The original tenor saxist in the Blue Notes was Nikele Moyake. Suffering from extreme homesickness (and, unbeknownst to him, a brain tumor), he returned to South Africa not long after leaving. Fellow ex-pat South African Ronnie Beer is sitting in with the band in his stead on this recording.

REEL RECORDINGS

REMEMBER
Reel Recordings is a venture founded on the merits of excellence in musical history as presented within the dictates of our digital age. As adults we retain a collective memory for the analogue recording era from our experiences with vinyl records and magnetic tapes. Since its inception in the mid-twentieth century, professional and amateur recording captured, or constructed, musical performances on time continuous analogue electro-magnetic tape, often producing startlingly life-like playback. Consider the catalogue of John Coltrane, Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles or Can had their performances been sampled direct to 16 bit Digital Audio Tape ripe for computer processing. Case closed. We celebrate the now endangered species known as reel-to-reel tape by providing the consideration and respect it warrants.

RESPECT
As listeners, our compact disc libraries are peppered with re-releases, not to mention archival additions such as demo, alternate, and live recordings. Lamentably it is not uncommon that these inclusions offer little more reward than, ‘Interesting, if only...,’ response against higher artistic and audio standards. The initiatives of Reel Recordings are built on a foundation of respect for the integrity of recorded sound presenting a musical performance of integrity, and are developed in full cooperation with each artist. The foundation of this relationship is support and respect for their wishes toward the presentation of their recordings. Together we uniquely offer music that is both time-honoured and timeless.

REMASTER
The technical reasons behind the unique audio successes of analogue are vast and scientific, as are those for the successful characteristics of the digital medium, yet neither presents a sonic panacea. Sadly, radical and creative musical recordings, both past and present, are often processed with the standard studio equipment and aesthetic concessions designed for commercial pop and rock compact discs by engineers who have little to no experience with audiophile analogue sound playback. In brief, the elusive key to a successful transfer and remaster lies within the experience of discerning and remedying frequency imbalances, in tandem with a synergistic chain of tonally neutral Hi-End audiophile components. Our process incorporates tube amplification, acoustic accuracy, and eschews excessive computer processing. In opposition to the anonymity of conventional studio remastering techniques our approach lends a listening experience of natural authenticity and integrity.

REWARD
The releases of Reel Recordings exemplify an alternative vision for Compact Disc production. Digipak cases contain a replicate of the original source tape, full recording details, relevant photographs, artist notes, and a disc produced from a master that was burned direct in real time from a tube amplified analogue signal. Against current corporate and cultural conventions, no music cared for by us will be sonically compromised for downloadable computer files or MP3 purchase. The presentations will stand singularly, as Records In Opposition, for your personal audio playback system. Now available for discovery: an outstanding historical document of musical magnificence specially encoded within each Reel Recordings compact disc.

Mark, the label has been defunct for a few years now. It only pressed a thousand or so of every title, so finding used copies are the order of the day now.

The folks at New York's Downtown Music Gallery probably have copies of certain titles still kicking around. Bruce Gallanter there was also a friend of Mike King's. (I learned of Mike's death through the DMG newsletter.)
