asked Joe about it or else I'd never know this was happening. Then, I'd have to kill myself for missing it. So you really saved my life, paula pc and Joe Belock!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm coelacanth:

  1:27pm Hackensack Slim:

Saw Hasil a few times. Always great. Last time was with the Demolition Doll Rods opening up. Coincidentally enough. We miss you, Haz. See ya Saturday Joe.
Avatar 1:28pm CDToaster:

I've been off of work all week due to an on-the-job injury listening to fmu CONSTANTLY, non-stop, and this is the first time I'm hearing ANYTHING about Vin Scelsa's retirement and he BUILT fmu! He invented the term, "Free Form Radio," and HE was the one who began saying, "...but I degress..." before ANYONE ever did, now everyone says it. I think fmu should take a more active roll in promoting Vin's last show even if it is on a competitive station. This should be the consummate exception to the rule and for the first time in radio history a station airs what a different station is airing perhaps even simultaneously! I mean, this event is basically being ignored by fmu when it should be (somehow) part of the event. Anyone agree with me?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm coelacanth:

Adkins and Stollman would be in very different places right now,if such after-life places did exist.
  1:31pm SeanG:

HASIL!
  1:33pm Tim BK:

Hasil came to my house party after a show in Athens in the mid-80's. He played my crappy acoustic guitar and passed out in our bushes in the front yard. Don't know why he didn't choose the couch. But he was in touch with some deeper universal truths we aren't privy to.
Avatar 1:33pm d¢ pät:

OH come on! I go out for some vitamins and miss most of a Hasil set?? CARP!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm coelacanth:

this is the best version of this!
Avatar 1:35pm tonyb:

back in the early '90s
wfmu was just short of the goal
on the last night of the marathon

vin did an appeal on whatever
station he was on at the time(K-rock?)
to help us reach the goal
  1:36pm Sissophonic Cheryl:

Have been enjoying on my phone and earbuds while scanning! But back on computer now. Go go Joe!!! Everybody, make sure you go to Joe's screening of "Boyce and Hart: The Guys Who Wrote 'Em" 5/29!!! It's amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm coelacanth:

yes it was krock.
that was beautiful!
  1:36pm Bluesman:

Great Hasil tribute! "Yard Sale" got me a little teary-eyed.
  1:37pm SeanG:

Carl Perkins kickin ass!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm coelacanth:

i only knew this by the Robert Gordon/Link Wray revival record...which is a pretty rockin version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm efd:

thanks Joe!
  1:48pm SeanG:

Trashmen
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm Dominick:

Monotonix scared the dealers!
Avatar 1:50pm CDToaster:

@tonyb: Wow, what a great story; no, I never knew that happened since at that time I was living out of listener range (on the Virgin Island of St. Croix) long before internet listening days. Just like Vin to stick up for his Alma Mater. It would be totally cool and great if fmu somehow got involved with Vin's last show. Ken has an opportunity to made radio history again with another fantastic event. Thanks for that story, tonyb and coelacanth.
  1:50pm JakeGould:

You can also get off at Atlantic Avenue/Pacific Street (Barclay’s Center) and walk to Hoyt-Schermememerflugelhorn and catch the G there.
  1:50pm Sissophonic Cheryl:

First record fair 1993 Hoboken, I believe.
  1:50pm Sissophonic Cheryl:

Briiliant segue out of that set. Destination Greenpoint!
  1:53pm P-90:

"...I take the G and not the L" Haha! Murphy's Law: If FMU moves its Record Fair to Brooklyn near the L, the L will be out of service that weekend.
Avatar 1:55pm d¢ pät:

oh. So Miriam is the original Cramps drummer? She's got a good sound on that tune.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm coelacanth:

Yes,Vin should do one more show on fmu, after his "retirement". going out on the reprehensible sirius and fuv is unfitting for such a legend!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Hoboken Jack:

Late but here! (Man i hate doing work.)
  2:02pm frenchee:

jolly good show, Joe!
Avatar 2:03pm CDToaster:

Totally in agreement with coelacanth. A perfect solution! C'mon, Ken, get with it and make it happen!
Avatar 2:03pm d¢ pät:

wow, what is it about this Magic Numbers tune? Not really my cup of tea but sure sounds good right now..
Avatar 2:06pm uuee:

All right Joe,
Fruits de Mer! A shout out to Bill Sweeny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Who knows...Once Vin is free of other obligations. After decades of following him from station to station, we can only hope for an occasional to the only place he really belongs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm coelacanth:

yeah, just because he's retiring... well,to put it in the words of (the Great) John Lee Hooker, "it's in 'im,and it's got to come out!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm Frankipop:

going to 16th and Valencia...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm Frankipop:

hats off to Miriam for flyering up the Lower East Side old school style and breaking the law.
Avatar 2:27pm d¢ pät:

oh yeah, in DC if you put flyers up, the Man fines the club you're playing at.
Avatar 2:28pm CDToaster:

Can you imagine Vin Scelsa makes a surprise appearance at the fmu record fair and does a live broadcast from there. Wow, what a dream!
  2:28pm Sissophonic Cheryl:

See you and AP Mike Saturday!

Avatar 2:31pm V Priceless:

fun show, Joe - thanks! First beer's on me if I see you at the record fair!
  2:32pm xxx:

It was so DIY! And it was book related, not music
  2:32pm Figures of Light:

Fantastic show, Joe, as usual -- for once I get to listen in live rather than waiting for the recap. Hope all is well with you, and all best wishes, FOL

Avatar 2:37pm V Priceless:

@ efd: are The Brats reunited? I'm pretty sure they did a gig @ The Brighton Bar recently.
Avatar 2:37pm Cheri Pi:

JB you are King of the Yeye girlz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm efd:

@V Priceless I know they play out from time to time, not sure of the lineup/status though. I actually auditioned to play drums for them when they were getting back together around 2003 or so, but they decided to go with someone who could sing backing vocals.
Avatar 2:43pm Claw!:

This is a trip
Avatar 2:43pm Nanker de Tucson:

Another MY-T-FINE 3 Chord Monte program today! Thank you, JoeB!
Avatar 2:55pm V Priceless:

Interesting, efd - thanx for that! A buddy of mine played guitar with them for a while. Not sure where he fit in to their lineage, probably late 70's/80's? Fab player.
