Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from March 6, 2015 Favoriting

Uncle Michael's avatar View Uncle Michael's profile Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

A passel o' premonitions. Last night, for who knows what reason, a minute before I turned in I was thinking about some favorite Saturday Night Fever lines, from different moments of the same scene:

"We'd like a lemon with some tea now."

"Well, that's the way they took the poison in those days."

Crazy On You reminds me of hearing it on the radio as I moved custom vans indoors for the night at a car dealership.

SNF surprised me when I first saw it in the day, better than my expectation it being most low and awful. Some of it really is terrible, but I have a fondness for sections. Saw a documentary a few years ago with participants talking in most serious and subjective terms about the experience and project's impact.

3DN simply fell out of fashion. The Guess Who jumped the shark with the Road Food album.

It was really great, Mike...no matter what Ira Robbins finds to nit pick about the guest's point of view.

Gah! Of all things, my EYES take a beating going out from this unlit room & display screen into all that noon-lit white out there.

Dean, the simulation takes place in a flask that's stirred under hydrochloric acid & enzyme conditions, simulating the stomach, for an hour, then neutralized with baking soda w more enzymes & bile extract added for 4 more hrs. stirring, simulating intestine. The bile extract is like soap, so when the baking soda is added to the acid, it foams like crazy.

It's funny, when I came to GDTR/WFMU, I didn't know much about other DJs beds, set pieces, etc. I was kind of sad and delighted when became aware of Fabio's use of Mr. Giant Man...which I would totally play ...but won't.

As for other DJs' beds? I say play 'em. It's always fun to hear them sans back-announce. I've heard 2 this week (you and Charlie) and it makes for some brain-awakening cognitive dissonance. Anything to knock off the crust and remnants of old editing jobs stuck up in there!

Speaking of appropriation of arty bits, the guy I'm Webmaster for in our church just got a settlement offer of $89 & take-down from the stock cartoon he had me put on our front page a couple years ago. And he can't claim non-commercial use, because we link to another page where we sell literature. Heh...and if anybody searched that literature, they'd find a good deal of pirated artwork too, according to a mutual friend. I'm just following orders.

Robert:

My friend's use is strictly UNfair. He makes up standards to justify his ripping stuff off while considering his own creations proprietary. I proofread & copy edit his mss., and often find long plagiarized passages. Sometimes he violates copyrights with attribution (the easiest to detect), other times he plagiarizes in ways that may not be copyright-violating but are unethical, and sometimes he does both at once.

When he bought a computer game for us to play, I installed it on my computer for us to do so, but later, when he told me he was playing it solo on his computer, I deleted my copy. He made fun of how I respected their commercial rights. (I don't follow ALL the rights they claim on software, because they're ridiculous, but I try to go by 1 license = use on 1 computer at a time.)
  2:35pm
Dean:

@Robert, You correctly navigate the copyright/plagiarism strait. Some violation of copyright with attribution is fair use, some isn't. Some plagiarism violates copyright and some doesn't.

Robert, I found a goodly chunk of the Wikipedia entry for "2001: A Space Odyssey" in a book a publisher had sent me to edit, in thinly rewritten form, presumably after it had gone thru developmental editing, etc. I'd already been alerted to possible Wiki boosts after I Googled a fact in the MS and the Wiki snippet on the results page caught my eye (wouldn't use Wiki for fact-checking) and I noticed the text matched the book. Amazing what people will try to get away with.

Dean, I just note his rip-offs in passing. I don't police them. If he says put it in, I put it in. But putting up a cartoon that has an obvious ownership notice, not some hidden watermark, that's just dumb. Here 'tis until we take it down:
