Morning Jeff! It's been awhile…just pledged too. A bit late but hey...

Thanks so much, Adam.

Rough start this morning. Switching studios is still tricky for me

Morning DJ Jeff, coel, and everyone.
A most enjoyable show, right from the top.

Hey, P, thanks.

P-90 heyhey

i think i convinced 1 & maybe 2 people tonight to check out wfmu. the one dude was like "i think we can all agree that rock is dead, right?"
I was like, "NO!!!"
Avatar 3:57am
Jeff Conklin:

I usually say rock is dead, actually.
Avatar 4:06am
pierre:

Bonjour Jeff !
I didn't want to wake up and see 99%, I want to see the little blowing his horn !
Avatar 4:08am
Jeff Conklin:

you don't see 99, pierre, you see 95 :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15am
coelacanth:

it's not. it's just suspended in the mix. rock includes all "metal" & "punk"... "krautrock" & "alternative rock".
...one listen to Diane's kamakaze fun machine;Brian Turner's show; Martha's show or "infinite disortion" and it's obvious that rock is not dead.

yes,the grateful dead died several decades ago...(to some degree when Pigpen died- & certainly DONE after "Blues for Allah")- but "rock" is a broad term.

b k:

Such a great Dark Star.
Avatar 4:18am
Jeff Conklin:

There is plenty of rock music out there for sure. 99.9 percent of it is terrible and not worth my time. But that's just me ;)
Avatar 4:18am
Jeff Conklin:

One of my faves, BK
  4:18am
P-90:

Hey, it's Dark Star, usually won't hear that on FMU, in the daytime anyway.
Yeah, unfortunately Rock seems pretty dead these days. Whatever one thought of Rock in the eighties, it was certainly still "alive" then. Then it sort of faded away in the nineties. Whatever "Pop" is since then, it's not based on Rock. there may be some great revival at some point, but for now, Rock has sadly sorta run it's course.

nobody talk during this jam coming up
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21am
coelacanth:

...but this is mind music!
Avatar 4:23am
Jeff Conklin:

All I'm saying is don't send people here to prove rock isn't dead because it won't help yr argument!

Someone dump a put of coffee on Jeff…he's stuck in SPACE!

Excuse me, a "Pot" of coffee
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32am
coelacanth:

i'm not arguing. i know i'm right. anyone who thinks such things is not paying attention.
"rock" has never been the majority of music; and it still isn't. "doesn't mean it's dead.
Avatar 4:33am
Jeff Conklin:

chill, coel. nobody trying to change yr mind!
  4:35am
P-90:

wowee! That was good.

b k:

I once saw a list of the 100 best Dark Stars.I hope that one was on the list.(even the less great one's are worth hearing, I think)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37am
coelacanth:

someone at the bar tonight (the first time i've been out drinking in months) played "good lovin'" from the reissue of Bear's Choice....so this show is perfect right now.

...and to you as well,Jeff-my comrade...chill.
  4:39am
P-90:

@coel: not to be too contrary, but what you hear on Diane, Martha, etc., how much of the good stuff was done in the last 10-15 years? And of the stuff that is recent, how much of it is really fresh and not a rehash?
Avatar 4:42am
Jeff Conklin:

nobody into this Skousen jam??
  4:44am
P-90:

I would be curious to know if that was on the "100 Best" list. It was killer, that's how they sounded on a good night. At their best they could improvise an accelerando like that like no one else.
Avatar 4:45am
Jeff Conklin:

I think I've heard every publicly available Dark Star. That one is in my top 5.
  4:45am
P-90:

I give Skousen thumbs up, for whatever it's worth
  4:47am
b k:

These tracks are a perfect fit with that Dark Star.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47am
coelacanth:

this whole set has been sublime.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53am
coelacanth:

P-90 there's lots of good new music. the overwhelming majority would not be considered "rock"...and there's certainly nowhere near the amount of great "rock" music as during the renaissance (60s-70s)....but there's enough fresh sound qualifying to say "rock is not dead".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56am
coelacanth:

....what hasn't been rehashed? "heartbreak hotel" was a rehash. "louie louie" was a rehash.
Avatar 5:00am
Eiderdown:

I'm staying out of this one. But ya know, nothing dies…it just mutates in all sorts of wonderful ways...
Avatar 5:10am
Eiderdown:

Okay, it mutates in some pretty awful ways too but hopefully natural selection takes care of those freaks :)

Digging the Liliental to Toulouse segue!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15am
coelacanth:

Eiderdown, it does! the masses are weak and the corporations capitalise on that. the majority of music has always sucked and the ratio has gradually gotten worse.
the thing is - as long as there are people with the sensibilities for this program; and Bryce's show; and Stan's and Chris M.'s and Jesse J.'s (etc)..."rock" cannot die.
- because as people appreciate it music will be borne out of it.
-music made for the passion not for the money or fame.
i know people who make music for this reason.

DeadMan:

Rock is dead. Radio is dead. Baking is dead. Marriage is dead. Calligraphy is dead. Chamber music is dead. Classical music is dead. Segways have redefined the world of transportation. TV is dead. Movies are dead. The only true music comes from Japanese avant grade artists screaming into vintage microphones while a dog barks.
