Nick, it was fantastic. I loved the band then, forgot about them, and love them again now. Mary Monday was the opening act, IIRC. As for Kirk, I saw Cabaret Voltaire, too, in LA, w/ opening act Young Marble Giants. Thems was the days.

cory, I'm not an expert but I'm sure it will work. Does it have an adjustable counterbalance? You want to keep just enough weight on the needle to track the groove without putting too much wear on your LP's. Usually around a gram and half.

Also, I've found that sound quality can change dramatically with different cartridges (the part that holds the needle).

Congratulations! Have a good time with it!

V Priceless:

See above, C!
  1:08am

Oh, and depending on how anal you are you might want to invest in a nice LP cleaning brush and fluid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10am

greetings V P!

hey cory i've never had a crosley, but -what rw said + make sure the platter is perfectly level, before you set the anti-skate.
and CLEAN your records before EVERY time!
  1:10am

Trust me. Proper cleaning of LPs makes a huge difference in sound and performance of the cartridge and stylus.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11am

oh,yeah-what they said.

V Priceless:

I have it on excellent authority that wood glue works wonders on restoring old scratchy vinyl too, but you must allow it to sit for a day or so before peeling off
  1:15am
Dean:

But old scratchy vinyl doesn't require restoration! The age and scratchiness are part of the pleasure.
  1:15am
rw:

coelacanth, how does one set the anti-skate? I usually just turn the knob until my records stop skipping.

VP, I've been wanting to try that trick but I'm too scared (and busy).

Claw!:

FISH!
Where ya been all my life??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18am
coelacanth:

rw- their all different, but with no manual that's what i do now too!
"discwasher" was once excellent, but was bought out and i don't know now. a good fluid to use is distilled water with a drop or 2 of "photo-flow" per pint. (you can ask someone with a b/w darkroom for this. a tablespoonful should last you the rest of your life!)
  1:18am
Dean:

For those of you in the "Bay Area," don't miss an amazing turntable and LP store in San Jose, Analog Room. The guy who runs it, Brian, can't care less about promotion. There is no signage on the shop and the website has tanked. But wow if you like analog shit, it's the place to be: http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-analog-room-san-jose

  1:20am

V Priceless: it's my thing, but truly there are transcriptions of very old vocal recitals with little to no noise reduction that are far more enjoyable than stuff that's been "cleaned up."
  1:20am
V Priceless:

I dig vintage stereo gear! I swear by my old Dynaco speakers!
  1:20am
JakeGould:

@Ike: I have used 39DollarGlasses.com and they are decent. They have their own frames which are fairly generic. But they can also custom fit your prescription in frames you sell them which is what I do nowadays. They work fine for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21am

Also, anyone here know of a good source for simple speaker guts. Just the speakers themselves. I know I can order on eBay or from electronics sellers or even scope out thrift stores, but I want to get like 10 smallish 1" to 2" speakers to use in a project.
  1:24am
Claw!:

Meh. I could be less stressed, but Imma be ok. Thank goodness for Weird Al. He has been keeping me afloat throughout the tension. Just got tickets to see him live in June, and I can't wait! :-}

Carter/Bradford are over the top. That show from Catalina Bar & Grill on hatHut is divine.
  1:26am
V Priceless:

Yeah Dean. I'm leery of that 'cleaned up' stuff, in most cases. No signal processing or post-production in the world beats the honesty of a great microphone.

@JakeG: try Zalytron in Mineola, here on LI. Family-run, been in biz since forever. They may have what you need. Sorry I can't copy and paste from my dumb phone, but Google them. They're on Jericho Tpke. In Mineola, my old 'hood.
  1:36am
V Priceless:

@ Fish: they're old A25's, early 70's issue. My bro used to own a pair back in the day. I loved them so much I scored two pairs on ebay when I was building my system. Arguably one of the greatest 'bookshelf' speakers ever made. Rubber surrounds!
  1:39am
JakeGould:

Hey VPriceless, Zalytron looks good for real-world speakers, (www.zalytron.com) but what I am looking for is just cheap speakers like you’d find in something like a desktop “speaker” for an MP3 player. Or cheap computer speakers. But not the whole speaker, just the actual speaker electronics themselves. damn, this makes me wish Canal Street had electronic surplus places.
  1:39am

V those sound amazing! (no pun intended!)
...my dad has jbl cabinets from c.1960.(12"?,mid & tweet...) apparently in the 90s the company decided the foam they used around the speakers was of poor quality and recalled their speakers to be fitted with new foam. my father sent his in and they were of honor. those speakers are like new!

@VPriceless: Screw Radio Shack. Dealing with the staff is painful enough nowadays. Might go the online route anyway at this rate. Getting to the point that anyone who “makes” anything needs to go online to get stuff. Rubs me the wrong way, but hey… Such is the modern world.

  1:51am
rw:

Jake, Can you rip the speakers out of a radio from a thrift shop?
  1:52am
JakeGould:

@coelacanth: All the component places are basically just mail order from eBay out of some guy’s garage at this point. I wish I could just rummage through real boxes of items like the good old days of surplus.
  1:54am
JakeGould:

@rw: Yeah, I mentioned the possibility of ripping speakers out of old radios but even that is tenuous. Online might be the best practical bet at this time.

Jake, What's the project? Sounds interesting.
  1:57am
JakeGould:

@coelacanth: Yeah, NYC is like that as well. Oddly the only thing I have consistently seen electronics-wise this week? Old flat tube TV sets. Not flat screen, but specifically flat tube TVs. And LOTS of them all over. It’s like they all got tossed at the same moment?
  1:57am

Jake, So... fairly easy. I'm not really computer guy but it seems like a fun and potentially educational (and possibly frustrating) project to work on with my 13 yr. old son this summer.
  2:43am
rw:

Nick, The Cambodian night does seem like a fun evening. You're going, right? Unfortunately I'm on the other side of the country.
  2:45am
JakeGould:

@rw: “Easy” is a relative term. And I work in tech and generally the second someone asks “It’s easy…” or “How hard can that be?” They are really in over their heads before they even hit the ground. Do a Google search for “Raspberry Pi MP3 Streaming” and you can find this. I found this. www.codeproject.com... as well as this one: www.woutervanwijk.nl... 100% no experience with either project but if you want one, there you go.

Thank you Mr. Gould! That codeproject one looks fairly step-by-step. If you hear screams of frustration coming from the west this summer it's probably me!
