A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

@Marcel, the Grand jury is different in that you can delay it or throw your number in with a big pool of people. Then you wait in this big room and listen as they call out names. If your name isn't called, you're excused and don't have to serve. But if it is, like mine was, you HAVE to serve - NO EXCUSES. So I rolled the dice and lost, but like I said my job paid me, so I didn't really lose. One of the people at the court said, "DONT gamble. We had a woman who was getting married on the same dates and had to reschedule her wedding." Ouch.

@Marcel - what part of Brooklyn do you live in? I used to live in Greenpoint, but moved a few years back. Barely recognize it now. Read an article this morning about Vice taking over Death by Audio and Glasslands and the animosity between parties. Funniest quote from the article:
During Death by Audio’s final night, on Nov. 22, patrons shredded copies of Vice magazine. A month later, as Glasslands arranged its last shows, people scrawled pointed bits of graffiti on walls there. One read “Vice dos and don’ts” — a reference to an enduring Vice magazine feature — followed by “#1 Don’t kill the culture that made you.”

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am
Marcel M:

@Jennique: I live in Bushwick and have for the past 5 or so years. Its undergoing a huge change but I still love it here (for now).

Ah yes... Death By Audio was my favorite place... Both to play and attend shows. I started going right around when it opened. It is very sad it closed. I wanted to go to the last night, but it was impossible to get in unless you were part of the crew there. I spoke with one of the guys who ran it who said Vice is fairly inconsequential in the whole affair. If they didn't buy it, someone else would have. There are plenty of reasons to hate VICE but the whole thing is a bit misguided. I understand the misguided frustration, but they will reopen somewhere else and life will go on! DBA was really sticking out like a sore thumb over there anyway. All the people running it had really positive attitudes about the whole thing. Also, VICE was one of THE FIRST to move to Williamsburg back in the day, so you could say they started the whole thing... kind of funny to look at it that way.

I should read this NYT article, its always funny to hear their perspective on "what the kids are up too."

I'm actually pretty fond of Jury Service: I throws you into contact with a more representative cross section of people than in your own self-selected life. The legal process is a kind of theater, and you get to see how different judges run their trials. I like how it can interrupt your life, like a bad storm, a war (that is, a declared, actual war, not just spying and bombing people), or death in the family.

You have to be adaptable!

If you get on Grand Jury, you also can see how Buy and Bust cases clog up the legal calendar, in case you needed another reason to shut down the War On Drugs.

When I lived in NYC, I was called up pretty regularly, I considered it my second career. Here's a little write up from 20 years ago: www.echonyc.com...

@Marcel - good point! It is a guilty pleasure of mine to read Vice Magazine. And you are right that someone else would have bought them out. You should read the article as someone from DBA was quoted about how it all went down. I went to Glasslands more than DBA and was saddened by the closing. I'm in Washington Heights now, but nostalgic for Greenpoint. Yet, like I said, it is hard to recognize.

Oh, Jury Service should certainly pay a living wage, comparable to military service; there are laws in place that compel employers not to fire you etc. It's harder if you are freelance, like I sometimes was, and the system itself is way underfunded, in case you haven't visited a shabby courtroom lately. Reforms have taken place, obviously more are needed.

@Jennique: Yes Greenpoint in particular, at least in terms of the changes I've seen, is a completely new neighborhood. I'll eventually leave Bushwick and move somewhere else. Its sad that the city changes, but I'm sick of listening to New Yorkers complain about how much this city sucks, when there are just so many amazing things still happening. I'm happy to be here at this moment in time and think the art/music scene is thriving wonderfully.

I just remember the really tacky commercials for that place, that it was a romantic getaway in the Poconos, with mirrored ceilings and such. A friend told mine that there was a saying, that if you broke a mirror in that room, you'd have seven years of bad sex!

Last night I went to a movie theatre to watch a documentary called Wrecking Crew about the musicians that did most of the actual music for the Beach Boys, Sonny & Cher, Simon & Garfunkel and all the west coasters. So fascinating.trailers.apple.com...

@Erella Green is still recording and playing out. He did a lot of shows here in the UK last year. Not too keen on his beard, mind.
