Avatar 9:42am annie:

my own personal mental slow-motion fireworks
Avatar 9:44am doca:

@Doug: It is part of those kind of challenges between singers/players. In Northeastern Brazil it is related to the tradition of the "repentistas", which is improvised and sung storytelling. In South Brazil (where I live) it is more related to the pajador (payador, in Spanish) thing. But both are duels around guitar playing. The "novelty" thing is not so much about being funny but around "dissing" the other guy. (The same kind of music exists in a lot of other places, of course).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Andrew Waterloo:

May as well pardon our English while we're at it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Jeff Golick:

The "dozens" aspect of that Brazilian thing came through pretty loud and clear.

The artists I am thinking of who perform this style are Geraldo Mousinho e Cachimbinho. Amazing stuff.
Avatar 9:50am doca:

@Doug: Yeah it is very traditional and folkloric in Brazil. Portuguese wikipedia says it comes from the Middle Ages. I wonder if it is still exits in Portugal.

Avatar 9:53am doca:

@Doug: Brazilian countryside keeps some interesting and very VERY old Portuguese traditions. One of them is the cavalhadas, which are representations of battles between Christians and Moors in the Middle Ages. I think "repente" comes from the same background.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am Doug Schulkind:

Jazz played a notable role in the Cold War. With emerging and liberated nations joining the world stage in the late '50s and '60s, the U.S. State Department sent out waves of happy black American musicians to sell the notion that the USA was full of racial harmony and brotherhood. For the musicians, it was a paying gig; for the U.S. it was rank propaganda.

There, I said it.

Molvær, yes. Seen him live several times. Before striking out on his own, he was a member of Masqualero, named after a Wayne Shorter tune. Info here:

This was more of a mainstream outfit, with two members from the old Garbarek quartet.

The break as far as Molvær is concerned, came with this one:

It marked a turn to electronica and special effects. He has worked quite a lot with Bill Laswell over the years.

The nomenclature is a no-win situation. My guess is that they originally went with "global warming" because it sounded more urgent than "climate change". ("What's the big deal? The climate is always changing.") Of course, calling it "global warming" opened the debate to the simpletons who figure "It's cold, so there's no global warming." Now, any attempt to change the focus to "climate change" invites the response, "Ah hah, so you admit that 'global warming' was wrong all the time", kind of the way saying "progressive" is a tacit admission that being "liberal" is bad.

Once I met Nino Scalia. I asked him for a breath mint. He said "Cert denied."

I think we should call "gravity" something else. It's too somber. How about "fallingdownness"?

Also, "Hurty 'Hatari!'" and "Dirty Atari."

Muchas gracias, Doug!

@Parq, that'd be more than Clarence Thomas has said on the bench since he took the seat.

Great title, btw.

Just catching up on the archive bits I missed due to dog walking. Agree on Tom B. On the last album the song 'Today is a Bright New Day' despite the title still had the line 'there is no one I can talk to when I have so much to tell'. I'm just a sucker for that kind of sentiment.
