My parents went to work from basically 9 to 5 and we were definitely poor, but not to the extent you see nowadays. There was some way out and some way to save. No need for credit. Now in the 2000s, what a mess. A different world.

No doubt some artists can still wing a work-a-day gig and such, but in the U.S. nowadays you’re juggling jobs to survive so much it seems like another planet.

My parents never had credit cards. Now who doesn't? And cheap credit gives you the illusion of cash flow, but better hourly wages ensure that. Not saying it's a calculated conspiracy, but I do believe the push towards credit culture is a key factor to this mess. And in NYC there is a sick side effect to this: Real estate in NYC nowadays is now more based on cash than credit.
